Clutch basket failure.
« on: June 20, 2021, 12:45:46 AM »
Have had the clutch release squark noise when cold from my ST1100Ax 50th :gldst11

I was going to change the clutch soon but then this happened...

Clutch was making a fluttering/wooshing sound as i was using it on the 8 mile journey to work, as i was riding along the last bit of road i was engaging and disengaging the clutch to see if it still made the sound.

As i turn left into my works car park it is a blind corner so I pulled the clutch in, incase there is a large truck coming off the weighbridge there was a loud crack and the engine cut out.

Had to rock the bike to get it into neutral and push it in to the workshop

Thought it was the timing belt at first, but checked that and there was oil under the bike so removed the belly pan and found the clutch cover smashed.

After removing the clutch cover it looks like a clutch disk has fractured and the clutch outer basket has also fractured, the piece that broke off the clutch basket jammed against the casing/cover and smashed the cover.

Anyone seen anything like this on a ST1100 before?

I have never heard of this before..Maybe the clutch pack failed to compress, and the hyd pressure cracked the casing.
