No offence guys but I don't understand why you would need a gear indicator? I know exactly what gear my bike is in by the revs v speed, (3000 rpm @ 100kph = 5th gear, 3000 rpm @ 80kph = 4th gear etc...)and when it's in neutral I have a light to tell me.
I guess I just use the gears and don't worry about which one I'm using at the time.
You're absolutely right, Bear, and for years I did the cross-check.
In one sense it's just another "nice to have" farkle.
In another, it's a glance at the indicator rather than at two gauges followed by a bit of a mental juggle.
I know some folk count gears, or use regular patterns like skipping 2nd and 4th.
For me, I like lotsa pretty lights
