Apologies if this is a repeat.
Can we insert or embed a Google Map in a post (similar to some other forums - like http://austouring.com (http://austouring.com))?
Cheers, Michael
-
so far we can post the link to the map like this http://goo.gl/maps/cKyVY (http://goo.gl/maps/cKyVY)
some sites also use the .kml file as well and embed using that.
I think there's a BB code for maps to be embeded but I haven't seen that on here, yet

In the other forum you can wrap [GMAP] ..... [/GMAP] around the HTML code to embed the map into a post.
It's a useful function (IMHO), perhaps it can be added here. Sounds easy, but I've got no idea how it's done.
-
Yeah that would a great feature to see the map in the post rather then having to click on another link.

Bump .....
Yeah that would a great feature to see the map in the post rather then having to click on another link.
Sure would be handy, so thought I'd just bring to the attention of the-powers-at-be. Can't be too hard (says the techno duffus).

You mean like this?
to need to wrap the URL in [.html] http://URLgoeshere (http://URLgoeshere)[./html] but without the fullstop
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.572933,143.871578&spn=0.003656,0.004935&t=h&z=18&output=embed (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.572933,143.871578&spn=0.003656,0.004935&t=h&z=18&output=embed)

Looks like this only works with old Google Maps - not the new one.
Thanks to all you propeller heads who helped solve this.

another test...
Well, there you go - this is from the new google maps....
1. Draw route
2. Go to little settings icon at bottom right of screen
3. click into 'share and embed map'
4. copy text
5. back to ozstoc forum, click 'insert hyperlink' button and paste - click ok
6. add [.html] to front of code and [./html] to end of code (without full stops).
should work

You can't put in multiple destinations with the new Google maps
-
You can't put in multiple destinations with the new Google maps
Yep - see my post.
Hover over your destination and a + sign opens to add another destination

You can't put in multiple destinations with the new Google maps
Sometime last year I tried the new maps and I found I couldn't do what the old maps did so went back to the old ones.

Same... it turns out the smart people at Google fixed it. It also lets you drag you destinations to be n the order you want them...
Nope...Doesn't work
-
try editing and putting the html stuff in.
Hang on - I will....
there... looks like you can skip the "insert link" step - just paste it in your window, highlight the text, hit the 'revove formatting' icon and add the html codes to each end
-
*starts swearing* I had all that in [.html][.url]mapURL[./url][./html]
It strips out the code when I modify it
-

-
yep - loses the coding each time. :cuss
I also highlighted the pasted text, and hit the 'remove formatting' icon before adding adding the html into the code - worked fine - but for how long? :||||

Highlight all the text, hit the 'remove formatting' icon, then add this [.html] at the front and [./html] at the end - DON"T TYPE THE FULL STOPS.
And it should look like this...

I did that exactly as you did and got same thing as Marcus. I even fixed up the spaces and made sure link worked still to no avail. Could it be permission related?

Actually, yeah... Waiting for pictures to scan gives me alot of free time some days :D

Can you post up your embedded link from the old maps minus the [.html][./html] tags (and yes i know not to put the . in when doing for real)

Yeah the old google maps work fine if you follow my steps from earlier in this thread. Its the new google maps which are the problem

