Title: Dammit!
Post by: Kev Murphy on July 02, 2016, 07:57:47 PM
Just had a phone call  a few minutes ago... seems the 'pea' sized chunk that was removed from my scalp a couple of weeks back has tested as malignant, and I have to have a larger piece of scalp removed tomorrow.
Wish me luck.

Sorry to hear your news Kev.   Best wishes for your second  surgery next week,  and my prayers are that the doctors will have the skill and wisdom to get it all this time, and that you will have some peace of mind.

Take care of yourself Kev. It pays to get these as early as possible.  Sounds like your doctors are on top of it.  To get some clean margins around the site your "pea" may turn into an apricot.  I hope all goes well

Thanks guys, all good... just home a short while ago. Surgeon removed a piece of scalp roughly the size of a 20 cent coin, but then found another melanoma on my back that I was unaware of. He excised a chunk about the size of a golf ball, and slapped 9 stitches in to close the hole. Have to go back Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for a burst of radiology, and 12 days yet until stitches come out.

Well, that was a bit of a marathon event? I was supposed to have a cat scan at 9.30, but there were 5 people in line ahead of me.
Finally got scan at 11.40, (about 10 minutes), and the radiology only took about 5 minutes at 11.55 -12 pm.
Can sit around at home now until Thursday morning for the next dose.

Thanks for well wishes everyone. Had final dose of radio therapy last Saturday, and all stitches will come out next Friday.
Have appointment with a surgeon to tackle umbilical hernia in two weeks, but that is only a relatively simple procedure, and will probably be home within two days of op.

Strange stuff, that radiation therapy.... five minutes worth, and it makes you feel as tho you have run a marathon while drunk, instead of having just walked down the hallway?  :o :o  (affects balance as well!) My buddy drove me home from the hospital, and I slept for several hours .

I had the umbilical hernia done a few years ago, in and out the same day. Just don't lift anything heavy for a few weeks after. All the best.

Home again after back and scalp patch threads removed, I can now pull on a shirt without it catching on stitches, and I don't have to wear a beanie under my helmet as padding anymore.  A further 11 days now, before next round of visits with doc/surgeon for tummy patch.

Had a quiet little ride around town today, all seems good, but the scalp has not yet closed over fully, still a bit weepy. Probably ok in another few days or so. Back is ok, no problems there, not that I can wear a backpack yet tho.

Best not to try and rush the recovery.  Too much too soon and you can delay things considerably.  Very one takes as long as it takes to heal,  the best a doctor can do is give a rough estimate for recovery

Kev, just found this thread .. Not on the old computer as much as I used to be....

Mate ... Welcome to the club, of course a membership you don't want to be a part of.... I haven't had radiation therapy for my cancer but 19 months of chemo with a session every fortnight, over 40 rounds of chemo and no end in sight, well, just no end until the end.

All the best mate, all I can say is keep a positive attitude no matter what the prognosis is, live your life as normally as you can ... Hopefully yours is curable and only a small hiccup in life's journey.

Thinking of you Kev, I'm not a religious man so positive thoughts sent your way....

Sabie

All 'patches' have now healed over, getting ready for the next repair in 3 weeks. I hope to get some more cruising time in good weather before I go to Hospital, as I will be grounded for a month after tummy fix.

The saga continues... What was that about running down a whole Chinese family, Denis?  :grin
Wednesday I had a pimple looking thing on my temple, gave it a squeeze before I went to bed.
Woke up yesterday with a large swelling... its an infected cyst. Painful sucker.
This morning, the swelling and redness has extended down to my cheek, I have restricted and blurred vision in my left eye, and its impossible to put my helmet on.
Rang the Doc this morning, and secured an appointment before lunch tomorrow. Probably the blade before tomorrow evening, followed by more antibiotics!

Hows this for a lump on the melon?

What a monumental far-cup!

Had two pre-op specialists appointments this morning, 10.30 and 10.45 ... I went early, 10.00 am.

They had the wrong medical file for both appts... had almost finished the paperwork for the first appt before they realised
that I was Kevin JOHN Murphy, born 4/11/47 .. not Kevin NORMAN Murphy, born 4/6/47?
... only when they checked that an ear nose and throat specialist does NOT do hernia surgery that the penny dropped.

I had to wait 15 minutes for the correct file to be sent from the Hospital... and then the hospital stuffed up and sent the WRONG file again!

ANOTHER 15 minutes passed, then a further 15 minutes to fill out the correct forms.

This put me a 3/4 hour late for the second appointment, which some brain-dead person in the office cancelled, because I wasn’t in the waiting room when they called.

They squeezed me in at 11.45, an hour late, and I have only just gotten home. Over two hours for two consecutive 15 minute appointments!

