Hey Biggles, which model gear indicator do you have and do you have an ST11 or ST13?

Since the ST11 is not mentioned as a compatible bike I sent them an email just to be sure.

Cheers,

Mech.

Here's the details from the supplier guys regarding ST1100 compatibility:

Hello,

Thank you for your email.

You need the GIpro X-type with our Wheel Speed Sensor kit, it will work great. Part no:
  GIPRO-X + GPX-WSS

Here's the install manual:

The ST1100 has a carb, not an FCU.  Hence you need the speed sensor.

The ST1300 plugs into the diagnostic plug and picks up the data from the ECU.

I have the DS series which doesn't have the ATRE.  Again, the 1100 version won't have ATRE for the above reason.

There's a cheaper, simpler version discussed somewhere on this forum.  It uses magnetic pick-ups on the gear lever to count the gear changes and display the selected gear.  I believe the user was happy with it.

Hmm, I wonder if that would work with the magnets that are used for the mccruise (installed inside the hex bolts holding on the rear rotor)?

That would depend how many magnets it uses.  IIRC the MC Cruise fills all the holes whereas the gear indicator may only use one like a speedo inductor magnet.

No offence guys but I don't understand why you would need a gear indicator? I know exactly what gear my bike is in by the revs v speed, (3000 rpm @ 100kph = 5th gear, 3000 rpm @ 80kph = 4th gear etc...)and when it's in neutral I have a light to tell me.

I guess I just use the gears and don't worry about which one I'm using at the time.

You're absolutely right, Bear, and for years I did the cross-check.
In one sense it's just another "nice to have" farkle.
In another, it's a glance at the indicator rather than at two gauges followed by a bit of a mental juggle.
I know some folk count gears, or use regular patterns like skipping 2nd and 4th.

For me, I like lotsa pretty lights    :grin

I use the old tried and true method of :- 1 ) If not sure in top gear change up  2) If still not sure, see 1). 3) Not enough revs, change down.

You dont even need to look down to make it work..   :grin :grin :grin

Same method I use Brock  :wink1

The ST11 will do something similar, all you need to do is redline it through the gears..supposedly  ::)

Unless you're drag racing the ST1100 will accelerate plenty fast enough. Just drop back a gear to get the revs up and go for it. I've never had a situation where I really needed more acceleration than the 1100 can provide.

I've got one of those! Was working perfectly until one morning I asked for some Eggs Fairfax to accompany the Earl Grey...stopped working now :'(

Ciao, the can :)

My magnetic hall effect gear indicator works a treat. Mounted up on top of my inyourface gps speedo, its a great way to ensure i am in the right gear.
