The current heatwave sweeping the nation has claimed the life of a motorcyclist in the Outback, again highlighting the danger to riders of dehydration.

It's beggars belief that anyone would choose to go riding in the outback any time but late Autumn, Winter or early Spring. Like most of us, I ride in temps up to 35 or so, and know well just how dehydrating it is. I rode home from Tassie on Wednesday in temps ranging from 15 to 28 and thought I was keeping up the hydration. But I found myself drinking three times as much as usual on Thursday just catching up!

It's realy easy to not drink enough when riding in extreme heat, and I had a riding companion pass out from dehydration when we stopped to cross the Murray on a ferry on aparticularly hot ride. Despite our nagging insistance, he had been refusing to drink any water, and thought a couple of ice coffees would be OK. :fp

I know the top part of WA is usually fairly warm most of the time and 40C plus temps were quite normal when I was in Port Hedland for 18 months. I got used to it but even riding the 240km South to Karratha I'd have at least two drink stops each way. Seemed strange at first having June/July temps hotter than summer in Adelaide
Even now after having been back in SA for eight years we still take fluids with us on most trips

Nice 42c on way home from work today.... water before leaving, and again when I get home :-) at least it is dry heat where I am.

I remember going for ride to Port Macquarie with mates and my Daughter
It got up to 42° it was hot for me just imagine how hot it was for my Daughter on the back
Next day was much cooler riding home
