A Recent Pre-ST1300 Ride ......
« on: August 17, 2013, 09:09:06 AM »
A little 'self-indulgence' on my pre-ST1300 ride 'to' and 'from' the 2013 Ulysses AGM at Maryborough QLD.  This goes for almost a month, too much info for one post, so some patience, please

Tuesday 2 April

With more Easter traffic traveling north rather than south, Mrs W and I headed north. A quick sprint up the Hume Freeway and Olympic Way found us at Henty for the night.

Our route:
http://goo.gl/maps/kO7h9

Our hosts for the night at Henty Central B&B were Warren & Elaine Heycox who provided a double room, ensuite, a full breakfast and a large dose of good old fashioned country hospitality for $65.00.

Warren is a former Ulyssian (......former because in an earlier life "on-the-farm" when $$$ got tight he had to sell the Harley to buy a tractor. WTF! Isn't this a case of swapping a tractor for a tractor?). Anyway, despite the Mighty CB and trailer being securely locked behind a fence and gate, under a huge tree in the backyard, Warren asked if I wanted to cover the bike. I said I would, but forgot.

In the morning I go out to find this:

First class effort Wazza.
 :thumbsup

Today's distance = 380km.

Wednesday 3 April

Ahhhh! Fresh fruit & cereal, Elaine's soft-poached eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and crispy bacon on toast, bottomless mug of coffee - what more can a bloke ask for before a big day's ride?

Today's route:
http://goo.gl/maps/iiVjM

From Henty along the Olympic Way via The Rock, Wagga Wagga, Junee (cup of coffee and chat with a very happy ST1100 owner and his wife at the coffee shop at the Loftus B&B - bike friendly courtesy of Mr ST1100, and all the bike mags he and his mates have supplied), Cootamundra, Young, Cowra (lunch at Royce's Cake Shop in the main street, mmmmm! worth stopping at), Canowindra, Orange, Molong, Wellington to Gulgong.

Over-night at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Motel rooms out the back, small but clean and tidy, plenty of hot water, not cheap ($106), off-street parking but not secure (like I was told when I booked), great mixed grill, cold beers, greater local reds (from Mudgee).

Today's distance = 534km - not a long ride, but enough with a pillion and 220kg trailer, good bed, good sleep.

Zzzzzzzzz!!!!
Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

.... and an endless stubby.

Make the journey part of the holiday .....

Thursday 4 April

Today was Gulgong to Wallibi Point, this was 441km direct which included a lot of the Pacific Highway, but who wants to go that way?

This was our route, only 3km longer and presumably a better ride, but this was very disappointing due to the condition of much of the road between Singleton and Taree.
http://goo.gl/maps/c9OdV

However the scenery was good.   On the Golden Way, somewhere between Cassillis and Merriwa (probably closer to Merriwa):

Excellent breakfast at the Merriwa Bakery:

On the road again:

We stayed at a Freesort (cousin's house) for three nights whilst we caught up with uncles, aunties, cousins, etc ....

If you stand on tippy-toes and lean off the second floor balcony (whilst Helen, or someone else his hanging on to your belt), you don't get this view:

You get that view on you pre-breakfast walk. Couldn't help mucking around with the colours.

Today's distance = 444km.

Sunday 7 April

Taree to Glen Innes via Oxley Highway and this route:
http://goo.gl/maps/E32g7

Taree to Wauchope (B) turn-off on the Pacific Freeway/Highway, four lanes divided, 100km/h & 110km/h speed limit.   When NSW roads are good, they are very good, this was no exception.   And when NSW drivers (NSW plates) drive fast, they drive very fast.  Maybe not fast by some UK and European standards, but 140 to 150km/h on some of the roads of these standards is fast.  I would not like to say if the CB and trailer could keep, that might be incriminating ........
 o:)

Wauchope to Gingers Creek (C) very tight, challenging, especially with a loaded CB and trailer - must go back one day and ride it unencumbered.

These views are really not adequate:

Turn right at Walcha, join New England Highway, bypass Armidale, passed these locations.

