Does this advert sound right to you??
« on: November 20, 2014, 07:05:57 PM »
Hi all,

Still trying to buy an ST 1100 in France and this one has just been advertised.

http://www.leboncoin.fr/motos/733832782.htm?ca=4_s

The blurb says the timing belt was changed 25,000 k's back (roughly at 105,000kms) which I thought was about the recommended time but it also says it is a 1993 model with both ABS and TCS.  Is that possible?

Do those look like stainless steel mufflers to you?

All other things being equal, it is a good buy then at about $1,800 AUD.

Any thoughts??

Cheers,

The price is low by Oz standards, but it is an older bike even though it has average mileage. The exhausts look like stainless. Cant advise much on buying in Europe, maybe one of more local members can comment

Thanks Brock re the exhausts.  I wasn't sure if a 1993 model could even have both abs and TCS. Are you able to advise?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

R-178P Mulberry Pearl Red.......... That's the colour code for a 1993 European 1100AP which should be under seat if the colour is still original.

ABS/TCS is ok which would have been the second ABS model. The timing belt is usually checked for wear at 100,000 km and replacement no later than 150,000 km if there's any doubt play it safe and replace at 150,000.

The mirror housings and engine maintenance covers are not original, they should all be the same colour. The RH wing/crash bar is suspect and may have replaced; as the one from the picture is from a 1996 model. In itself not a problem but may be repaired accident damage.

The pipes.......aftermarket.......I prefer OEM as they look better.

It looks good to me, I would suggest that you just go and see it and chat to the owner (this will give you an idea of what he thinks of the bike and an indication of how he would have treated it)
Apart from that just take it for a ride and if you like it get it :grin

It's a very good looking bike.  Even the non-original coloured items match nicely.  The seat is after-market, and looks very comfortable. It looks like an after-market screen, but looks like it should be a good one.  I don't like the look of the "pea-shooter" exhausts- looks like something off an old Triumph.  New tyres is a plus.  The price is an absolute bargain by any standard.  As Shiney says- take it for a ride.  If everything seems right, then buy it.  There are very few bad STs around.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Thanks gents. Unfortunately I won't be in France until May so may have to rely on a mate to look it over. Apart from riding a Rocket III he knows his stuff.  Wish me luck.

Cheers

Cant see the ad but the areas to check are the swing arm and rear drive. The local forums always mention them with the salt on roads in winter
