Title: It's official! Here is your choice of new Honda Sports Tourers...
Post by: saaz on October 18, 2013, 12:24:45 PM
The latest AMCN has again raised rumours of a possible ST replacement using the ST13 engine for a platform a CTX1300.  Talk is that it will be influenced by the latest CTX700 Honda and take some ideas from that cut down Gold Wing.

But this seems to indicate that a V twin engine is more likely.  http://blog.motorcycle.com/2013/09/05/manufacturers/honda/leaked-document-lists-honda-ctx1300-cbr650f-cb650f-vfr800f-cb250f-and-updated-cbr250r/ (http://blog.motorcycle.com/2013/09/05/manufacturers/honda/leaked-document-lists-honda-ctx1300-cbr650f-cb650f-vfr800f-cb250f-and-updated-cbr250r/)

I hope it turns out better than it sounds!

Maybe it will look something like this

Could be that some will start looking at :-

Competitors For The Honda ST1300

• BMW K
• Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS
• Moto Guzzi Norge
• Yamaha FJR

Not for me.......not with that chain drive. I'd opt for 'wing if I was able to afford a new bike.

You forgot the best competitor, Kev.

I reckon the Triumph Trophy has to be considered.  The only thing I don't like is the single sided exhaust- it looks unbalanced.

After that, I'd look at the FJR well before the rest!

I totally agree that the Trophy looks like the "Best of the Rest".   However, it has no tip-over protection and thus a little drop will do lots of damage.

Maybe there are Oggy knobs that suit it (and ruin its clean lines).

I believe there are some protection bars you can fit to the Trophy.. R&G make them..not that I am looking that much...

Without getting off topic....my local Trumpy dealer was saying that the Trophy isn't selling too well in Oz.  He said there was talk that they were going to stop importing them.  Time will tell.

Cheers,

Could be, but I have had to wait for the next shipment until I can get one as they are all sold out.  It was never going to be  a big seller but am important addition to the range.  If they don't get any more then I will just stick the the ST11 until it dies some time, but who knows when??

I rode the Triumph Trophy while at the Ulysses AGM in Maryborough. Even though I liked the Trophy
I came home and bought a brand new ST1300.
Honda dropping the price on the ST1300 did help me make up my mind  :grin

There's an item on the CTX1300 in this weeks Aussie Motor Cycle mag.  They say the CTX1300 will borrow parts from the ST1300, "Our Japanese sources claim the bike will be based around a longitudinally-mounted V4 engine from the ST1300 tourer.  If this is the case expect a beast that's somewhere between a traditional and long-distance tourer"

If the want a long distance tourer, what's wrong with the ST1300?

At nearly $29000 I'm not surprised, I certainly would be having a good look at the competition before shelling out that much.. hell I'd look hard at a good second hand wing for that money.

I have tried all the competition (including the BMW1600 at 10 grand more) and if the Trophy was not around a GoldWing would be the one.  I did think about an ST1300 but unfortunately test rode the Trophy a few times....

I can approve the semi naked engine.
At least it will make oil changes quicker!
The 700 appears to have a fixed windscreen, as does the 1300.  Another boo-boo!

But the rest is still lamentable, even after seeing the movies starring its little brother.

One comment on a blog put it pretty well..cruiser rides won't want it, and Sports-Tourer riders won't want to ride it.  To be fair, it is trying to grow market segment that is just growing.  I hope they have a version with adjustable screen, tank large enough for decent range etc.

Honda is strongly targeting new riders with nearly all its latest product introductions. With the American motorcycle market shrinking, they need to create a new audience to sell products to in the future. The idea is that someone who starts on a Honda CBR300R may move up to a Honda CBR500R, then a Honda CBR600RR. This new CTX1300 provides the same level of progression to its cruiser range. You may start on a CTX700, buy a CTX1300 a few years later, then move up to a Honda Gold Wing F6B. A tiered product range makes it easy for riders to advance the size of their bike as their skill (and budget) increases.

Wot - like a 1/4 of a bike, half a bike and fill size bike kinda thing :fp

That might be fine for the cruiser market but it's a big jump from say a CB400 to an GL1800. At least the ST1300 filled the gap a little.