The highest caravan park in Australia (1,350m I think):

Approaching this location we had a first and only rain for the four weeks. Well, technically not rain, but hail. A short sharp dump, dry in a five minutes. Not surprising, it was the highest point on the New England Highway:

Overnight at the Central Hotel (aptly named) at Glen Innes, with one of the best meals (for the four weeks) at the RSL - the Surf 'n' Turf is highly recommended.

I hope I've all of the pics labelled correctly and inserted in the right places, apololgies if not!

Today's distance = 405km.

Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

Monday 15 to Saturday 20 - the AGM

Helen returned to Melbourne via Jetstar, and then six days melded into one. Could've been the heat and the humidty (28C & 99%), could've been the beer - yep.

Mick off-the-leash.  Whoo!  Hoo!

I suspect many of you know about Ulysses and the AGM?  I f not, check this: http://www.ulyssesclub.org/

We are a social club for motorcyclists over the age of 40. We are the largest organisation of this kind in Australia.

Membership of the Club is open to any person, subject to the National Committee approval, who has attained the age of 40 years and who holds a current motorcycle licence.

There were around 3,500 to 4,000 attending the AGM at Maryborough.  In 2007 there was 6,118.

Anyway back to the report ......... I only got drunk once, stayed that way for the six days.  Double dose heart and blood pressure pills are precious.
The Piazza & Beer Hall:

Bruce & Burkey

Burkey (right) is a mate of a mate of a mate, and good bloke too.

Bruce (left) we met at the AGM, and is a champ. He is 85 yo, rode his '48 BSA from Gunnedah (around 850km).  BSA conked out late on day two of the ride, rather than leave the bike on the side of the road or the bush, "some prick might have pinched it", he rolled out his swagged and slept with it, next morning he called for a maxi-taxi with a rear lift ramp, with bike in back of taxi he was delivered to the AGM some $300.00 lighter.

We said,"... bull shit Bruce", so he took out his iPhone and showed us the pics.

An 85 yo, '48 BSA and an iPhone - go figure!!!

Bruce went on with the iPhone a Googled some photos of him and his son in the Sydney Skinny Swim. He assured us that he kept his kit on for the 900m swim - I hope so.  Otherwise, it may not have been too pretty.

At times the BAC got low enough, there were plenty of test rides, like Bandit 1250, DL650, FJR1300, GTR1400, ST1300.

I gave the Suzuki boys a good marketing idea and suggested they put up a sign out the front:

Kawasaki GTR1400

They weren't impressed.    I said let me finish, the sign should read:
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

Kawasaki GTR1400 = Suzuki Bandit 1250 plus DL650.

I think it'll catch-on.

Stats for the week - too blurry.

Saturday 20 April

Maryborough to Clifton went something like this:
http://goo.gl/maps/zpxC5

Late start for Mal (my riding buddy for the trip home) and me after drying and packing tents and squeezing gear in the trailer.

Early lunch at Tiaro.

Then secondary roads, Bauple - Woolooga Road very nice, Wide Bay Highway, via Kilkivan (nice little town), Goomeri, Burnett Highway, Nanango, Yarraman, start of the New England Highway, through Toowoomba and overnight at Clifton.

Clifton is a town a mate moved to in 70's. George (the mate) called, wrote, called - "you gotta come up a visit". So I did, he was long gone.

We stayed at the Clifton Arms Hotel - twin motel style cabin out the back, under cover parking - $60.00.

Dinner at O'Shanley's Irish Pub was another highlight. Cold pints of Guinness served up by Paddy (true) and Bridie (not true) and Lisa (true), and a genuine Irish Stew (true).

I take Mal's word on this. He is a chef, worked the world over in hi & lo class establishments.  He knows his tucker, and he reckoned this was the real thing.  In addition to the stew we got to re-fill the plate as many times as we liked, all for $16.00 a plate. Top value!!!

Did I mention the Guinness?   In case you forgot.

Mal's the bloke in the grey T-shirt. I'm not sure about the "other bloke" though.  Mmmmm, errrrr, that's me.

Mal's a good bloke, he looked after the "other bloke" when he got drunk and cheeky, and stopped him getting into to trouble with some of the locals.

And a genuine Iris Pub in SEQ?  Apparently there was/is a big Irish community in the area.  Although Killarney is a fair bit further south .

