Things to do in Tassie.....
« on: February 23, 2019, 08:15:30 AM »
Open season folks...

Got a great place you remember or know of in Tassie that your fellow villains  should check out when touring here?

Here's your chance to showcase it.
One Rule though: Start your post with  NORTH WEST, CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, CRADLE COAST, EAST COAST etc so when flicking through, we can instantly see what area/region you are talking about to make our planning easier.

Cheers, Diesel

CENTRAL HIGHLANDS:
Ride the Cressy-Poatina-Bothwell-Hamilton road for a very memorable experience. Either direction is fine.

And no whinging about how Australia got left off the map either!   :rofl :rofl

CENTRAL-NORTH EAST
Start at Longford-Cressy across to Campbell Town on to the Lake Leak Hwy down St Mary's Pass onto Scamander, Pyengana; Weldborough through to Scottsdale and then up The Sidling towards Launnie cutting around to go out E Tamar Hwy to the Batman Hwy across the Batman Bridge left down to Exeter and right onto the Frankford Rd back towards Port Sorrell...Full day loop
One day you will wake up and there won't be anymore time to do the things you've always wanted so do them NOW!!!
Remember there are 7 days in a week and Someday isn't one of them!

NORTH WEST

Stanley - Smithon - Woolnorth, to the end of the sealed road (then, unless they have extended the seal, double back) - Arthur River - Couta Rocks (again double back, unless they have sealed the loop) - Stanley.

There's a series of dips and crests between Arthur River and Couta Rocks, you need to concentrate if you don't want to get the ST airborne at around 100km/h.

Just beyond end of the seal:

Arthur River:

Couta Rocks:

CRADLE COAST

There are some very sweet back roads (not all sealed, so you might need to back track if you are to avoid any gravel) inland from Ulverstone.

The lookout over Gunns Plains is one location that I'll remember for some time.

CENTRAL HIGHLANDS

Here's a nice little loop:

https://goo.gl/maps/BHQtuRPJX1F2

Only 204km, but add another 50km (and 1.5 hours), or so, as it's worthwhile riding the twisties up and down, or down and up, a couple of times at either end of the Great Western Tiers.  We drove the western side of the Great Lake back in Jan this year, there was approx. 2km of good gravel between the Great Lakes Lookout (see pic of view below) and Doctors Point.  With the rate the road is being upgraded with a seal, I would not be surprised if it was completed by November.  Either way, I'll be adding it to my ride list.   I'm sure Big Gaz will keep us informed.

A road in this area to avoid is the Marlborough Highway.  Despite being classified as a Highway, it does not live up to it.  Only about 30km of gravel, but shyte gravel it is.

https://goo.gl/maps/dnyvTU4HGgF2

This is NOT on my ride list.

Before and / or after Nigel checks his roots at Gowrie Park, he gets an opportunity to take this view in on a half day diversion.

At a roadside lookout on Mount Claude looking towards Mt Roland.

SOUTH WEST - LAKE PEDDER - GORDON DAM WALL:

Probably the most memorable ride in Tassie.
Fuel up before you go on this 200km total out/in ride, and make sure you stop at the lookout (marked).
You can also have lunch at Lake Pedder Lodge.

Be sure to stop and see Mt Wedge on the way - there may be an RTE here...

Stunning scenery that will literally take your breath away - go to the END OF THE ROAD!

Yes, go to the end ......

208 friggin' steps - prove me wrong!

And along the way, enjoy the views.

And the road.

Or both.

Only around 260 days (for me) to go.

I'm spending three nights in Swansea so shall keep that in mind.

Three nights?  Something I wouldn't be doing, unless I my wife had family there, or if the bike broke down.  Although there is (well last visit in 2014) a very nice water front bakery with great views.

How do you know when you're at Nowhere Else?  In May 2015, I rode up & down, down & up the road half a dozen times, didn't see any signs.

Wow!  That's one I haven't done, so it should go on The List.  Is it a practical day out from Port Sorel or would it need an overnight?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Four and half hours one way accoding to google maps.  I think I shall be doing when I stay in Hobart (two and a half hours).
