The ST1100 has a carb, not an FCU.  Hence you need the speed sensor.

The ST1300 plugs into the diagnostic plug and picks up the data from the ECU.

I have the DS series which doesn't have the ATRE.  Again, the 1100 version won't have ATRE for the above reason.

There's a cheaper, simpler version discussed somewhere on this forum.  It uses magnetic pick-ups on the gear lever to count the gear changes and display the selected gear.  I believe the user was happy with it.

That would depend how many magnets it uses.  IIRC the MC Cruise fills all the holes whereas the gear indicator may only use one like a speedo inductor magnet.

No offence guys but I don't understand why you would need a gear indicator? I know exactly what gear my bike is in by the revs v speed, (3000 rpm @ 100kph = 5th gear, 3000 rpm @ 80kph = 4th gear etc...)and when it's in neutral I have a light to tell me.

I guess I just use the gears and don't worry about which one I'm using at the time.

You're absolutely right, Bear, and for years I did the cross-check.
In one sense it's just another "nice to have" farkle.
In another, it's a glance at the indicator rather than at two gauges followed by a bit of a mental juggle.
I know some folk count gears, or use regular patterns like skipping 2nd and 4th.

For me, I like lotsa pretty lights

I use the old tried and true method of :- 1 ) If not sure in top gear change up  2) If still not sure, see 1). 3) Not enough revs, change down.

You dont even need to look down to make it work..

I do like the idea of my bike becoming farklelicious or techfarkled to it's eye ballz with widgets gadgets etc.

Voice activated would be a nice add-on...Earl Grey...hot, a moment of special effects and noise later and viola!

The ST11 will do something similar, all you need to do is redline it through the gears..supposedly  ::)

Unless you're drag racing the ST1100 will accelerate plenty fast enough. Just drop back a gear to get the revs up and go for it. I've never had a situation where I really needed more acceleration than the 1100 can provide.

My magnetic hall effect gear indicator works a treat. Mounted up on top of my inyourface gps speedo, its a great way to ensure i am in the right gear.
