Freight Train - Jamestown to Yongala.

I suppose this classifies as a ride report as yesterday we were coming back home on the bike after having lunch at the recently revamped Jamestown Café.

How long was that train ? We only have 41 coal wagons + 2 Locos which comes to 655 Metres, that would have to twice the length of ours  :grin

So, did you count the wagons?
Looks like it was only doing about 80 kph.

I'm not sure of the length and but close to double yours would be close.

Yours would small compared to the iron ore trains, one of which I counted about a 100 wagons plus three loco's up front

80 kph would be about right as it left Jamestown but then it's uphill most of the way until a few km before Peterborough. Most smaller trains ( about 100 kph) would almost beat us to the rail crossing we have to cross to get home as the rail distance is shorter. It's also possible he was running slower due to his last signal being amber (next could be red or amber) but more than likely just enough power up front to climb the steepest part.

Thank Allan. We are restricted with train length threw the Brisbane suburban area and the length  of the crossing loops in our area
Maybe one day that may change if they decide to spend some money  we are restricted to 80kph empty and 60kph when loaded

A lot of money has been spent in the Gunnedah basin we now pull 82x120 ton wagons with 3 locos 1350 m long, all Electronic controlled Pneumatic Brake. These things Rock 100k empty and 60 loaded. :like

I was a little out on my estimation of the length of those iron ore trains.

This back from in 2012 from here http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/freight/single-view/view/rio-tinto-to-introduce-driverless-trains-by-2014.html

At present the 1 500 km rail network operates around 300 trains a week, using a fleet of 148 locomotives and 9 400 wagons to move 630 000 tonnes of ore a day. Each train is typically 2ˇ4 km long, with a loaded weight of 30 000 tonnes and a top speed of 75 km/h.

Australian BHP Iron ore train, the longest train to ever run in the world, this train is officially in the guinness book of world records for the longest train.
The record was set on june 21, 2001 in western australia between newman and port headland, a distance of 275km (170 miles) and the train consisted of 682 loaded iron ore wagons and 8 GE AC6000 locomotives giving a gross weight of almost 100,000 tonnes and moved 82,262 tonnes of ore, the train was 7.353 km (4.568 miles) long.
BHP iron ore did this to test locotrol which is where locomotives are evenly placed along the length of the train.
The locotrol setup was 2 locos-166 wagons, 2 locos-168 wagons, 2 locos-168 wagons, 1 loco-180 wagons then the last locomotive on the back.
This very long train is controlled by only one driver.

I heard about that one Yorkie, I believe that the Gaurd was 10 min late to work, and still had time to make coffee and toast before getting into the Guard van. It was another 10 min before his van left the station, but the first loco was already arriving in Port Headland.
