This would be a good time to check the coolant hoses and elbows under the carbs if it hasn't been done already.

When was the last time the valve clearances checked ???

Manual states every "25,600km or 2 years" I have a shim kit.

Just thinking while the STranger is off the road  :think1

Having had my 1100's valve clearance check done for the first time (Jan 2011) at 120,000 km and still within spec I wonder if that needs to be done that often.

I think there are very few that have ever required re shimming. having read this topic a few times on the STOC site, some have checked every 25000Ks for a few times then gave up as work and expense (rocker gaskets) for nothing. Some have gone round the clock a few times now.

Exactly Allans1100, you checked yours and now have a reference to there clearances.   :thumb

Johnny doesn't have that reference data yet, and it's not that hard to do.

Checked mine at 100K and all good, and now know what they were.  :thumb

And there is a sheet to printout on the ST-Owners site that you write down the clearances for future reference.

I have replaced a number of shims over the years, but not that many really. Bike has 215,000kms on it though, but shim changes have not been desperately needed, just when it is apart may as well change the shims as most of the work is done. I have a shim kit also, that does ST1300 and other Honda models.

Not something I did. I had the bike shop do it when I got them do a carb balance, plugs and air cleaner.

I have not noticed any magical effects from carb balance and valve clearances, but if they are way out it might run way better. The ST1100 is relatively tolerant of things not being 100%.

Not really though I tended to use more fuel on average. It wasn't until I did the balance myself after doing timing belt and coolant hoses etc that I think the dealer's mechanic never had much to do with STs.

I had an impression that he may have used the standard 4 vacuum gauges but only connected three carbs and left the 4th vacuum hose still connected to the fuel shut off valve.

Since I put the bike back together and rebalanced the carbs there has been an improvement in average fuel use. Another thing that has or I can't hear anymore is a knocking sound (on idle) that appeared to have from come from the clutch/oil pump area.

You're starting to give the impression you are having more fun pulling it to bits and cleaning it than riding it!!

Pulling things part is easy, however putting it back together right is entirely different.

Timing belt -------- I hadn't done anything like that before so I triple checked everything before I put the covers back on.

Sunday  was planned as S&M day @ Leumeah as poSTed laST week. Abe arrived at 9 am ish. we are going to change my timing belt and check the valve shims and replace if needed.
I'd already prepared Stranger on sat, once again removed all the plaSTic STripping STranger naked again. :fp removed the front wheel and mudguard, drained his radiator and removed it.  :thumb
1ST thing coffee... Dave then removed rocker covers and the timing belt cover on the left and we inspected the belt.  :eek wow..  :eek didnt expect it to lQQk like that... it almoST  lQQks brand new.. I wound the motor over by hand and checked the entire length, it lQQks just like the new one I brought laST week, its pliable and even has the criss cross pattern on the tooth side, all teeth STill rounded and it sits very snug in  the teeth on the sprocket.and remarkably clean free of dust. I had been told the belt had been changed after it left service, and I didnt think it had, Uno a sales pitch...  if it had been changed b4 STranger became mine it would be due again at 180,000 so I decided to leave it another 30k,

juST about now Ian aka single arrived on his metallic green ST1100, for the S&M. I had spoken with Ian during the week and he mentioned he wanted to sinc his carby's , so I :phone  Dave to ask him to bring his vacuum checking thingymajig.
Dave explained to me whilST he checked my valve shims, and we recorded the data for future reference. both intake and exhaust shims on all for cylinders were within spec  :thumb so no need to do any of them ATM and I have a benchmark for when they get checked at 180k when we finally change the timing belt. :thumbsup
we then cleaned the rocker covers and Dave using his orange stuff to seal the half moons put the covers back on. time for coffee.
:|||| I had taken some pics, or so I thought but they are missing on my phone.  :fp  :cuss photobucket is backing up pics  12 times on some photo's and seems to delete others? WTF..  :cuss
Next  Ian moved his STeed up and we removed the tank cowl and air filter box to do the carby sinc.

Under Dave's guidance I placed the vacuum gauge on 4th cyl to see what the preset reading was, juST under 4 on the dial so then I went round the other 3 carbies and adjuSTed them to 4, a few twiSTs on the throttle and re checked them all.  :thumbsup.
coffee time and  chat more about upcoming RTE's as Ian will be off his STeed for a few weeks after his eye operations.
and  Biggles I get to clean more of the front end of STranger before dressing him up in all his plaSTics again  :nahnah