Today's distance = 369km.

Sunday 21 April

Clifton to Maclean went something like this:
http://goo.gl/maps/tAQCl

Early (8:00am) start today, first stop Warwick for breakfast, found a cafe with six bikes out the front, this must be the place.

Got chatting, "where are yuse guys from?"
"Melbourne".
"Wadabout yuse?"
"Lismore, Casino, Kyogle, etc ....."

Ah! Some locals, they'll some good roads.

"Well, head out of town for Killarney, then via Mt Lindsay Highway to Legume, Woddenbong and Rathdowney, then Running Creek Road and Lions Road to Kyogle."

They finished their break and took off. By the time we finished we were around 45 minutes behind them, but caught them (here-in-after called the LIARS) at the Woodenbong pub.   Why the LIARS? Because they lead us over the worst bit of road ever called highway. The Mount Lindsay Highway (MLH) may have been a grand road at some time, but would've been many, many years & tears ago, now it was rough, bouncy, patchy, shitty, crappy - and they're all good words for it.

We see six bikes at the pub, go inside to look for the LIARS, outside to the beer garden and get a roaring group, "Sorry fellas, we didn't know".

So much for local knowledge - WTF?

In better days the MLH would've / could've been one of the great roads, at least some of the scenery was good.

Two pics of Mt Lindsay:

Between Woodenbong and Rathdowney the MLH was first class, good sweeping corners, tight corners, tighter corners and the sccenery even better.

Rathdowney to Kyogle. Did I say the last section of MLH was first class? I did not leave much room to improve as Running Creek Road and Lions Road were even better.

Fast, tight, slow, sweeping, uphill 19% grade (handled superbly by the Mighty CB with trailer), down dale, farm land, along side a creek (Running Creek?), forest.   Oh boy, this one had it all.

Kyogle to Casino via Summerland Way, Woodburn to Maclean via Coraki and through farmland, sugar cane fields, old almost forgotten villages and hamlets - flat, fast and quiet.

Woodburn to Maclean via the Pacific Highway - fast, busy, crowded and to be avoided unless you wanna find a pub before it's too dark.

At Maclean we checked into the Argyle Hotel ($70.00 for twin room with ensuite A+) and Ireland to Scotland in a day.  A few cold schooners of Tooheys Old and then a short walk to the RSL for the $15.00 per head Sunday Chinese smorgasboard.

Was that Ireland, Scotland, China and Sweden, all in one day? No wonder I was so tired!

Today's distance = 372km.

The best is yet to come, and it's tomorrow.
Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

Great account.
Killaney to Woodenbong is notoriously bad.  So it Tenterfield to Woodenbong.
Glad you found the Lions Road.  But you sure took some detours to find the best!
Pretty impressive that the trailer handled all those roads.  No surprise the Honda met the challenge.  It's a 1300, after all!

Monday 22 April - the morning

Breakfast at a little Maclean cafe. Some pics in the main street whilst waiting for the soft poached eggs:

Mal:

Mal's Harley:
...

The Mighty CB with trailer and Hooker:

Then Maclean to Grafton went something like this:
http://goo.gl/maps/cH4DY

Around 60km, took 4 hours. Beautiful scenic road following the Mighty Clarence River, flat, few curves to distract a rider, little cottages, farm houses. This is a "must" road if you are in the area.

River crossings, bridges, ferries - simply breath-taking.

From bridge at Cowper:

Other direction:

On Ulmarra ferry:

View from ferry:

Ulmarra:

Sign on river bank:

I've Googled Pokerface Surfboards and am none the wiser. Anyone any ideas?

This morning's distance = 60km.

Monday 22 April  - the afternoon

The afternoon ride went like this:

http://goo.gl/maps/VXkLr

Fuel up and get some lunch at Grafton, head up the Gwydir Highway, turn off at the Old Glen Innes Road. The scenery was always changing:

An old church:

A renovator's delight:

An old bridge:

Good but slowly deteriorating sealed road for around 35km, then ...........