Yeah you kind of can and can't... The code google gives you doesn't embed like the new google maps problem. And to be honest, I like the maps all the same size to avoid cluttering up the threads.
On the plus side if you need to see a full version, then just click on the Google logo in the bottom left corner which will open up a new tab and...Ta daaaaa
-
OK so switching back to old google maps is the answer i guess .... :well :cuss
-
OK so i just tried (again) and for some reason the link i get has the entire URL twice so i have to edit the https:// to http:// twice but leaves a bunch of other junk in there too.
Here is what i get from the link in Google.
<iframe width="300" height="300" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="https://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Beechboro WA&daddr=Brookton WA to:Wagin WA to:Mt Barker WA to:Manjimup WA to:Northcliffe WA to:Nannup WA to:Busselton WA to:Gosnells WA to:Beechboro WA&hl=en&geocode=FZKwGf4dZC3pBinR0m6cUbcyKjFQP981tfAEBQ;FSsaEv4dVW_5BimBpmhn2Y4zKjEw9HkkOPYABA;FXS_A_4dkob-Bilxqdubxto2KjHQ_XkkOPYABA;FUaf7_0ddWEDBymR_okvAaE5KjFQwnkkOPYABA;FdCC9f0duj3sBinl_By2hHEwKjEA7XkkOPYABA;FY2P7_0d6-nrBinPUAFsBpQ6KjHQ7nkkOPYABA;FXiG-f0d62zmBil9Y4_SZRgwKjFQ7nkkOPYABA;FeeK_v0d5ATgBinxb-0WEjkuKjEgDXokOPYABQ;FcalFv4dxwTqBilndoXK5L0yKjFARd81tfAEBQ;FZKwGf4dZC3pBinR0m6cUbcyKjFQP981tfAEBQ&aq=0&oq=beech&sll=-33.26625,116.801147&sspn=3.981781,7.13562&mra=ls&ie=UTF8&t=m&ll=-33.26625,116.795654&spn=2.75565,3.295898&z=7&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="https://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=Beechboro WA&daddr=Brookton WA to:Wagin WA to:Mt Barker WA to:Manjimup WA to:Northcliffe WA to:Nannup WA to:Busselton WA to:Gosnells WA to:Beechboro WA&hl=en&geocode=FZKwGf4dZC3pBinR0m6cUbcyKjFQP981tfAEBQ;FSsaEv4dVW_5BimBpmhn2Y4zKjEw9HkkOPYABA;FXS_A_4dkob-Bilxqdubxto2KjHQ_XkkOPYABA;FUaf7_0ddWEDBymR_okvAaE5KjFQwnkkOPYABA;FdCC9f0duj3sBinl_By2hHEwKjEA7XkkOPYABA;FY2P7_0d6-nrBinPUAFsBpQ6KjHQ7nkkOPYABA;FXiG-f0d62zmBil9Y4_SZRgwKjFQ7nkkOPYABA;FeeK_v0d5ATgBinxb-0WEjkuKjEgDXokOPYABQ;FcalFv4dxwTqBilndoXK5L0yKjFARd81tfAEBQ;FZKwGf4dZC3pBinR0m6cUbcyKjFQP981tfAEBQ&aq=0&oq=beech&sll=-33.26625,116.801147&sspn=3.981781,7.13562&mra=ls&ie=UTF8&t=m&ll=-33.26625,116.795654&spn=2.75565,3.295898&z=7" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

Well it showed a map on the bottom wide open space in the preview but not in the post....

OK so switching back to old google maps is the answer i guess .... :well :cuss
For now...yes...
It works for Diesel because he is admin/mod/god of the forum. As you said before... permissions
Yeah, pretty ugly. That's why is easier to just use the old maps and the link inside the html tags...As it seems the forum doesn't support <iframes >
-
I got it now. Don't use the embedded map link in the old google maps as it gives you way too much info. Just use normal link and wrap in html tags removing the s from https.

Hahaha. Pezzz... that was sorted pages back, I had some screen grabs showing which link to use.
The problem is trying to embed the "NEW" Google maps (you're using the "old" google maps)
-
Ok - Marcus video worked for me - so I agree - must be a permissions thing.
Can I ask you Marcus to do a video for the old style Google Maps?
Shiney came up with the great idea to post your instructions in the 'welcome to the site' area to help newbies.
The video is much better at explaining this process.
Cheers, Diesel
PS - post it here and I'll:
A) clean up this thread leaving only the successful info; and
B) copy the next instructional video to the newbies section.

Ok

Good idea, as I have just bought an iPad mini and it is a whole new world of finding out what it can do. I even have a data plan of 500mb a month, as well as the Wifi.
Well done again Marcus. :clap
