Five Flags Hotel RTE 14 Nov 2020
« on: November 17, 2020, 01:53:30 PM »
Filled tank, loaded jam and packed my bike late on Friday night. Didn't sleep too well, as looking fwd to a real trip at last to catch up with many old friends, and meet a couple of new ones after all the restrictions for the past several months. Awoke around 5.30 am, showered and prepared to leave around 6.15am (daybreak). Weather was a little chilly, with light mist and occasional heavier spots, so I kitted up in my wet gear.
Had prepared GPS directions on Friday afternoon.

Very light traffic all the way to Hamilton/Dunkeld, turned off onto secondary roads before reaching Glenthompson, continued through Willaura and on to Maroona and Ararat, where I took a short coffee break at 8.50am. Weather had cleared up, and was comfortably warm after I passed through Hamilton. A good run thru Elmshurst, Avoca (where I didn't stop for a crocodile sandwich on this trip  :grin) then thru to Maryborough where I had a chat with a young couple who were touring in a camper, they were heading to Mildura, on their way to Perth. Very little traffic all the way from Ararat to Castlemaine, and I made good road time. Only a little over 45 minutes from Maryborough to the Five Flags Hotel, where I arrived around 10.45am. Parked the bike, and waited for people to start arriving.

Russel and Lawrence soon arrived, and we had a coffee while waiting for the rest to arrive. Good turnout of bikes. (click on pics for a closer view) Great warm weather for the day.

A great meal and good service, jam was passed around, and it was really good to connect with everyone again. Many Thanks to Michael for organising the meet. Please add your own photos to enhance this post.

Being as I had the longest trip to travel home, I was the first to leave at around 2pm.
Diverse route home, very casual, just for helmet time. I refuelled at Ballarat, and arrived home at 6.20pm. Did not wear gloves on the way home, and have light sunburn on hands.
Total distance for the day, 740km.

Edit, forgot to mention ... just west of Ballarat, a bright yellow ST1100 and sidecar, eastbound towards Melbourne, couple onboard waved back furiously to me.  :thumb

Hmmm ... Seems I got a bit of wriggle on, somewhere on the backroads while travelling? ...
Damn GPS records everything...

Seems to be a common fault with Garmin's, Kev!
One of mine has shown much higher speeds than I know I was doing too... :||||

It can do that if you turn it on in a plane..

I have never seen a Garmin give a false high speed reading, I have 4 at the moment, and have used many others.

If it is a recent occurrence, send me the datalog and I will see if I can find out where it occurred.

I was actually only having a bit of a "lend" of Kev, Brock... :whistle

Although in saying that, my Garmin did show a speed I know I never did.

It happened way back in 2012 when driving my diesel i30 up to the Daintree. I was still in Victoria at the time though...

As can be seen in the pic, the max speed was 175kph...
I had exceeded the speed limit while overtaking another car but I know I never got close to that speed.
I'm not even sure my i30 would even do those sorts of speeds...

One of life's little mysteries, I guess... :think1

Pussy ...

Taken from my old TomTom Rider.  I advertised it on (I think) ADVRider with a comment that I wouldn't reset it to factory settings if a purchaser didn't want me to reset it.  Buyer wasn't gunna tell anyone that he'd bought it secondhand, reckoned he could earn some bragging rights with his mates.  Sounds fare, I suppose.

BTW - Rusty, did you take a wrong turn between Campbells Creek and Daylesford?  Martin and I waited at the petrol station for a while after he filled-up, then saw you pass as we were leaving.

BTW 2 - How many litres per 100km when you filled up?
Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

If I'd known I was gunna live this long, I woulda looked after myself better

I pulled up just out of Daylesford at the big roundabout trying to decide which way I'd go...in the end, as you saw, I decided to head through Daylesford and then on Sailors Falls. I was gonna stop and take a few photos but every man and his dog was there so I just continued on to the Western Fry...

Oh, I did top up the tank at the BP servo heading out the other side of Daylesford.
I didn't take that much notice of the fuel consumption at the time of filling up but it did drop down to 5.9l/100k while motoring along on the Western Fwy.
It's still sitting on that figure even after a few rides since then...