Two bits of gossip I picked up today. First the Postie bikes are being repainted red prior to delivery.

Second, but somewhat unconfirmed, it is believed that a replacement for the ST1300 is in the wind, it could possibly be a V6 with fly by wire technology and still about 1300cc. Time will tell. Apparently for what ever reason, Honda Australia refuses to confirm the rumour.

I think fly by wire throttle, integrated cruise and traction control etc etc should be a given these days.  Honda going to a 6 cylinder would be a hark back to their racing heritage, and the V configuration is something else Honda holds dear to their hearts.  A V5 like the race bikes would be good :)

I really hope some of this is true...its about time Honda lead innovation like they did with the ST1100 years ago.  But then I also wish Suzuki would enter the ST market with a Busa based shaft ST....

The CTX1300 is basically a bagger version of the ST1300 (hope that does not offend anyone!)  Hopefully Honda will offer the full version, similar to the Goldwing compared to the F6B.

Here's another angle from the UK perspective (Visordown website)

This is Honda’s new CTX1300, which looks a bit like the F6B Goldwing Bagger but with the ST1300 Pan European's engine.

The spy shots were taken during filming in the US of a promo video for the new model, which is expected to be launched next year.

The pictures show a ‘CTX’ badge on a panel and an engine that looks identical to the Pan’s 1260cc transverse mounted V4, which makes 117bhp.

It's not clear whether the CTX1300 will be sold in the UK. Honda already makes a CTX700 for the States, using the frame and 670cc parallel-twin engine from the NC700 series sold here, with optional automatic Dual Clutch Transmission.

When the half-faired CTX700 was launched in February, along with a naked CTX700N, Honda UK said it was "evaluating" whether to bring them here in 2014.

Bill Savino of Honda America said at the time: “These new models intriduced today are just the first in a whole new family of CTX products of various displacements and engine configurations that will be rolled out in the future."

The name refers to Comfort, Technology and eXperience, according to firm.

The CTX1300 also looks not altogether unlike the Honda DN-01, a twist-and-go cruiser produced from 2008 to 2010 which, at £10,000, failed to achieve many UK sales.

I think some of these writers need to get their terms right.

A transverse motor is when the motor is mounted east west as in a CB 750 or if a "V4" the same as the VFR1200.

Hopefully what Honda is doing is releasing what they expect to be a bigger selling model, then release the other variations.  I had a look the other day at the Goldwing and F6B side by side, and all the main parts are the same.  So hopefully the CTX1300 will also have an ST cousin based on the same platform at some stage.  But will it have a decent tank size, decent fuel range etc etc?  The basic ST13 based platform is a great place to start!

They probably think that after 10 years the ST1300 needs a facelift.  Maybe.
But I'd settle for a bit of electrickery- TC, CC a power outlet and a better seat would be enough for me.
Oh, and get the heat off the legs, please.
If you still want more, make the front suspension adjustable.

Sad days...

Anyways - it's only sad for 'brand faithfuls' as there are plenty of other manufacturers out there embracing this market.

The new VFR800 looks pretty good. It has been give an overall makeover for the better.  VFR1200 is a good if it is at the right price, but I can't see how it could be modified to be an ST without so many changes that it would be too expensive.

The 1200 certainly has some good tech advances.  However, as saaz suggests, it still only leaves the F6B and Goldwing as true Honda tourers.  If I didn't go to a 'Wing I'd have to go to a Fazer or Trumpy.
Down the track, the OzSTOC might have to be re-badged "OzTourer".

Some feel its looks are against it.  The integrated luggage is a Deauville throw-back and no electric screen was a serious omission.  I worry when they talk about "chrome accents".  That's not why we bought STs!

Make It Your Own
We'll have plenty of Honda Genuine Accessories available to give your CTX1300 its own look. There'll be a tall windscreen, heated grips, backrest with pad, 12V accessory socket, rear trunk (45L), LED foglight kit, plenty of chrome accents, and more!

Has anyone else ridden the VFR1200? Where the ST is on the touring side of sports-touring, the VFR is definitely on the sports side. I don't think I'd want to be on one for very long.

