Dashboard Replacement
« on: November 25, 2014, 12:26:38 PM »
Hi Guys,

I am after some advice on Dashboards...

Unfortunately I was knocked off my bike last Monday by a stupid driver  :'(, thankfully no-one was hurt, including myself, or rather my wallet is going to be if I can't get reimbursed for the damage to my bike.

I will not go in to the details of the accident (unless you guys want me to), long story short, the impact to the wind-shield has pushed the Dashboard and cracked the main console.  I know this part isn't going to be easy to replace, and turn to you guys for assistance.

Would it be best to have a new one imported from the UK, obviously the most expensive option.  Or do any of you know where I might be able to get a used one from, maybe a scrapper bike.

Would this be a great opportunity to make some upgrades to my dashboard?

Value your opinion.

J

Hi Marcus,

I am fine, just confidence knocked a little bit, and terrified of the bloody corner where it happened and it being on my way to work there is not much of an alternative.  Just annoyed that it isn't going to be easy to get reimbursed for the repairs, plus if the Insurance company of the girl I hit decides they don't like my explanation then they will be coming after me.

Anyways it is a ST1100

I think an explanation is in order...

Two Lanes, the first lane splits into two as you go round a corner with the second lane staying as is with a solid white line all the way round, when you exit the corner there is three lanes.  I followed someone round in the first lane, and when it split I went for the middle lane, someone came across into that lane from the outside without indicating, clipped my right-side wing mirror, I slammed on the front brake to avoid hitting her, the bike skidded and fell over into the car sitting lane one.

From my perspective I was forced to avoid an accident in turn lost the bike into another persons car... it is all on video.

It is a little off topic of this question, but I think I would recommend all of you guys getting a cheapish camera to mount to the front of your bike, you will be amazed at what it captures.  I have already convinced one of my mates to get one for his, and he rides a Suzuki Sports Bike.

Anyways I am fine.

Any thoughts on the Dashboard?

J

That level of damage on an ST11 will most likely make it a write-off if the insurers pay up.
If you buy it back as a repairable-writeoff then you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a wrecker with a console.  Just need to keep the speedo with the lower mileage.     :grin

God I hope not... that means I have to buy the bike twice, I am unlikely to get enough to pay off the original finance for it.

I do want the steering to be checked it wasn't knocked out of alignment but the bike is ride-able

Sounds like you have a legit claim... fingers crossed.

What was your agreed value on the insurance

I think I put the value down as $8,000 but I don't think I would get that, they tend to offer market value, which is always less (a lot less).

Glad your ok, the rest is only money...

Just be aware that if you buy the bike back as a repairable write off you have to get it real real cheap, the last time I looked a viv inspection to get it back on the road cost near a 1000 dollars. Unfortunately that  means even minor damage on an ST1100 can mean its destined to be parted out  or scrapped. If you really want to keep the bike, try to avoid the insurance company writing it off.

Thanks Hendo,

The bike has just had an inspection too...

That is why I am hoping they will go after the other woman to repair the car I hit because she caused the accident anyways, and hopefully I can fix most of the stuff myself...  I am just about to replace the brake pads on it.

Your Policy will be Agreed Value or Market Value.  If it's "Agreed" then you've got $8000 minus your Excess.  Otherwise it's not so flash.

It would be handy if we had some idea on where you live.

Hey J, there is a couple being wrecked by Metro Motorcycle Spares http://www.motorcyclewreckers.com/wrecking-bikes/st1100-honda-st1100-1997 I called to get a radiator fan from them and the prices were reasonable.  Not sure if they have a dashboard to suit, but you could give them a go.

Hope it helps.
