Streaks Trailer Project.
Well after doing much investigating and sleuthing, i have purchased a second hand trailer that needs a little bit of love and attention, so here is where i am up to so far:
Here is the trailer before i started, it has two storage boxes at the rear, and the front is a built in Esky.
It has some flex in the trailer, so i started by removing all the carpet from the inside to invesdigate how it was mounted to the frame.
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/2_zpseeb2ec60.jpg)(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/3_zps5510c315.jpg)(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/4_zpsb7396009.jpg)
I discovered that it was only teck screwed from the alloy to the frame, and over time has started to crack out
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/6_zpsa240e1c8.jpg)(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/7_zps9a5cb3b9.jpg)
I also removed the metal mudguards as the weight of them being only bolted again to the alloy box had started to break away
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/5_zps6246d94b.jpg)
The Spring in the Drawbar was long longer working, so it was off with it, and the jockey wheel was on the way out as well.
So First things first was to remove the box from the frame, and to put a new draw-bar on the frame
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/9_zpsb2bc982e.jpg)
Then we welded the Jockey wheel bracket on rather than some small bolts so it was more stable, and also moved it back a bit from the draw bar
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/11_zpsb20fa548.jpg)
We flipped the frame over and re-enforced some of the hi stress areas so that it was stronger than ever!
Then we set about bolting the box properly to the frame, we used 3mm thick x 50mm wide plate, and made U shaped brackets out of them, we pop riveted them to the sides, and used 1/4 inch bolts to secure it to the frame.
if you also look top right of the photo below i have added a 12V point as well so that we can charge anything along the way.
So here is where I am up to:
Jobs still to complete:
Plastic Guards (i am waiting to arrive)
Kill Rust the Frame
strip back and paint the box
Re-Wire the Box to the bike with the 12V point.
Put rubber matting in the floor
put marine carpet around the sides to keep out heat, and help protect anything we are carrying.
So it is coming along really well! will update when i have done more

Looks great Streak. :thumb
Now to work where the BBQ is going to fit for the OzSTOC RTE BBQ :grin

Looks like you've turned a dodgy built into a solid trailer. I'm guessing black... :thumbsup

At the moment the plan is black, and then doing a middle wrap of 50mm reflective orange tape similar to the Mining vehicles to break it up and make it really visible

Ah. Then, like a mining vehicle, it will have a 4 metre mast and flag so the semi-trailer drivers can see you!

Ha ha nice one, No i am just going to keep it nice and simple, i think it is going to look very neat and tidy once we are done :thumb

Ooor you could have it custom painted with 'OzSToc ' same as the website header :think1

Nice project, Streak. I like the trailer. I want to build one in the not too distant future.
I think that the Ozstoc colour theme might go well on yours. Mostly black but with the orangey stripe (reflective.. why not?) and maybe some thin pinstriping either side of the stripe. If it's in the budget then LED lighting is nice. You don't have to stick with the bulky combination units but can use the thinner separate leds.. just an idea and requires more work. It wouldn't hurt to use the marine carpet on the floor as well. I put that as the floor in my camper trailer and it holds up well and looks good.
The roofing screws used in the construction of the sheetmetal on the body don't do much for me, and would not have helped with the cracking. I prefer s.s bolts and nuts and washers if you can get away with it. If you can get your hands on some wider flat washers. There's obviously some movement there for the sheetmetal to crack. Sometimes some clever use of a tube of silicone can help. Just some ideas if you can use them.
Edit: I had a second look: there is a fair amount of cracking in the sheetmetal isn't there? It would pay to spend some time on this. Unfortunately, it looks to be a result of it's design. You might be able to create just some framework inside to stiffen it up a bit. Selective use of a tube of polyurethane (?) to sandwich panels in hidden places. It wouldn't hurt to laminate where the bolts go through (add a small sheet of sheetmetal as a washer under the bolts washer, using the polyurethane as a glue). Once covered with the marine carpet it will still come up alright. It's not going to be easy welding up sheetmetal (well it wouldn't be for me anyway!). Again, just throwing ideas at you.
Edit 2: I see that you have added a new wind-up jockey wheel tot he trailer. These are reasonable weighty considering their purpose. If it won't be used as a camper trailer (you wont be sleeping on it) then there's not a lot of point having a wind up jockey wheel. Many trailers use a swing over/ slide down leg to support the trailer, and that would take some unnecessary weight off the bikes towbar. You could leave the jocket wheels bracket there and just add a simple leg setup. Then see what suits you.

Agreed with the LED Lighting, I have looked at it, but alot of it has to to with budget as well :thumb

the Roofing screws have gone in the Bin, I have added 50mm U Shaped Brackets that bolt through (using 1/4 inch bolts) and onto the Frame, I have nice big washers with spring washers to go on as well, the photos are just where i am up to at the moment, i have to pull it all apart again as i have to paint everything yet :thumbsup

I am just planning on having it so it is easy to move it about, the jockey wheel comes off it can just go into the trailer.
I appreciate everyone's advice to, as this is my first trailer so am trying to do all the right things :runyay

Great project you have going there. What did you pay for the trailer in it's rather tired condition? Keep us posted, and perhaps advise of the all up weight once you've finished it off.

