Title: 2020-11-07 They Keep On Coming
Post by: on November 08, 2020, 05:25:00 AM
Yesterday I set out for a wee ride to Yorkies Crossing.  Riding through Dublin in the dark I noticed the Dublin Roadhouse was no longer a BP and displaying the Mobil moniker.  I refuelled here in Snowtown which was also once a BP but now is displaying Shell colors.  I guess Perrys have discontinued their contract with BP as all their outlets on the day were either Mobil or Shell.

Next stop was at my 'usual' in Port Augusta before checking out the Australian Arid Lands botanic garden.  I snapped this bridge from the Matthew Flinders Red Cliff lookout and thought it might be the bridge I would be taking back.  It turns out it wasn't and is actually a railway bridge.

It also turns out that Yorkies Crossing isn't a locality like I thought it was and that it is a level crossing in Carriewerloo.

So as you can see the road is dirt.  In my experience there are three levels of dirt.

1. The corrugated stuff you ride a kilometre or two before deciding no and turning around (Cape Borda).

2. Well I got through, but will never come here again (Senior/Telopea Downs)

3. What the smeg, this is smoother than a lot of asphalt roads (much of Adelaide Plains)

Yorkies Crossing fits the middle category.  I got through, but it's very skaty and I shan't be going back in a hurry.

This causeway at Emeroo is probably as far at the Spencer Gulf extends when it is under water.

I didn't actually get off the bike at Wami Kata for this photo as the ground was soft as.

Riding through Davenport was frustrating as I couldn't see any street signs and it was after the third one I realised that the street names were posted on the kerbs instead.  By that time I had passed the one I wanted and knew I went too far when I arrived at the bridge in Port Augusta.  The old bridge is completely fenced off to the public now (at both ends).

Quorn has little wildlife statues at its cairns now.  They weren't here last time I rode through prior to rendezvousing with Stinky Pete on his last day of his lap of Oz last year.

I spotted an ST a few minutes later and had a yarn with the owner.

Yellow 1100 with sidecar in Quorn at 1030ish this morning.  His wife was on a Goldwing made into a trike.  In hindsight I should have got a photo of that too.  I spoke to them for a bit.  They hadn't heard of Ozstoc so gave them a card and told them about the forum.  Sadly I forgot to mention the RTE in Point Victoria next month.  Ride report will come later.

Dashcam footage probably has a picture of the goldwing.

I proceeded on to Hawker for the first time since 2015 and stopped for another look at the Wilson/Kanyaka ruins.

Cradock also has the same wildlife sculptures at its cairns so I am guessing the Flinders Ranges council has put them in everywhere.

In 2015 I rode past the big akubra without even seeing it but this time round I saw it.  I guess it helps when you know it's there.

I quite often read up on towns when I go through gopro/dashcam footage of it and the wikepedia page for Eurelia mentions the railway station.  In 2015 I didn't recall seeing a building let alone a railway station but this time I found it.  Other than the platform sign you wouldn't know there was a station here.  No tracks, sleepers or platform are visible and the building could be anything.  I did walk in but this was as close as I could get the bike.

In hindsight I should have refuelled in Hawker, and I probably would have got to a proper service station but rather than be that prat who runs out of fuel I decided to use an automated Hunts pump at Orrooo.  I had to prepay so I set it for $15 only for the pump to stop on $12·21 for no reason.  I sent them an email to their website last night so let's see if the Hunts respond.

Next stop was to Magnetic Hill at Black Rock to get a photo of the big magnet.  I'd ridden past it in 2015 but the photo I took of it didn't have a bike in the picture.  I remember it being bigger than what I saw yesterday but maybe it's just my head playing tricks with me.  The road was a lot smoother in 2015, but I think that is down to weather we had a couple of weeks ago.  I saw debris across various dips along the R. M Willams Way getting here.

The road out to Pekina from there was much smoother.  I had planned to back track to Orroroo and then go to Wilmington but as I approached the bitumen road I thought I've just done what I did in 2015 in the reverse direction and I rode Pekina to Boolooroo Centre in 2018 but I hadn't actually gone left from here, I wonder where it goes.  The sign said Laura 46km so sod it, that's where I went.

This next photo was the purpose of yesterday's ride... to avoid the kwaka clocking up 130'000km on the daily commute.  A sign at Laura said Crystal Brook 24km and I had 26km to complete that kilometres stone so that's where I went.  I'd never actually been into the town before and I knew there was a big lizard there, plus I could do laps in quiet streets to clock up the milestone instead of being on an unsafe spot to stop on a highway somewhere so it was decided.

All in all, I did new roads from Pekina to Laura, Laura to Crystal Brook, Crystal Brook to Gulnare, not to mention Yorkies Crossing so was quite an enjoyable but long day.  I'm not sure why, but Spot didn't pick up any points between Snowtown and Port Augusta.  It has been dodgy a few times in recent months.

The k's keep on coming is the reason behind the title.  I had to chuckle when Ian on the yellow ST said his had 130'000km on the clock and he was umming and arghing on weather to sell it.  I said 130'000km is why I am out here.

What a great day out, and I'm guessing it would be around 750km.

Research has taught me these are yellow footed rock wallabies.

The kwaka won't be going on it again until it's sealed.