Yep. I saw the tall windscreen, Marcus.  Dandy.  But what about when I want the screen right down so I can be sporty in the twisties without windscreen distortion of my view.  Integral heated grips are fine- I use the ones I have about twice a year.  LED fog lights are good.  I use them the same time I use the heated grips.  I adjust my windscreen every week.

Good point... I guess we'll have to wait. As I can't find any images showing the "tall windscreen" and how integrated it will become.

It would be pretty cool if it would come out of here

The seat looks very comfortable, but the pillion has only been given a perch.  Pockey would be miffed.

As I said in the other CTX1300 thread, I like the exposed engine look, especially if it dissipates the heat more effectively than the ST13's fairing does.  More chrome to polish, but my Purple Polish would handle it.

I'd prefer the delux version out of the two.

Adds  Anti-Lock Braking System(ABS), self-canceling turn signals, audio package including Bluetooth connectivity, blacked-out styling elements for a distinctive look.

missing cruise control and decent sized tank (5.1 US gallons or 19.3 L) and DCT

weighs 724.2 lbs or just over 328kg and we thought the STs were heavy.........lol

About the club name ,we in the gpz900r owners club are now metamorphing into gpz900r and gtr1000 as the guys get older and less able to ride the sports bike for any time are now buying the gtr as their long distance tourer.
So i guess in time some amendment to the title will be required.

The protection the ST gives you from the elements is what attracted me to it in the fist place.

This is how they should have made the CTX1300

Take the front end section off it (I highlighted Green with awesome Photoshop skills :p )

And replace it with the modified front section form the Goldwing.

The rest they can leave, make the side panniers larger and the windscreen retractable chuck a reverse gear on it and bingo New model ST

IMO that look one million times better.

Six of the 15 "innovations" (disregarding integrated luggage) are already on the ST1300.  Only LED lights, sound system, self cancelling indicators, LED display and TC are really new.  We can do two of those for ourselves.
We lose 6 litres of fuel capacity and presumably, electric screen.
Nup.  Still not convinced to trade Ruby.

Re Windscreen NOT electric. Larger screen is option. Still no cruise control and from what I read it looses 10 litres of fuel capacity against the ST1300.
In my opinion it is more a cruiser than a sports tourers, I suppose reviews will draw this out.

I really think it is the UGLIEST bike apart from the f6b that I have ever seen. I personaly would not waste my money, if I need to replace my beaST it would be with a Goldwing maybe an FJR at a pinch. :rd13

My old 1978 Yamaha XS650 had self cancelling indicators.

I don't remember exactly, but you could sit at the lights with blinker on and when you went around the corner it switched off. Maybe a mercury switch or similar.

If the ST1300 isn't replaced with something equal to what it is now or better, then unfortunately the Yamaha, Kawasaki, or BMW would have to be a consideration when mine is due for replacement. I want the Full Fairing, Luggage, Electric Windscreen and large tank. My $0.02 worth.

You forgot the Triumph Trophy- worthy of consideration.  And none of them have got what we call a "large" tank.

Another contender may be the partially water cooled BMW RT1200. It has a 30 litre tank - better than the 1600.  I understand that the Trophy has a range of at least 500kms from its 26 litre tank in adverse conditions, and could manage 600 plus if there were not strong head winds.  That is with all the luggage on.

The ST1300 is still available in the US and the UK, the "Cheap" ST's were those left unsold in Australia. So if you want to buy a new ST you can probably get one out of the US, plus shipping, plus GST, plus plus plus.

So if you want a new one bad enough and have the readies you can get one.

Also, I had a 1982 Yamaha XZ550 I bought brand new in 1983 and it had self cancelling blinkers.

The Trophy has a 26 litre tank, but the range from it is in ST country - from 550kms to over 650 depending on the winds.

They operated on both time combined with a speed sensor.   There was a sensor built into the speedo face, so that if speed was under a certain value, the indicator would keep running on a longer time basis (if stopped at lights or an intersection), and over that speed it worked on a longer set time.  Simple, elegant and worked a treat.

Just noticed in pic #2- is that a Police helmet?
Obviously- he's moonlighting when off-duty as a new bike test rider!

