Title: 2021-04-11 One Hundred And Forty Thousand Smackeroonies
Post by: on April 13, 2021, 08:36:09 AM
With the bike short of another kilometrestone I hit the road for Pinnaroo.  I can't remember why I stopped here at Eastwood but there was a reason for it.  My observations had taught me that many a rural town has an institute but it seems Adelaide wasn't immune from them either.  This was directly across the road where I pulled up.  One day I shall stumble across the Ponds Institute.

You'll notice it wasn't dark.  I stopped at Tailem Bend to put a green dot on bubbler when I turned from the Dukes Highway to the Mallee Highway.  I've been doing this a lot lately to keep Bubbler and Spotwalla on their toes.

I hadn't planned on making any stops on the Mallee Highway but spotted the Sherlock Machinery Orchestra in the corner of my eye and having not seen it before turned around for a squizz.

I wasted a lot of time playing various instruments, many of which you hit with a golf ball attached to a hose.  Apologies to the locals who were hoping to sleep in on a sunday morning.

I had planned to have breakfast in Pinnaroo.  I preferred it when it was a proper roadhouse with a proper breakfast choice.  Nowadays it's like your average OTR and did nothing for me.  I wondered what they'd have said had I gone into the truckies' lounge.

I seem to tow a lot of stuff these days.  (http://www.footballnews.com.au/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

This was probably a decent picture in it's hey day.

After bagging the big golfer in Pinnaroo it was time do the Browns Well Highway to Loxton for the first time since 2015 and the first time on the ubiquitous kwaka.  It then clocked up another kilometrestone in Karte.  140'000 klicks and still going strong.

There's a selection of buttons to use on Bubbler and I have dabbled with them many times in the past, but there is one button I hoped I'd never have to use.  That would be the one between the binoculars (which I have never used) and the chequered flag.

Alas, I used it on sunday morning.  He asked me why I was doing 115 in a 100 zone?  To be honest I hadn't noticed I was.  He also asked if I was just going for a ride so I mentioned the 140'000 kilometrestone.  He was adamant that was a lot for a bike so I figured he didn't know a lot of ST owners.

So whilst he took my licence to his car I crouched down in front of the mobius camera for a photo of me, him and his car.   :fp

He said we issue fines by email or snail mail these days and asked me which I would prefer.  I guess preferring it to be deleted and forgotten about wasn't an option and opted for snail mail.  When it arrives it'll be my first ever speeding ticket.  No excuse, but I am intrigued as to why the Mallee Highway is 110, the Stott Highway is 110 and the Paruna Alawoona Road is also 110 but the Browns Well Highway is only 100.

Needing a comfort stop I stopped in Peebinga.  Pick a tree, any tree.

Another town, another institute.  This was in Alawoona.  I took a photo in front of this very building on good friday last year when I took the kwaka out to clock up 120'000km (that was in Lameroo) on good friday last year.  For memory I played it in the where is this? game thread.

Today's dirt roads come compliments of Malpas.

Then it was off to Paruna.  This is why I know the Paruna-Alawoona Road is 110km/h.  I stopped at the general store for a caffeine boost.

I'm sure I passed salt lakes on the day but the disused railway comes compliments of Loxton.  There was an Alawoona to Paruna railway as well but the tracks have been dug up.

I bagged the big pelican at Loxton with the Firenze but took the kwaka there for the first time since I was in the area.  I've seen a lot of photos of it but few people snap it from this side.

Then it was a run along the Stott Highway through Wunkar and Swan Reach, both venues pencilled in for RTE's this year.  I stopped at took photos at the latter on the account of having to wait for a ferry.  It was a good chance to change the memory card in my dashcam.

The clouds looked ominous at Angas Valley so I stopped to put on rain gear, put away the mobius and replace it with the ghost xl drift camera.  Just as well.  It began to drizzle after that but drizzle was all it was.

Today roadworks were brought to you by the South Eastern Freeway.  It was kilometres long but lane filtering meant I didn't stop and I have no selfie to share with you.

No real problems with spot today.  I kept it on it's toes with green spots, yellow spots and other markers.  I notice the copper icon shows up as a scales of justice on the map.  It's a shame because the Bubbler picture is so much better (and more accurate).

Bad luck Bodo - you'd think that with your driving record you might have had the ticketed speed put down as 109 (I'm assuming there is a $ difference once you go more than 10kph over the limit).
In the Murray Mallee, binga is aboriginal for stop  :fp

The reason that the Browns Well 'Highway' has (or had, I think it is back up to 110 now) a 100kph speed limit is because it was deemed to narrow to be safe with road trains on it. They have done the shoulders and widened it a little over the last few months and it is supposedly now 'safe'.

It took six years to go back so I may return in 2027.

140,000 ks is pretty good.

Interesting where you shook hands with the gendarmerie, Duncan, Tipto n I took that same road to Loxton back in October 2019 and we were doing a tad more than what he pinged you for, just lucky, I guess!