I paid about $600 for it (there was a bit of Bartering and trade going on as well as money).
I am just working out the best way to strip all the paint off the box, it has a hammer finish on it, and i think i am best starting from scratch.
-
Nice work mate.....looking forward to the next instalment :thumbsup
-
Great project and should look a treat when finished. For the record can you tell all what size material for the frame and overall sizes etc. Good for future reference.
:wht11

Ohh how I could fill a trailer whilst travelling around stopping at all the shoe shops. :nahnah
Pockey :grin

Always travel in a group where there are some trailers. Then there is no such thing as "..but Pockey, we don't have the space to buy anything..." :blk13

Well after a quick sand and clean up, frame has been primed, and given two good coats of satin black kill rust, and it has come up a treat!

So it is all back together and put back in the shed, and now it Is to work on the box itself, I have started stripping the paint off, I have used a normal paint stripper and 50mm scrapper and it is all coming off nicely

Am still deciding if I am going to paint it myself or get it powder coated (depending on cost) :thumb

keep up the good werk :thumb

Looks like it coming along nicely :thumbsup :thumbs :clap

This is getting interesting

Evening all, well after a long hard look and a conversation with a few people about trailers and the like, I want to make my own box to go on the frame I have, as the frame is excellent, but the current box, it not very well designed for the frame, and I believe will cause me more issues down the track.
So....
I have the dimensions of 1280 long and 780 wide to work with on the frame, what would be a good option for building out of? Marine Ply? And what are thoughts on size and shape, just after suggestions so I can have a look and see what will work
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/39ed242b08606d0d24089c2d6093f4f3_zps3dc958e3.jpg)
-
Have a look at the bandicoot trailers, that shape may suit, and would be fairly easy to make in marine ply, later you could replace it with an ally box.
-
:dred11
Streak I see in the pics you have a rigid ball hitch :eek :-((( , I hope your going to get a swivel hitch :thumb

Does it really make much difference? I have seen many bikes with the rigid, and also the swivel
-
A 19mm sheet of marine ply 2400x1200 would weight just under 40 kg........just as a guide for your consideration :think1
What about using a car roof pod ?? Lots of sizes available, waterproof(ish) and light weight :think1

A friend of mine had her trailer flip on the Southern Cross Run when she clipped a roo, the bike stayed upright but the classic trailer dragged along on it's roof until she could pull up. If she hadn't had a swivel trailer hitch she may well have not survived the incident. I have a swivel hitch on my trailer and would never consider fitting a fixed hitch. Just my 2 cents worth.
-
:dred11
STreak, next weekend I'll swap my swivel for the rigid 1 that came with my trailer and do a few k's. That way I can give an honeST personal experience.
:think1 :grin the way I ride towing, (ask ST George :eek ) if I had a rigid hitch I wouldn't be able to lean as much :grin before beginning to lift the trailer, there is limited pivoting(?) with a rigid hitch opposed to a swivel, if that makes sense. But I will try it out and report back. :thumbsup good reason for a ride to scuff new PR3 buying this week, havent ridden since Ballarat. :well
juST read Bikebear's post ++ while typing and I have also seen the same happen... a rigid hitch would pull the back wheel up with it as it went over :eek.... scary
-
Interesting, any tips to where to get a swivel hitch from?
-
There is one on ebay that says it is suitable and approved for road use, $96 with $12 postage.

Looks very similar to the one on my trailer johnnyYTED... My mate has one that is similar to the Treg hitch but is smaller to suit a bike. I dunno if it was professionally made or he had it made by someone, I do know he has had it for quite a while.

after a little thought I remembered riding up to Bundaberg to a small factory unit where a guy was making them, cant for the life of me think of his name,,, maybe a ulysses member from S E Qld might know as it was prolly one who told me.. Gympie branch..I was with.

Streak,
Have you considered a fiberglass shell.
There is a guy on the Cunningham Hwy at Mutdapilly that does fibre glassing. From time to time he has motorcycle trailers out the front.
Paul Serg & Sons.
Search of white pages gives Mobile Service 4454 Cunningham Hwy, Mutdapilly

Here is the classic industries hitch . . . I have a Classic trailer and can vouch for their hitches flexibility . . . Dropped the bike at no speed and trailer stayed upright and no damage to bike or trailer.
http://www.classicind.com.au/Parts/ (http://www.classicind.com.au/Parts/)
I have seen these hitches at my local trailer/caravan dealers and I think they were cheaper than the Classic price.
-
Here is the one on my trailer it is the most common & is readily available at most trailer parts places
(http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i379/scarp57/100_3122.jpg)
They are available From Martins Trailer Parts:

