Author Topic: Lets Pick a UHFCB Ch for OzSToc rides (Read 7698 times)

So with many members using UHFCB radio's lets pick a Channel for club rides etc........Ch.13 has been used by some on occasions in the past, my thoughts are lets pick one, promote it here on the forum so we are ALL advised of the correct UHF CB Channel for OzSToc rides........save any confusion for future rides.

Here's some of the simplex (non-repeater) Channels that other users.

Ch 10 - 4WD channel ( started as the Simpson Desert chat channel but has expanded to clubs etc)

Ch 14 - Ulysses

Ch 18 - Caravan & Motorhomes (Good info here at times)

Ch 29 - Pacific Hwy (Truckies)

Ch 40 - Truckies (everywhere else) We use this most of the time.......

So I vote for Ch.13............add your opinion below and let one of the mods pick the channel and set it in stone.

Channel 13 is supposedly a common channel used in Queensland so may as well go with that I suppose. Easy enough to have a channel as a primary channel (on my CBs you can set a primary channel that has priority for receiving and transmitting) and scan the rest to pick up road information. Channels 29 and 40 are road channels, but the truckies seem to think they own them.

I agree, I have used and monitored Channel 13 before, and it would make a good general monitoring channel for riders.

I also agree, most truckies use every channel they can think of simply because they think they own them ALL!!

I've heard other riders on CH13, so it might be becoming a default among m/c riders. I'm happy with it.
Do any of our gurus have a better idea of a seriously under-utilised channel? Might well be different in various States.

Anything between Ch.10 and Ch.30 keeps you away from the Repeaters etc......picking any channel can run the chance of being used anywhere locally, from the local timber yard to a road works gang......all you can do is suck it and see !!!

With 76 channels available now I'm thinking a lot from 41 upwards would be free as most long time users would still only have 40 channel units, I have no idea how many of us this applies to but anyone getting UHF now will have 80.

I just bought an 80 channel unit. When I tried it out there were a few of the above 40 channels being used. My little cheapie 80 channel hand held did not come close to picking them up.

I have found that a Handheld isnt too good for mobile coms as it seemed to be prome to catching lots of noise. Squelch had to be turned right up.

I lioke to use 39, as its easy to flick to 40 if needed. 41 could be used for the same reason.

My mates and I usually use Ch18 when touring, as we can chat with the "Grey Nomad" caravans who are a great source of info.

I have an Icom 400 pro and I've programmed an OzSTOc group into it with Ch 13 for OzSTOC, Ch 29 for the Pacific Hwy between the Gold Coast and Maitland and 40 for all other highways.

I've also programmed it as an 80 Channel UHF CB and a group for local SES frequencies in an emergency some groups as receive only for Fire and Police (for interest and because I can).

In the West, we have picked ch50 as the group channel, as its away from the normal chatter

I think it may be a while before everyone has an 80 channel. So 50 would be quieter.

Locally we're using 13, which is a good choice because it is away from repeater up and down links and far enough away from 40 you don't get truckers going "down a couple"

If some one in the group is behind the times here in the west, then they are on their own...

Not really, we will change to another lower channel. Tho most of the guys seem to have 80Channel here.

Discovered recently that all the trucks and traffic blokes on the roadworks on the Pacific Hwy are using 13. Was a pain in the bum with all the roadworks.

As a truck driver around Melbourne, I find that different company's run on different chanels, ch 40 is the mobile one in general, but stop go guys at road works ect can be any where, the good thing is if you are out and about, you still might get enough silence to hear when you are in a group,
Ch 50 to me seems a good option for the reason that a lot of guys won't be above ch 40. As yet I don't have a UHF on bike yet, but also like the idea of ch18 for info from the grey nomads.

I think a Channel selection like Ch.50 would be fine in a few years once we have the greater majority on the new 80ch radio......but really just look at the group your riding with at the time and select a channel to suit all in the group, be it the likes of 50 or 13.....

Be nice if all UHFCB users would be more aware of the Channels they shouldn't use.....

That is a particular bug bear of mine.

Channel 5 and 35 are for emergency use only.

Channels 31 to 38 and 71 to 78 are "uplinks" to repeaters.

Repeaters allow for duplex conversions via a repeater at distances up to 200 km.

Anyone using Repeater uplink channels for simplex conversations may be unknowingly having their "private" conversation rebroadcast automatically by the repeater over a large footprint. We get it here on Channel 8 repeater at Oceanview and Channel 7 Repeater at Mt Glorious in SE Qld.

Truckers "drop down a couple" from 40 to end up on 38. through that I got to hear a Trucker tell al and sundry that he was sleeping with the bosses wife

and another gave out the pin number to his credit card.

I usually use the highway channel, ch 40, to get info on road works, floods, fire, accidents, etc; and Ch 29 on the Pacific Highway.
Truckies also use the highway channel and they are a great source of info.

The one(two) that gets me is

Channel 22 Data Only (No Voice - No Packet)

Channel 23 Data Only (No Voice - No Packet)

No-one seems to know what to use these for.... Wasnt there when I started, A long Long time ago (Still got the Philips FM320 as well)
