Knowledged one's,
I just got new tyres for the bike and noticed that the arrow on (rear tyre) the slide collar No. 7 on diagram below is just outside the right arrow on the rim, as depicted on page 14-4 of www.magnamaniac.com (http://www.magnamaniac.com) . Tried to find what that all means, but I'm taking an uneducated guess and thinking that the rear wheel damper rubbers need replacing??? No doubt some of you have seen this before, if so, whats the cure.
Thanks
Dave

Looking at your diagram and at the enlarged section lower LH shows the correct installation of that plate should you at anytime replace the cush drive rubbers underneath. Arrow one is where the plate can be removed/replaced. Arrow two is the plate in it's operating position.
The pins on item 3 (drive spline) then locate in the holes in the cush drive. It pays to inspect the rubbers for cracks every so often and replace as required as they reduce the drive line shock torear wheel.
If those arrows are out of position I would play safe and check the rubbers and replace if needed.
-
The arrows locate the locking plate. It may be that someone has previously taken everything out and cleaned up/replaced things. A good idea to check the rubbers and alloy inserts if they feel a bit loose. If the rubbers wear, the alloy inserts also wear from moving around, and it is possible if bad enough that the alloy inserts will start wearing into the wheel. Easy enough to see the as rubber that locates the alloy inserts wears away, and the alloy inserts wear elongated.
Always best to replace the rubbers and alloy inserts as a set. Quite a bit of rubber dust can accumulate in there. Also use the right grease on the splines, and check the three o rings that keep the grease in/water out.
FYI, I have replaced the rubbers/alloy inserts once in 183,000kms, may be due again in another 50,000kms

Many thanks gentlemen, on my next days off I'll take the rear tyre off and have a good look, now I know what to look for.
If I order in the next few days I may get the parts from the USA in time for Middleton.
Thanks again
Dave

The rubbers on mine had gone to the extent that it caused the drive assembly to wear the rear wheel requiring replacement of the wheel.

Winston 66,
just noticed this write up,
Question, My 2003 St does not have the ABS. and it seems with the parts list illustration for the 2003, 2004 models to be a different set up.
Is this something for me to concern myself with ,? or is this specific to later models that have ABS.
Cheers ,

Hi Winston,
This applies to yours as well but the 1300 is slightly different to the 1100.
Look at 16-7 to 16-10 or rear wheel/suspension if your manual is different to the 2003 one. This section covers replacing wheel bearings and cush drive rubbers.

Abe,
How long did it take to get the parts you ordered, looks like I need new rubbers in mine.
-
I should do mine sometime this year.......will have a look at them next tyre change.
Wondering if bearings should be done as well.........they seem to be ok.

Another question ... can someone direct me to the third O-ring that gets mentioned. I've checked everything and even the parts list only mentions 2 o-rings.
-
Here it is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/54109647/Mike%20Martin's%20ST1100%20Maintenance%20Tips%20-%203rd%20O-ring.mht (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/54109647/Mike%20Martin's%20ST1100%20Maintenance%20Tips%20-%203rd%20O-ring.mht)
Not a silly question as it is not very obvious. Two of the orings are pretty standard sizes, in most o-ring kits. The bigger one might be available from somewhere, but I got a Honda one (which I have not fitted as yet)

I actually had a good look just after i posted that last message with a headlamp on and found it located inside the drive flange. I checked it and it looks fine as does the thick one on the driven flange. The thin one however looks 'flat' should it have a round profile or a sort of flat rectangular one?
-
The new one I have is round, but it does take on a flat shape from being in contact with the flange surface. If there is grease escaping from the spline area probably time to replace it. I have never replaced mine (as yet) and it is at 182K (but it may have been replaced before, but highly unlikely!) The part number i have for it is 91302-MA6-003, but I have not checked with a fastner specilaist to see if they might have generic o-rings that fit.

Thanks for the info Saaz. Oh well off to Allied Bearings tomorrow to see if they have an equivalent o-ring, then off to the Honda Shop to see if they have the cush rubbers and inserts, if not I guess i'll have to look O/S. The cush rubbers aren't completely stuffed but a couple of the inserts have come through and are rubbing the wheel.
-
The rubbing of the wheel is the bad bit. Best to replace them before other parts of the wheel start to wear. It may not be an immediate problem as the last ST11 I did the rubbers and inserts on was near 200K with the originals, and only some rubbing of the wheel. And those allot inserts had oval holes and a lot of movement.

It does seem odd since the bike has only 62000kms on it but three of the rubbers have torn/worn at the base which allows the inserts to rub against the inner surface of the wheel. I guess I'm a bit of a worrier but I am going to be doing several thousand kms in the next couple of months and I'd hate to have the rearr end stuff up somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. I'm putting new tyres on as well even though the ones on the bike have only done aabout 7000kms. I'll keep them in the shed and when the new ones are worn out get them refitted and wear them out on the ranges around here.

Sorry for the delay, had to work.
Final Drive O ring Part No. 91356MG9003 (size is 39.5 x 2.4mm) - Honda price $5.81
Rear Wheel O ring(around outside of bearing housing) Part No. 91302MA6003 (size is 61 x 2mm) - Honda price $8.29
Final Drive Flange O ring (fingers/spider) Part No. 91358MG9003 (size is 50.5 x 3.5mm). Honda had none so I cleaned and rotated.
Honda Moly 60 paste Part No. 087340001, 85grms - Honda $57.85 (will last a long time)
Hope that helps.
Cheers

as per my post 5th Feb, I had to replace the rear wheel because the drive assembly to wear the wheel by around 6mm on average, this with only 65k on the clock. I will be checking this every time the wheel is removed in future.
-
I think it was your post that prompted me to have a decent look. The wear in the wheel is minor but I'm glad I found it before it got too bad.
-
"O" rings = 15 in total = 5 tyre changes

Im going to try CBC Bearing here in Sydney.

Went to the local Honda shop today to order the cush rubbers, inserts and the big o-ring. All parts are available from Honda and should be here by Wednesday. The rubbers are a set for about $55 and the inserts are roughly $16 each. Dunno the price of the oring but it shouldn't be too much. Should have Goldie back on the road next weekend with the final drive sorted and new tyres, might even do a service.
-
Well, got a call from Cairns Honda today at 15:45, parts are here. Couldn't believe it ordered yesterday morning, here this arvo.
Final tally:
Rubber Dampers set of five - $53.40
Damper inserts 5 @ $16.30 ea - $81.50
O-Ring 61 x 2 - $7.65
Total cost - $142.55
I'm pretty happy with the total and very happy with the quick delivery.
Now I just have to get the whole thing back together.

Sounds not too bad at all. The bike may feel strange with the cush rubbers and inserts all tight :)

Honda can't supply the big thick o'ring that goes on the drive flange so I went to the bearing shop.. nope sorry that o-ring is an odd size and we can't supply.. so I just cleaned it and reused, it is in good condition.
Bike is till apart however with new bearings and seals either end, new cush rubbers, and a couple of new o-rings I hope to have it sorted by this weekend.
