Was reading on FarRiders about issues with coming across an emergency situation and knowing your position to tell 000 operator where the emergency is

Well this app for iPhone and android is a big help works without signal and uses phones gps  :like

EMERGENCY+

Don't they (000 operators) track your position anyway?, I mean what if you pass out mid call

They can geo locate based on your address info you gave, but if the phone drops out then they have no further info to go on. It happens a lot  :wink1 I have been sent out on a case at normal speed to investigate a possible rider off a motorbike query a hoax, whose phone went dead half way thru the call and could not be contacted again. We did find a rider with a leg injury.

Plus... it's awesome to be able to tell exactly which streets you are on at the time of emergency - spesh if in a strange town or suburb.

Like Turtle, I was involved in the discussion. As a Risk and Safety Officer all of our work phones (approx 225) have had this App since February and it is mandatory on all new/replaced devices.

With a  dedicated GPS and two phones with working GPS and two tablets with GPS I'm not sure if I'll need this app or not but it won't to have it on board the two phones.

Only catch would be being within any cell tower range to make an emergency call should you need to.

It does look like a slick app, but I'm sure that if I need it, I wont have phone conection.

Good for boats where motors won't start etc - can give deg/min/sec pos.

Also - if you need to report a crime or call the Ambos for someone else - stops all the ginning around in those crucial mins.   :thumbs

From a mobile you should use 112.  It is 000 equivalent, but it uses any available network and therefore gives better coverage. 

Ever wondered what that message on your phone that said "Emergency calls only"  That was because your network wasn't available, but another network was and it will always accept a 112 call.  Some networks will also accept 000 calls from any phone now as well.

I have both programmed into my phone.

000 works on any network, even without a sim card. 112 works in most countries around the world. Saves having to find out what the local emergency number is.

By the way, 191 in Thailand, 911 in the US, 999 in the UK.

Ummm ... I thought in the original post it said that it uses the gps to send distress via satellite so no need for phone coverage.

It can't use GPS satellites.  They are transmit only.  Only the US Government can transmit to them.  :grin

that is correct. If you are out of mobile range it will automatically dial 112 which will connect any GSM mobile to the satellite network at no charge. I believe a requirement in Aus since about 2005?

The app uses GPS satellite to gain position, it doesnt need a mobile network to assist in this. No phone will automatically dial 112, however, if the user dials 112 then the connection goes to 000 in Oz. The mobile phones are incapable of using satellite to make an emergency call, as they are outside the frequency rage of the phone.

An emergency 000 call will go out on any network that is available, not just your carrier. In fact you can make a 000 call with no sim card fitted to the phone.

Good find Turtle.....this issue has caused SO much confusion over many years and caught many people out....the only phone that talks through low orbit Satellites are dedicated Sat phones and NOT conventional mobile phones.

A GPS satellite is a different animal to a satellite phone satellite, the GPS satellite sends information to your GPS receiver only (although the Yanks can send data to them to build in miss information when required for military requirements). A Sat phone Satellite like Iridium are transmit & receive that then patches into land based mobile phone network.   


We use a Motorola 9500 when we were remote area camping, and a current 9505A at work.

If you are spending considerable time away from the land based mobile network there were Federal Government subsidies available to assist in Satellite phone purchase.

The Emergency + app will still revile reveal your GPS position by Long/Lat when out side ANY land based mobile network if used on a AGPS devise (so NOT a WiFi only iPad). The mobile will only communicate via voice/data if it has coverage with YOUR service provider or via "000" & 112 only with another land based mobile service provider.

Sorry to seam like I'm pushing this info but I have seen the result of the spread of this mis-information.  :OldMan

For this you would need a PLB and after having a crash out of mobile reach I was lucky the schoolbus coming past carrying a sat phone. This got me quick to hospital at 214kmh.  I carry a PLB with me on my body on all rides. You never know where you go and end up.

Wow. Glad you are OK and that bus was in the area. I never thought of that much as I generally do long rides with other people but on Border Run I had a few hundred ks where it was just me. Might be food for thought. What sort of $ is that? Does SPOT have that sort of thing integrated? I guess yours is a device you have on your person rather than bike mounted. Not a bad idea considering in most accidents you part company with the bike sometimes by a decent distance.
