Title: What route are you taking to National Rally 2013?
Post by: Streak on August 08, 2012, 10:15:03 PM
So your going to the National OzSTOC Rally 2013....

Have you started thinking about what Route your going to take to get there yet?

Are you going to travel direct?

Thinking about taking the scenic trip?

Have you considered OzSTOC Members who are not going to the Rally you could say hello too or even pinch a bed for the night from along the way?

Food for thought....

From Perth, its the direct route, unless you go via Darwin....

Here is a rough example of what I am thinking of doing at the moment:

National rally route for Streak

Day 1

Toowoomba to Tamworth 500km, Ozstoc member I can say hello to: STEVEO

Day 2

Tamworth to west wylong 610km, Ozstoc member I can say hello to: TONY

Day 3

West wylong to Mildura 550km, Ozstoc member I can say hello to: LONERIDER1

Day 4

Mildura to Middleton 430km, Arrive at National Rally 2013  :thumb

Total trip down 1,990km

At this stage I am taking a fairly relaxed view to my trip down as I will be covering some country I have never seen before, and I would like to take it in  :), and of course respective members wanting to say hello to me  :whistle

Post by: BigTed on August 08, 2012, 11:06:21 PM
Well, as I mentioned in another thread, I'm seriously considering it. Questions I asked myself, in this order were:
Q1. How far is it?    A. F**k - a long way!
Q2. How far am I prepared to go in any given day?   A. not more than 5-600km being my first long trip - thinking fatigue/safety here.
Q3. Hotel/motel or camping?   A. camping if possible (crap - I need a new tent!).
Q4. Where can I get 95RON fuel?     A. Probably everywhere now - but need to check (?).
Q5. What's interesting along the way to break up the trip?   A. Not much on the Nullarbor. Treat that as a "camping under the stars" experience.
Q6. Will I have enough annual leave in the new job by the time it comes around?   A. Maybe. Perhaps they'll let me take some more. Perhaps my wife will have had me "spend" it earlier.
Q7. What do I pack (no trailer)?   A. Very little.... time to start a list.

After the Q5, I made a route-plan..... here (https://maps.google.com.au/maps?saddr=Atwell,+Western+Australia&daddr=Kalgoorlie,+Western+Australia+to:Madura,+Western+Australia+to:Streaky+Bay,+South+Australia+to:Port+Lincoln,+South+Australia+to:Port+Augusta,+South+Australia+to:Middleton+Caravan+Park,+Victor+Harbor-Goolwa+Road,+Middleton,+South+Australia+to:Port+Augusta,+South+Australia+to:Ceduna,+South+Australia+to:Eyre+Hwy%2FNational+Highway+1+to:Esperance,+Western+Australia+to:Albany,+Western+Australia+to:Atwell,+Western+Australia&hl=en&sll=-33.12775,127.37135&sspn=35.213645,67.631836&geocode=FaWmFf4dQvnnBindh-1XaJcyKjFQPt81tfAEBQ%3BFXjWKv4dJ489Bynh5NTUt2dNKjEAFnokOPYABQ%3BFbQ_Gf4dVC-SBynZ9tP6VkjwKjGg2HkkOPYABA%3BFX6TC_4db-f_Bynxz-Ryv1GyKjHw145iVDYDBA%3BFdQ47v0dNgUZCCmF-ybCxMOrajEA_45iVDYDBQ%3BFWg0EP4dAhg2CCnPgQMO6uC8ajEQAI9iVDYDBQ%3BFbct4v0dBoNECCHXB_RMKWm4wClXpy1B2EqxajHXB_RMKWm4wA%3BFWg0EP4dAhg2CCnPgQMO6uC8ajEQAI9iVDYDBQ%3BFfLIFf4dMrP3BynH0QgMLZe2KjEA_Y5iVDYDBQ%3BFSDSGf4dmoagBw%3BFatY-_0dgPFDBym7Jx-aV0dbKjHQC3okOPYABQ%3BFTGU6f0dOccGBykpnTviJSc5KjGQDnokOPYABQ%3BFaWmFf4dQvnnBindh-1XaJcyKjFQPt81tfAEBQ&oq=Atwell,+Western+Australia&mra=ls&t=m&z=6) - what do you all think?  I think the marks (ie. overnighters) need a little adjustment to balance it out though.

