Grating noise at take off.
« on: November 28, 2016, 09:42:02 AM »
Hi all. I am concerned about my clutch or is it?
Occasionally when I ease out the clutch a bit quickly, especially early when coolish or after sitting in neutral at the lights then drop into first at the change I get a nasty grating noise. Like I left the side stand down. I then ease out more slowly (tricky on an ST) all is ok.

My concern: is this normal? Is this the clutch or drive spline bearings?

Any help appreciated.
Greg.

This seems to be a common issue and it happens to mine BUT I don't know what is happening or why it happens.

Some others have done the technical talk about this but I get lost but they don't seem to be worried about it..

Try a search of the Forum.  It's been discussed before.  Apparently the clutch basket can be rattley when cold, and especially if you cane it a bit early in the day.  Won't break, and can be avoided by gentle clutch engage and acceleration.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Its not an issue as such, its the ST clutch groan, quite common when oil is cold, and or the oil is old.

mine is more so when I let the clutch out gently or have been riding the clutch ever so slightly at the  lights. If I let the clutch out smoothly and quickly and have had the clutch in full compression I don't get any issues.

Morning Greg et al…

My concern: is this normal?

…No. But as others have correctly pointed out clutch judder is commonly reported on ST1100’s.

...Could be. Firstly, you have to correctly identify the source. It would help if you gave out a bit more info about the noise. EG from where…front, rear; can you feel the clutch judder when the noise occurs etc. Also what year is your bike? EG 1990/91 incorporated x2 judder rings (springs), discontinued after (what I imagine), was Honda utilising a different friction compound on the 2 or more of the friction plates.

For what it’s worth and if it is originating from within the clutch assembly, until it becomes problematic, I wouldn’t be overly concerned.

That’s a start

Cheers the can :-)

Thank you everyone here. I feel a lot better about the grating noise.
Yes Greencan I'm sure its the clutch. I forgot to mention that it stalled twice when this happened ergo my concerns.  (Did something brake etc) .
The fact that the bike is STrong and smooth even after grating I thought I best ask.

Cheers all. Hope to see you on the 10th. Thinking of taking back roads from Midland. :beers

If it stalled, you may need just a few more revs as you let out the clutch.

Bit late on this and will discuss in detail on the 10th at Chidlow. Questions are oil in use, cold hot and can it be forced such as clutch engaged with brake on.