The classic hitches are very expensive, at $250, when the other link above is $96
-
You could use a car roof top box as the trailer box (like this one) They look really neat & tidy
I've seen a few of these done & was going to build one myself till I saw the trailer I now have (was too cheap to knock back)

The Classic hitches are fully 360 degree swivel hitches the one in the link isn't, however Mr Classic is not known for his cheap or reasonable prices and I am sure you can get the same hitch at half the Classic price elswhere.
-
Thanks guys!
I am definatly going to get the 360 degree hitch,
I have looked with the pod, it is not versatile enough in my mind, my storeman who works for me can build anything, so he has his design hat on coming up with an idea or two for me, I am basically thinking of a box with a removable insert in it, with a smaller box in front for odds and sods, still leaving enough room for an esky to bolt on.
Dimensions I am working with are 1200mm long, 790mm wide.
I was thinking main box 1050mm long, 790mm wide, second box 150mm long 790mm wide (all approximate of course, many variables to work with)
Excuse my picture I am using draw on my iPad
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/7a659de446f3f0ec9d9a68f19bfb9124_zpsb83a86e8.jpg)
Gas struts on the lid, rubber mat on the floor with marine carpet around the walls and roof would protect everything nicely
I am after some more thoughts:
what to do the for the indicator/brake/tail light setup on the back, what has other people done? I have seen you can buy a pre built unit for a boat trailer somewhere?
Height of box? I was thinking 400mm would plenty, but I am happy to what other thoughts....clean ones...
-
:dred11
STreak I would go more this shape to reduce wind drag, I have a smaller box I mount on my drawbar also,,
also repco or supercheap used to have a basic trailer kit for lights :think1 LED lQQk good..

Streak, Johnny's is a good start, I would add 5 or 10 litre jerry can holders on the sides above the mudguards -for water or petrol . . . Handy if you travel around OZ or for outback camping . . . Esky or fridge platform on the front is good too. Length and width might depend on size of equipment you may wish to carry . . . Like tent, ezy up gazebo, tables (I started with aluminium rollup table but now have solid fold-in-half table) awning poles etc etc
-
Definitely go for LED lights, no hassles with bulbs etc. and they are BRIGHT....

I am looking at all my options :thumb everything you and Johnny has said is great :thumbs
The trailer is mainly for Teela and I tripping around, and also I'm preparing for the trip to WA in 2016, hence why I am wanting any and all opinions....
I do like the water and fuel containers ideas though good food for thought
-
thought this might help everyone, i took a photo and added dimensions to it, its only rough with a quick run over with a tape, the missing 200 odd mm is the top measurement to the tow ball
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/8399b480-ba20-4a01-ae0e-26132471b185_zpsa1e5094b.jpg)
-
Those length measurements dont add up, with a total length of 1850mm, and lengths of 1200 and 420mm, you are missing 230mm some where. Unless the legth of the chassis to towball is 1850..
-
yep that's why i said only rough, i didn't take the top measurement along far enough.... :thumbsup

ok so back to the 360 degree hitches, can i use something like this? the holes are already drilled in the frame for it, and would be a simple fit

There was a link to a lighter swivel hitch posted here some where, cost about $100 I think. If I find it I will post a link.

It dosnt it's a weld on......... :grin

Yep, it bolts on with electric glue....
Plan B:- Weld it to a plate that you can bolt on. Personally, I would weld it on..
-
Looks like a bolt hole on the base plate just behind the ball
-
Cant use those holes, as the the mount is at the other end.
-
:dred11
:think1 mayB that hole is for a safety chain,,, :think1 :fp mayB not

Well it Is in the right park, I have been talking to one my my customers who has an engineering business, he is not a fan of eBay items like this, he is going to cost me up making me one
-
These hitches are fine streak, I have three of them. :nahnah

do you want to part with one :)

Woo Hoo my cargo Pod was delivered today, I had been searching for one that was 1200mm long, and 790mm wide, I have not been able to find a second hand one the right size or under $300, hence why I was looking for toolboxes and the like
one of my customers sells the Cargo Pods popped into the shop, and informed me that he had this brand new Rhino Pod that he could not sell as it was to small, it is 1200mm by 800mm (Volume Roughly 340L)
Cost: The princely sum of $100 cash!
It is a perfect fit!
Fully lockable, it is going to bolt on nicely

Streak, It seems that since you brought that white ST 1300 everything's just falling into place for you, :runyay but I have to ask, are you going to paint the cargo pod white or black, or just leave it as is? :grin

Plan is a simple one, frame will be black , esky, pod and mudguards grey, job done :thumb
I think it is going to look very neat and tidy once completed. Plan is to tow it to Yeppoon overnighter for its first proper test run

Grey should go very well with white and black.............Yeppoon, I love that place, I very nearly moved up there about 27 years ago, I made plans that didn't quite come off, it should be a very nice ride with the trailer behind! :grin

Interesting, any tips to where to get a swivel hitch from?
I went the uniglide hitch
had to do a small mod to the hitch and tow bar plate but the connection on the bike is solid and everything else moves behind it
