A little while ago my bike was pushed over :cuss so I decided to get Crash Bars.
After looking at all the options I decided to go with the F6B/Goldwing Crash Bars, these bars have a bend and thanks to this the pillion footrests don’t need to be moved :thumbs
Anyway when looking around I found that Martin aka “red dirt cowboy” from ST-Owners.com sells a mounting/adapter kit to mount the F6B/Goldwing Crash Bars to the ST1300 :clap

Martin advised that the best place to get the crash bars to go with the mounting/adapter kit is from shops that do trike conversions on the F6B/Goldwings as the crash bars are removed and no longer required once the conversion is done.
Anyway Martin also had some Crash Bars for sale so I was able to buy them from him along with the kit :thumb
Well everything arrived a bit over a week later.

As you can see the mounting/adapter plate is unfinished and the crash bars are tarnished so first thing was to smooth out the rough parts on the plate and polish up everything :thumbsup

The next thing I did was have the crash bars powder coated black. (I reckon as they look better in black then chrome on the ST) 8)

Once this was all done it was finally time to install them on the bike by following the instructions provided with the kit.
I have added a scan of the instructions to this post but will run over the basics below :wink1
The Install
First mount the bars to the mounting/adapter plate using the nuts and bolts provided.

Once this is done remove the panniers then remove one frame bolt.
* Only remove one bolt at a time. If both bolts are removed at the same time it’ll be VERY hard to reinstall the bolts as the subframe may become misaligned with the frame.

Loosely attach the mounting/adapter plate with one of the supplied bolts.

Swing the plate around and remove the second bolt from the frame then swing the plate back and insert one of the supplied bolts to finish attaching the plate to the bike.

* The left side is very close to the pannier when installed and needs to be pulled forward when tightening the bolts to allow clearance for the pannier.
Job done :grin

I should add the total cost...
The Mounting/Adapter Kit & Crash Bars plus delivery came to $152.70 USD.
And the powder coating was $66 AUD (Custom Coating. 30 Leonard Crs, Brendale, QLD. Ph (07) 3205 2833)
(If you get the F6B bars they are already powder coated black so that can save some money ;-*)

I'm just wondering - does your pillion notice the loss of heel-room with the guards fitted ?

The wife said that when she has the foot peg under the center of her foot the bar just touches the back of her boot but that it isn't annoying or irritating at all :thumbsup
The only issue that she has is that she had to change the way she gets on the bike.
She now has to place her foot on the peg with her toes facing forward when getting on the bike as the bars stop her from spinning her foot as she swings her leg over.
But all in all she is happy with them :runyay

I just bought a set on Martins eBay site, should be here by the end of the month, then I will have them powder coated and fit them to STrangler. :thumbs

I like these a whole lot more than the MCL bars. There seems to be much more room for the Pillion's heels.
Depending on what may happen early next year, I might swap them over.

My crash bars are on there way. After emailing Martin I suggested he join OzSTOC. He seems like a nice chap.
Martin is trying to gauge whether to do another run of his adapter plates so if your considering to buy them, (he has 10 adapter sets left, and only 1 set of F6B black tip over bars left), can you post up here your interest so he can decide. He is sourcing more bars also, but they are getting harder to find even in the US. If he can see demand in Australia he will continue with them.. as demand in the US is slowing.
Biggles yours are on there way also. :grin
So post up your interest, :think1 these tip over bars can save you a lot of $$$ replacing/repairing panniers.
Martin has said we can contact him via his email scrptdr@aol.com with any questions/ enquiry.

Certainly a possibility. I'll have a think about it. I'll need to look closely to find an attachment point and of course they will have to be painted not chrome plated ;-*

My guards arrived yesterday.
They come with good instructions, one of which warns about the very tight fit of the left bar against the pannier.
I did as they suggested, and didn't like the fact that the pannier was actually firmly pressed against the bar. I found that carefully grinding a couple of locations removed that tension and let the pannier on and off normally.
The first one removed the metal that rubbed against the top hex bolt:

The second area was the original Goldwing brace at the rear of the bar:

As the instructions indicated, the was no interference on the RH side.
They add 1.6 kg to the bike's weight. Not ideal, but at least it's down reasonably low.

Bill I hadn't noticed the second point of contact on the pannier in your 2nd pic, hmmm I will check it out and grind it down also.. I had the same idea with the first pic though, :thumbsup

Bought the Bygdawg tip over bars. I prefer the rigidity of these over the gold wing with adapter plates thingy....

I haven’t tried it with the wifey yet, but I think they may get in the way... I’m looking for some type of drop down for the stock pegs but can’t find them anywhere..... if anyone knows of any, please speak up...

Yes, the peg lowering kits are for the rider's pegs, but an adaptation might be possible for the pillion. I know Mrs Biggles isn't enchanted by the loss of 20mm of her footpegs surrendered to the tipover bars.

Bought and sold so many things from OzSTOC members and others through the Forum, Gumtree, eBay and Facbook Market Place, don't remember now.
But my best recollection, I got 'em from an OzSTOC member who listed 'em on Gumtree, and I'm guessing he was in WA. Probably doesn't matter, they were a custom made job, CNC machined from a solid block of alloy, and whilst they are a very professional looking piece of gear, the holes and threads don't exactly line-up precisely and fitting needed a little bit of force.
When I give up the ST, I'll consider removing some of the extras, eg. Russell Day Long saddle, the Delkevic pipes and these footboards, and making them available to Forum members. Duncan has already put his hand up for the pipes, so he'll have the right of first refusal. Likewise for you (if you're interested) for the footboards, ie. if you don't give up the ST before me.

I have such vivid negative memories of barking my shins on pushbike pedals that were the same design concept, that I have a strong aversion to those! :eek
I know that type is common on off-road bikes, but ours are gentlemen's tourers. :thumb

I hear you.... difference being you needed to push on the peddles to move, now you just place your feet on them and twist at the wrist.... plus, by boots cover my shins
