Oz on an ST with AL
« on: July 10, 2016, 08:27:56 AM »
Hi guys, I'm off on my 'round Oz trip in a couple of weeks (soon as my bike is out of the shop).  If you'd like to follow me around on my trip, you can follow me on my Facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/Alpal51/

I'll also be posting updates on this thread as I go along.

Cheers! :hatwave :runyay :Blow :beer

I will watch your adventure with interest and envy, having completed a lap myself.   Don't forget that there a Bed & Shed in Adelaide if you need it.   :thumb

Have a great ride, and same warnings about obstacles/livestock as I've put on FB. :grin

Will watch and read with interest.

Will you have a spot or Spotwalla for us to keep an eye on progress? The likes of Kev Murphy can keep an eye on progress and if there is any lack of progress, raise an alarm if necessary.

Have you got the OzSTOC RAN (Rider Assistance Network) number in your phone?

Bed, shed and fed in Kallangur, just of the highway 30 km north of Brisbane CBD if you need it.

Thanks for the reminder about Spotwalla.  I was reading up on what it was about and how to use it when I got distracted and haven't thought about it since. I'll have to get back to my research.

I have family in Adelaide who would kill me if I didn't stay with them. But hopefully we can catch up and go on a day ride. Look forward to it.

One of the great joys of long distance touring is meeting up with old friends, and making new ones, for coming into a caravan park on a bike on your own is a great conversation starter in camp kitchens.

So just to keep the terminology from getting away from us and adding confusion.....

SpotWalla is a secure personal location manager that supports a wide range of satellite-based, cell-based and web-based tracking devices including SPOT Messengers, DeLorme and Inmarsat phones; Android devices running Bubbler GPS; iOS devices running SWConnect or gibbyTrip; any device connected to the APRS network; and a maritime tracking device called The Wirie Pro.

SPOT Messengers in versions 1,2 and now 3 are the most common stand alone device for motorcyclists and hikers etc, Bubbler and SWConnect are for smartphones with AGPS capabilities.

Spotify is a music app available for Apple & Android.....it's cool too  ;-*

Ok. I've got Spotify, so I know what that is.  But I'm still struggling with Spotwalla.  I've created a Spotwalla account and I've bought the Bubbler app (I have an android phone).  Did it last night, actually. Now I just have to work out how the whole bloody thing works. I'm also trying to work out how My Maps works.  Been working on a map on and off for a couple of weeks now.   :think1 :H :cuss

You have to setup a trip, with start date and time, and a finish date and time. Set spot wallah to use your phone for positioning information. It does take a bit of fiddling to get it going.

That's a problem in itself because even if I can set a start date, I have no idea when the finish date will be.  LOL.

1. You have to set up a name for your phone in Bubbler,

2. then go to Spotwalla, login, and in top right, click on your account name to see the drop down list and:
a. select Devices ,
b. Create a device,
c. Choose Bubbler GPS,
d. then add the Name you given the phone in Spotwalla. (basically you are pairing your Bubbler with Spotwalla)
You have to setup a trip, with start date and time, and a finish date and time. Set spot wallah to use your phone for positioning information. It does take a bit of fiddling to get it going.
That is done under the heading Trips (also under the drop down under your profile name) not the button on the home page.