Gravel road, first section very loose, gravel marbles, very slippery, very slow - 1st and 2nd gear for the Mighty CB, engine temp guage showing over 100 Celsius at times. Surface improves, faster speeds, 3rd and 4th gear, temp drops.

Around a few hundred corners, uphill and down dale, and turn a corner to see the Nymboida River at Buccarumbi:

Then Dalmorton:

Around 6km further to the Tunnel on the bank of the Boyd River:

Some interior decorator had been there already:

The tunnel is listed as a "convict built tunnel" on many websites, but this has been disputed. I don't care either way, it's just something I saw on a map around 30 years, and wanted to see it since.

It's about this time I should mention that Mal's Harley was almost brand new when he left Melbourne, at this stage it had around 3,500km on the clock. From my point of view riding a new Harley on a road like this, and keeping with the Mighty CB, that's Adventure Riding. Well done Mal!!!

Mal & I had our lunch, boiled the billy (well the whistling kettle on the gas stove), had our cuppa, chatted to some gnarly adventurers on a Transalp and a KTM, drank a James Squire each, turned around (Mal had to find a spot for me to turn around the Mighty CB and trailer).

Two hours to the tunnel from Grafton, two hours back. Arrived Grafton in time to get a pub room, off-street, under cover, lock-up parking at the Great Northern Hotel, $60.00 per twin.

Whilst this ticked all of the boxes, I'd never, ever, ever, ever go back there, but that's another story.

This afternoon's distance = 145km

This afternoon's fuel consumption = 9.5 litres per 100km

It was worth it, the Tunnel was the highlight of the trip so far, and it can't be topped.

Or can it?  Just wait until you read and see what happened that evening ..........

Sorry, I've been snoozing a bit, but here goes ......

Monday 22 April (cont.)

The evening went like this......

After checking the Great Northern's credentials, settling on a bar stool with a schooner each, exchanging some pleasantries with our host Ken-the-publican and Cookie-the-cook-and-barmaid, Cookie says (as best as I can recall), "... and I suppose you c#nts will be wanting dinner too ...."

Mal and I look at each, quietly whisper shyte, but reply yep, "What's on the menu?". Menu arrives, and Cookie says have good look but I'm only doing bangers and mash.

Cookie returns from the kitchen, Mal and Cookie compare tattoos (Cookie wins). From the conversation, Cookie figure Mal's a cook, and says, "Are you a cook too?. Mal responds, "No, I'm a chef".

Now that's not the sort of response you wanna give to someone who's cooking your bangers.

I return from the Gents to hear the end of an conversation between Mal and Cookie, where Cookie say, "So how do ya want ya dinner served? Tits in, or tits out? I figure this may be some sort of code between cooks and chefs.

I found out what it means in a few minutes when dinner is served.

Warning, stop here if semi-nudity offends...........

I guess this is what tits out means:

Note: Permission asked and granted re. taking pic.

So after a good start to the evening, it got even better. The bangers, mash, plate full of freshly cooked veggies and Cookie's own gravy were excellent. But then it went down hill very very fast. Mal and I had an early night.

When checking-out in the morning I asked Ken if there was any charge for last night's entertainment. He said there wasn't.

The Great Northern, it ticks all the boxes, great meal, and entertainment, just don't go there.

The night's tally = 0km and too many schooners.

Tuesday 23 April

Late start today, cooked breaky and a couple of mugs of latte (to erase the images from last night) at a local cafe, fueled up and left around 11:00am.

The last time I (we) travelled the road from Ebor to Grafton was back in 1986 in Mrs W's XF wagon. In those days it was gravel between Ebor and Nymboida, rough gravel, corrugated gravel, rough corrugated pot-holed gravel ..... well, you get the idea.

The XF wagon was only 12 months old, the road shook the crap out of the wagon, the radio fell out of the dash onto the floor. I said to Mrs W, "Don't worry, we can't get any radio reception up here anyway......". Mmm, that wasn't smart!

Fast forward to 2013, the road is all sealed, and what a magnificent road it is now. Sure, there were a couple of sections they were patching some pot-holes, err .... washouts, but the rest ........... worthwhile detouring on the next trip, but it does lead you into South Grafton.

