1990 ST1100 Water pump
« on: October 23, 2013, 01:20:51 PM »
 :|||| Hi Guys,
My st1100 1990 mdl has done the waterpump seal, after ordering a new one from Honda they just told me they
are obsolete.
I have been told later model ones (1992-93) will fit with modification, costly miskate if they don't.
Anyone have any answers to this problem? or its a whole engine transplant or wrecking!

Regards,

 Bruce

I will have a look on a site with lots of long term ST11 owners to see what the answer is (you have to be a member to look). From memory there was a design change along the way, and I do recal someone putting up pictures about it.  You could always try
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/ as they seem to be able to find obsolte new parts.  Hondaparts direct in the US is alos a possibility.

I have had a dig around and it seems that " the online sites still show the 91 water pump part number (19200-MT3-000), but the one for the 92-95s (19200-MY3-010 {supercedes 19200-MY3-000}) should work.  You'll just have to block/plug the crankcase breather nipple"

The main differences that I can see are that later up to 95 water pumps have a crankcase breather machined in. From 96 on the setup was different.  I am waiting on getting a direct answer to this question from those who have actually fitted later model water pumps to the 1990 model, but it seems like the basic waterpump casting is the same, just with some parts not machined depending on the model.

Thanks guys I will check those web sites out.
I would like to know for sure before I fit a later model pump
Because they cost $500.00,it seems a shame to wreck it
It looks like have the very first ST off the production line

Here is an initial reply from John, who owns the first model in the US and is the go to guy for such things.  I am waiting on further details about part numbers and where to get them.

John, the water pump for the other Australian model years with the oil cooler will work fine. I'm assuming your '90 is the same as the USA first year model ('91) that had the external crankcase breather chamber, all other years' were/are internal. Our '92-'95 water pumps work fine on the '91s, without modification. Trust me, I've seen one installed. I can dig up the part number if you'd like.

Regards, John [with a NOS '91 pump on the shelf for the 180k R&R next year]

And here is some more from John OoSTerhuis

John, the water pump I'm pretty sure you want is: 19200-MY3-010 (which supercedes the old PN: 19200-MY3-000) WATER PUMP
Any Honda dealer should be able to find this on their official parts software as the Honda approved substitution for the original part number (19200-MT3-000) for first-year ST1100s with the external crankcase breather chamber:

The chamber is shown in this picture just above and behind the right engine-guard/tipover-bar.  Only the USA 1991s have this, all model years after do not.  If your friend's ST1100 looks like this then the part number above is what you want.

I've got lots of more info and pictures on the three variants of water pumps if you or anyone else is interested.

Trust John OoSTerhuis to have the cleanest ST1100 in the world!
It's not that he is OCD about the bike...   :whistle       :grin