Oh, by the way... the specialist fee from my appointment a month ago?.. I have to attend his office  to pay the bill in full, and THEN claim back part fee from Medicare.   ... in HAMILTON, 90km up the highway!

They cannot accept payment here in Portland.  This is all directly due to Malcolm Turnips foul-up, since he changed billing procedures.

Starting to wonder if it is worth going to the operating theatre Tuesday. With their proven incompetence today, they will probably remove an arm, or a leg!

...And NOW of course, it’s MY FAULT that their daily appointments are all running late?

Maybe I should uproot, and move back to Qld, Sabie... anything would be better than the 'wannabees' who operate the system here.

Just found out that they charge $8 per day, or part thereof, for TV in the ward... it's not an option, and I don't even WATCH TV?

Damned if I am going to pay $16 for something that I don't even use?
... oh yeah.... no mobiles allowed, they have a bedside phone instead, but you have to pay upfront for access, a set fee per day, (or part thereof) plus timed local calls, but I didn't catch the rates.
What other hidden charges do they have? .. I wonder if they charge for meals and a glass of water? Do they have coin slots for access on the door of the toilets ?

Even the local vet offers better service.

I will NOT be staying overnight in the Hospital after the op, I will notify them of my decision on Monday.
I am a stubborn bastard when stirred, and they are pushing the wrong buttons.

Just retuned home after a visit to the optical specialist. Looks like my bike/car touring days are over because my eyesight is going downhill. I have cataracts in both eyes and I find that I cannot recognise faces of friends from across the road. Hard to read script on the computer screen, unless I magnify the screen. My Licence is now in limbo and I am currently forbidden to ride/drive. This kick in the teeth has all occurred over the past 6 months.
I now have to get assistance from 3rd parties to help with mundane things around home, or the other (non) option is to move into retirement accomodation.

Cataracts are operable, quick and easy, and done under a local anesthetic (well for me anyway), in and out of hospital in a day, a couple of days rest, a few more taking it easy and then back to driving and riding.  That was 11 and 12 years ago (about a year between eyes), I'm sure much progress has been made in recent years.  Made seeing objects in poor light much better.

Chin up Kev, there's light at the end of the tunnel - you just gotta see it (pun intended).

I agree, Lane had her lenses in her eyes replaced one at a time, less than a week recovery between them.  Needs much weaker glasses now (used to be coke bottle style).  Same surgery as cataracts.

:like Thanks, guys. The optico painted a far more grim picture, and it seems I was being stressed out for little reason.

I hope all goes well.  While waiting for the op though you could give umpiring footy a go, most of them are suffering from altered eyesight.   :Stirpot

Richo, I thought poor eyesight was a pre-requisite for that job?  :crackup

I would make a fantastic umpire. I know buggerall about the game, and could not name more than maybe 3 teams, and have no idea of team colours, or from which state the teams are from.

I am sorry Kev but with that extensive knowledge you would be ineligible for umpiring.  In order to to that job you have to have no idea at all

Hey Kev,

It sounds like we might suffer from some of the same conditions, eg. cataracts (as mentioned above), although mine were more advanced than yours, and old age, but you are more advanced from me on that one.

Hope you don't have the same hearing problem I have.  I have two types of deafness; one real, the other selective.  The selective one can be a problem, often I don't hear what I don't want to hear and that is bad news from the doctor.  I would get home from the GP or the cardio specialist, Helen would ask how things went, usually I hadn't listened well enough (to the Doc) to tell her anything useful.

Result is now Helen attends the GP or specialist if I'm attending on anything important, she hears everything the Docs have to say, she also know to ask a lot more questions that I would.

So if you have someone, preferably female, to attend some of your appointments with you ........... just me thinking out loud.

No hearing problems for me Michael, and I tend to steer clear of females if at all possible, lol.

Exactly the same, mine would ask how did it go and I would say "Howd what go" . She soon started following me to all appointments. That was good too, stopped me asking why am I here. Just a bit more of OCD . True story, drove her nuts when I had no answers... :grin :wht11

Mrs Glimt is from a medical background so she likes to ask questions too.  Often all I hear is a random number but to her it actually means something.

Hi Kev,

Get on that list and push as much as you can to get to the top of the list.  :angry-old-man-smiley-emoticon

As was said, you've paid your taxes & you've also served this country. Any Veteran's assistance you can get?

Hope to hear some good news from you.

Cheers

Ditto to this from me.

Also. Is there anything we can do to help get the bike ready to ride?

All good as far as bike goes, just need some time to put it together. It's stored a few blocks away from home, and it's too far for me to walk there.

All sorted with DVA, am on waiting list for cataracts to be seen to... went back to the dentist last week, but she said I am a slow healer and gums not ready for new teeth yet, has postponed fitting for another couple of months.
That steak I have been craving is still far away, will be 12 months since I have eaten one.  :||||