Stopped at the M.I.T. - Museum of Interesting Things, a private museum sponsored by Russel Crowe.  It's worth the $5 entry, just leave enough time for the tour, and take some fresh camera batteries.

Break at Ebor, drink, snack and rest. Still feeling a bit fuzzy from the previous night's consumption, Mal and I pulled up some grass under a shady tree and punched out some Zzzzzzeds for the best part of an hour.

Pushed on to Armidale and then Uralla for the night. Stayed at the biker friendly Top Pub, $60.00 (with biker discount) for motel twin room with ensuite, cool beers , great meal, great value. Even sweeter when we got the last room - bloke behind me wanted a room, as was told that bloke (me) just got the last one.

Today's distance = 218km

We waited 5 months for that revelation!

Now there's a country character cookie!  Good thing you love bangers and mash.  So next time you'll order "without"?

Great story, with pix.  Why did you go back to Grafton rather than continue to Glen Innes?  Was it because the road was likely to worsen on the range?  Or that was your plan anyway.

Thanks!
Why did you go back to Grafton rather than continue to Glen Innes?  Was it because the road was likely to worsen on the range?  Or that was your plan anyway.
The plan was to keep going, but the ride "in" was so tough, and the road beyong was an unknown quantity and quality, we figured it would be more prudent to back track.  By the time we got back to South Grafton the light was getting poor and not worth the risk travelling.

When we were filling-up the next morning we met a fuel tanker driver at the servo.  He told us the road "out" to Glen Innes was better than back to Grafton - you win some use loose some.
So next time you'll order "without"?
Let me think about that, definetly not!!!

Coupla days, not too many comments, I guess you are as stunned and Mike & Mal.

In the meantime, I've found this pic of the tunnel from the air on Panoramio. This is shared thanks to fiddyschmitt:

Explains why there is a tunnel.

Wednesday 24 April

Uralla to Goulburn went something like this:
http://goo.gl/maps/TGRXp

After an early night, good sleep (best bed for more than a week), Mal wanted to get on the road early and get home that day. Well 1,250km in one day is too far for me.

Mal insisted (he wanted to get home to Sarah - I think the previous night's entertainment must've got his juices going). I resisted, we had our first separation.

At 5:30am , the alarm went, "Mick, move ya bike", Mick gets up, goes down to bike, scrapes ice of seat - shyte it's cold ........... Mal goes, Mick's back in bed, 60 minutes more sleep, up again, scrapes ice off bike (again), Mick gets going.

Shyte it's still cold, check ambient temp on bike (the 10 year old Mighty CB has a beaut set of instruments), WTF - 4 Celcius????

Fill-up at Bendemeer, talk to nice (South African) lady at the petrol station / store / caravan park office. Irish - Sunday, Scottish - Monday, Ockers (sadly) - Tuesday, South African - Wednesday. I knew we had a multi-cultural society in Oz, but didn't it extended to rural Oz.

Stopped at Tamworth to get some spare keys cut - that's a separate story for another thread, breakfast, make a few phone calls. On the road again. Tried to get lost a few times, but couldn't. Through Muswellbrook, time for some pics.

View from a back road somewhere:

Lunch at Broke, a view somewhere on the Wolloombi Road :

South of Wollombi got to the Wisemans Ferry turn off at around 5:00pm, sign said 35km of gravel road, gravel was rough and corrugated, this I'll have to do another day (too late for exploring), turned around and headed to Sydney the easy way.

Around Sydney via the M7, joined the Hume Freeway, stopped for fuel, stopped again for a meal (I need plenty of stops as fatigue starts to creep in), arrived Goulburn around 9:00pm. Checked-in to a very nice classy motel, spa room (free upgrade?) - $60.00, relatively (to previous nights) expensive but very good value.

Today's distance = 796km

The Great Northern Road through Wollombi looks interesting.
35 kays of corrugations do NOT look inviting.
$60 motel rooms!  Didn't know they still existed!
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

The Great Northern Road is quite scenic.  At the Sydney end it goes through one of the few commons (I forget the name).

Thanks for the advice, it's good to know for next time - if there will be a next time.  It's not a road I'd be keen to take the Mighty ST1300 over.