Streak, your route is almost exactly what I as thinking. I see no point in rushing down there, better to see some of this beautiful country on the way instead of white-line fever. Are you camping or motel-ling?

I am not sure as yet, camping i think is a great option, but am also going to see who has a spare bed along the way.....

Just a bit of yard to camp on would be a bonus too if people don't mind (this would give access to a toilet and more people to chat to)

I'm planing to camp on the way but haven't thought about where to stop/set up along the way, if there are a few people camping we might be able to camp for the night at the same areas, even if people don't ride together (some might decide to stop to look at things others don't feel inclined to)

Just an idea :grin

I have a rough idea of how to avoid the Adelaide suburban area by having my route through the hills instead. Either that or I'll just go and play with the traffic anyway.

Guys, it might be worthwhile dividing this topic in to three sub-topics, North (Brisbane etc), East (Melbourne/Sydney Etc) and West (Perth etc), cause it's likely to get bigger than Ben Hur and very confusing otherwise! :crazy

Good idea there Wizz. Perhaps sub threads in line with the members attending from each state/territory list Streak put together.

I haven't planned anything concrete yet, but may do a coast run over a few days and call into Colac in Vic to visit mum.  Just means I have to do the Great Ocean Road and all those nasty twisting roads inland to Colac and back again.

I've done the Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast Adelaide ride a few times or more , doing the inland route and the Coast rout via the Great Ocean rd on the way to Adelaide and all is good. Some really good places to have a rest/sleep on the side of the road.
In fact at the rest area on the left between Batemans Bay and Narooma underneath the picnic table on the right of the toilet block on a beam their still may be a Watch and a Ring I left their January last year.
No reward is offered :rofl

My suggestion from Brisbane would be inland to Sydney. Princess Highway to Melbourne then Geelong and then the Great ocean rd and then the site

Click the member map: http://ozstoc.com/index.php?action=googlemap, (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?action=googlemap,) and see who and where is on the way to the rally, that you can, Stop and have lunch/coffee with along the way, or even Have a place to stay.

All you have to do is send them a message and say hello  :thumb

I'm thinking I might turn right out of my street, right onto Stuart Hwy and follow it all the way to Pt Augusta, then turn left and continue on into Adelaide......  :grin

Actually planning to do a SS1600 on day one, then continue on to complete a Centreline36.  With some luck, our new government may have abolished open road speed limits here by then and I'll be able to do it even easier.  :runyay :runyay :runyay

If we can get both our Annual Leave to fall in place our overnighter's will be Dubbo, Hay, Renmark, Sellicks Beach on the way down, travel home via Beachport, Port Campbell, Ocean Grove, Lakes Entrance, Yackandandah, Canberra, Newcastle and home. Haven't travelled GOR, Vic/NSW high country on a bike.

Having some smaller days to enjoy GOR & High country, about half our nights with family or friends.

Cheers

Perth to Middleton hugging the coast all the way with the exception of dirt roads and avoiding back tracking.
About 4,100 kms. Probably allow 7 days easy travelling

Hi Young One,

I may be traveling with Streak and Shiney, pending on a couple of things, but I'll keep your offer in mind, thanks.  But you may have already looked at this route (Balranald to Middleton via the Mallee Hwy)

They say it's a pretty nice Hwy and scenic.

The clocks change at  minus 45 minutes at Caiguna until the border (unofficial time zone) where they drop back another 1 hour and 45 minutes (our summertime)

That road from Clare to Gawler is a pain in the butt.......I avoid it, far to many 80k zones.

