Title: Max Weight In Panniers. ST1100
Post by: Nigel on July 04, 2014, 08:29:08 PM
Hi all , went trolling for the answer but no joy, so Question. How much weight, evenly distributed of course, is safe in the panniers ( ST1100 ). Cant find my workshop manual either so not all good in the Nigel household. Thanks to all the commanding Gurus who will pass on this info in a flash  :grin..............Nigel   :wht11

Page 5 of the ST1300 Owner Manual indicates a maximum of 9kg for each pannier and for the Top Box.  However, I can't confirm the loads for the 1100.

I had the ST11 before the ST13, and I'm pretty sure they are the same figures.
I wouldn't stress about the balance.  I ride all the time with about 9 kg of useful stuff in my RH pannier and nothing in the left.  I can't say I notice any change in the ride when I fill the LH side also.  It still wants to drift to the right.

Just waiting for someone with the Owners' Manual to confirm.
At any rate, you won't break anything with that weight, promise!

So do mine, so I would think that'd be right.

...and there was me last Easter with a 22.5 kilo bucket of Red Gum honey in the top box of the 1100, to transport 800 km from Morgan, S.A. to home   :o

Ive carried a carton in the topbox (Stubbies) and a dozen in each side. Probably could get ice in as well

I doubt the manufacturer would approve of that.

Though it might be OK if it was Sake.

If they didnt want us to carry beer(/Sake), they would have made the containers smaller

When I changed my top case over I noted the weight limit on the Honda rack to be 9kg.

I'm don't the load limit for the aftermarket case but if an OEM case has a load limit of 9kg then by logic the case must weigh zero.

The weight of the shopping I do sometimes feels at least 2x that of a 5kg bag of spuds and the top case seems to handle that ok.

Storage space ST1100= 1 full shopping trolley.

(But then, I only have to traverse the carpark, and then 10 metres on the roadway to my home with my 14 bags of groceries...)

Yeah, yeah, yeah.  Your point is??      :grin

Just pulling your leg.  Manufacturers are justifiably concerned about over-loads and cover themselves with these specs.
The limit is 9.0 kg in the ST13 topbox.
Page 7 of the manual also specifically forbids towing with the motorcycle.

I've often had more than 6.5kg in the top box and 9kg in the panniers on the 1100 without an issue as yet. If you think about it, when the pillion leans back on the back rest on the top box, this inevitably adds weight also.

I remember coming across this with my old Deuville in the UK. The 9 Kg limit is 20 pounds and is a carry over from some U.S. safety edict on "Safe loads for all motorcycles", and is not actually related to the strength on the panniers, topbox, or framework.