Another thing that I just noticed: the foot position is so far forward it could only be classed as a cruiser.
Any tourer worth his salt will tell you, while the forward position is an important relief from upright, it won't do the distance on its own.

Whereas the F6B was a "Bagger" the F6C is supposed to be the new "Valkyrie".

Nup.  Don't think so.

Honda certainly seem to have lost the plot.  They have copied the style of the failed DN01 with the CTX's and F6's, and the VFR1200 was a dud as well.  I wonder who does their research, or if they even talk to their customers.  :well

I Googled the CTX1300.  Shit! if that is what Honda think will replace the ST1300, they have another thing coming.  The engine may be the same cc, but the bike is definitely nothing near a suitable replacement.  Which, in my opinion, a replacement for an old model should be an improvement.  The CTX is a total piece of crap in my view.  Looks like there will not be a ST1300 on the radar in the future for me.   :butt to Honda, you have lost the plot.

Could be that some will start looking at :-

Competitors For The Honda ST1300

• BMW K
• Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS
• Moto Guzzi Norge
• Yamaha FJR

Im using an FJR for work now that Honda wasn't supplying STs. Nice bike and handles really well but I don't know that it will have the endurance the Honda has proven to have. Not a fan of the FJRs lack of front wind protection, the screen tends to suck all the weather in around it so when it is raining you get soaked. Never had that problem with the ST screen.

"The Pan makes 118hp at 8,000rpm and 86lbft at 6,500rpm. For the CTX1300, Honda has detuned the engine to 84hp at 6,000rpm and 78lbft at 4,500.  If the idea of a bagger with a V-four engine has appeal, it must be lessened by the loss of 34hp and 2,000rpm."

I thought this may have been a nice replacement to the ST (not that its going to happen anytime soon!), but not with specs like this!!!!!

I think it should be renamed the Honda 'Less'.
It has less power/torque.
Less fuel capacity.
Less suspension travel.
Less luggage space.
Less weather protection.
Less glovebox space.
Less etc.  BUT, it does have more weight!

Leave this for the Yanks who think this is how a bike should look, and bring back the ST.

551 km on the clock!
Didn't take someone long to get sick of it!

Maybe a Demo, but the ad usually says so if it is.  And 551 is a litle high for a demo bike that's only been around a short while.

I still get flashbacks to the monsters in "Alien" when I look at the front cowl.     :eek

Good find, that one, Sab.

I could ride one of these around just for the show!  I'd rather be transmitting "look at me" with style rather than 130db of engine noise like one manufacturer I won't name.

It's only got a scooter engine, but the styling is exceptional.  I'd have to try that seat back thingy,  it's not the best part of the bike, but might be comfortable.

And 25 colour choices for the LED display!!  Honda has gone from pathetic to insane over-kill.

I had a look through the Australian Motorcyclist test. One comment struck me - even though retuned for lower down power, it was commented that it has less midrange than the ST1300. Sort of defeats the purpose.  I can just see ST1300 owners swapping parts from the CTX so that the power is less...

I agree with Brock. The thing can't seem to be able to decide whether its a cruiser, tourer, bagger or just plain show off. Although I can't imagine anyone wanting to brag about having one.

Well I think the guy who set it up needs to be congratulated, it's not easy making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Although he didn't quite get the silk purse he gave it a good shot, after all he didn't have much to work with from the start, just a good engine really.

He's made the best of an awful thing..   :like ish

With you on that, although I think with and Electric Screen it would look even better.  :grin

Still... how annoying spending all that money and still have to carry your helmet around because it won't fit in the side panniers, unlike the ST1300. (not everyone would buy on with a top box)

I'Ve read, heard in conversation with a number of ST owners re farkling their STeed with .... Bar risers..more comfortable then OEM seats. So from what I see in these photos the CTX 1300 has the ST powerhouse plus a flatter seat and bars that are more touring orientated.....so maybe worth a test ride before disregarding it as an option to the next best thing.

And from the reviews I've read it may have the 'powerhouse ' of a STeed but it does not deliver the power expected or requierd.

The shape
the look
the power .... or lack thereof
the loss of the sports aspect

nup nup nopey nope