I suppose a lot of people are time poor for this outing but ................
From Qld south there are awesome roads compared with the highways down the middle..
Why follow a major highway when a detour will take you into the snowies then down through gippsland onto the Peninsula and a ferry across to Queenscliffe and then the Great Ocean Rd. Giving Melb and the traffic a big miss.
It's a trip not many will be able to take again for a while so why not takes in some side roads instead of major arterials.
OK it might cost an extra day or two but what the hell, when are you going to do it again.

Hi CK (any anyone doing big miles to/from Middleton) - here is a section dedicated to LD (Long Distance) riding (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=48.0) with some very useful tips about hydration, recognising early signs of fatigue, exercises you can do whilst in motion to prolong you "on-bike" time etc.

Written and researched by very reputable and experienced riders.

Also - OzSTOC offers it's valued Members (ALL of you) a forum to put up your planned ride, and contact details in case you need an extra hand out there. The mods all monitor this thread, and it may (unfortunately) be worth its weight in gold if you need assistance......

Plan is to take 6 days to get there. I plan to ride around the 400 k's a day staying in motels (I like my comforts)

I then have 6 dys to get to Yamba for the wedding, a planned stop at Noosa to see our Daughter, Son in law and Granddaughter and another planned stop at Gladstone to see 2 Sons who live there.  Motel all the way except for when I'm with our kids.

Return Route ......
As previously mentioned , i am returning via the G.O.R & ??? leaving middleton on monday  the 18th. Anyone else heading that way leaving monday ?
I know ST2UP is , but not sure of his planned departure date....
I have a flexible arrival date back in brisbane ( start work tuesday 26th) but have accomodation booked in middleton until monday morning .
Current thinking is avoiding mudborn via Queenscliffe ferry /sorrento & on from there ....

I'd love to go that route home. My next appointment??? Is in Yamba the next week end for my nephews wedding so I don't have to be in Yamba until Friday. So I thought I'd have a bit of a look aound.

I'm happy to go that way to have a look.

Hi Chris & Sabie  :hatwave
Chris, depending on your itinerary, we may be able to catch up somewhere on the way back :think1
I am fairly flexible regarding the route back , but would like to see canberra & maybe bathurst if possible .....Sabie maybe this will fit in with your plans ?
I am heading down with Streak & Shiney , and may be able to catch up with them along the way back seeing as they are yamba bound too....
With regards to accomodation , i have managed to obtain a 2 level ,3 bedroom cottage in middleton with the stipulation (with majorly reduced rate ) that it is just myself in residence. If anyone is in dire need of a bed , i can have a word with the owner & hopefully arrange something  :phone

Thanks Cerebral

I've got a bed where Chris is staying, hopefully in Thursday and out Monday.

But thanks for the offer..........unless of course there is a lot of snoring going on.... I'll be knocking at the door   |-i

Hi Cerebral, I tried to reply last night but my internet kept dropping out.
Anyway I am leaving Middleton on the Sunday, going on the ride to the Birdwood Museum and then
onto Millicent for the night, then then GOR to Euchuca for 2 nights and then to Brisbane via Dubbo?
You are most welcome to share if this suits.

Me and the missus is leaving Sat 9th sometime.
Head to Glen Innes, overnight.
Sunday head for tamworth turn right to Mullaley then left and into Mudgee. don't know where the overnighter is might be Bathurst.
Then Cowra, Young Cootamundra, Wagga and Albury.
Then down into the mudrun to visit daughter.
Out on Thurs and might go straight Middleton or overnight.
Sunday Sisters place at Kangarilla between Middleton and Adeliade.
Grampians and GOR on way back then across rip and into snowies and wherever.
Talk to you Qlders abt a route back while in middleton since I will have sent the pillion packing on a plane on the Monday.
Perhaps I better take a map on this run.

Hi Graham

I've downloaded a new app from RACQ. I've replotted my route which will take me through Hay on Wednesday.

Did you want to join up for the ride into middleton? I'm not sure what time I'd be at Hay at this stage but I sure we will be able to coordinate the same time over the week with daily contact.

Let me know and I'll factor that into my plan.

I don't have any camping gear as I'm moteling it along the way, so if your camping I won't be able to join you in that but I can ride with you guys from Hay...
