Transporting bikes to NZ...
« on: March 28, 2021, 10:48:47 PM »
Hi all, I haven’t stick my head in for a while, life has kept me too busy to be mucking about on the interwebs!

My wife and I are seriously considering migrating our family to NZ, where she’s from and where all her family still lives. I’m slowly trying to get my head around what things to take with, and what to sell off and start again (it’s now that I regret having so many interests that involve old or hard to find equipment, all of which is bulky and expensive to replace!). One thing I’m not sure on, is whether to sell off the bikes and get a new one in NZ, or take them with us.

I know a few of us here travel between here and NZ regularly, can anyone give me a rough guide to transporting a bike? I’ve heard stories ranging from “all fluids dropped, had to be dry inside and out, and customs will charge a fortune to check that it is” right down to “nah Mate just house it off and park out in a container, then get straight on the road on the other side”... shy real first hand experience would be appreciated!

Might be better to try find a shipping agent, they will have all the info. No doubt, the bike will need to be pressure washed to ensure no beasties travel with you.NZ is pretty much as anal as Oz when it comes to shipping stuff.

Have a look at what these folk have to offer.  They have dedicated shipping containers designed to carry bikes.

I've just tagged Michael (I can't remember his forum name) on FB, who moved back to NZ, and I'm sure he took his ST1100 with him.

Well there's a simple solution for you both, just swap ST1100s - might be a cash balance to work out, as I think Steve's 1100 is in better nick than Denis'.

Hi
I took my ST1100 back with me, and not really worth it unless the bike something special, it was 4 years ago and with COVID even harder and much much much more expensive
Costs were in a special motorcycle container, re-enforced cardboard.
$1500 freight, potentially 3 or more times that now post COVID
$200 Cleaning
$560 NZ agent fees
$180 Landing cost
$580 Customs
$520 Ministries Ag and Fishers inspection
$220 Poof of ownership
$460 Pre-registration inspection and if past a certain age will need pollution check
$560 registration
And you are done and on the road riding
Now I was unlucky with customs and maf inspection as they are not normally done
Is it worth it not really and freight companies will not tell you this as they want your business

You could also try Willship international. They'll give you an instant quote.

Their quote, just now, for my ST1300:

  *  Departure: Melbourne, Australia
  *  Destination: Auckland, New Zealand
  *  Motorcycle: Honda ST1300
  *  AUD $1,745.00

(Long time between log-ins, this year has just been nuts!)
Denis, I’m actually toying with the idea of selling our ST11, not sold on it yet, but it’s been a thought for the past couple months. Just thought I’d mention incase you end up looking to sell your NZ bike and pick one up here
