Title: My Recovery Trailer
Post by: Yorkie on November 24, 2014, 06:52:13 PM
A few minor things to be done, mesh down both sides, enclose the draw bar for storage of tie down straps.

Nice wide ramp.
Will you ride bikes on while someone videos it?  There are some outstanding precedents on Youtube.

Very nice Brian. Will you have it registered in time to bring it to Breakfast on the 13th as a bring show item?

I have a few trailers Glen, just swap plates around, it will take an ST if needed, I used the XV as a test because being 75kg lighter it would have been easier to pick up if any problems had occurred. I have had the ST on the trolley, strapped through the lower tree and it is quite stable.

Great trailer Brian. The Harley has not broken down yet. Been soaked on the ride through the wheatbelt about 4 weeks ago.

Don't quite understand why this is on the ST Forum . . . Our ST's don't breakdown . . . You ride them not tow them . . 😘

unless you run out of fuel!!!!     :fp

and then you refuel them from the tin you're carrying.  No need to tow.      :grin
Even with a RH pannier nearly full of compressor, bike cover etc there's room for a one litre tin that will take you at least 15 km closer to a bowser.

I have never run out of fuel on any of my motorbikes . . . I think it's called planning, management awareness  . . . Mind you I have used my 7 x 4 box trailer to transport other peoples bikes . . Never had any problems loading, unloading or in transit . . .

Yes you have done well with all that engineering and welding . . . Maybe you can rent it out for members in need? I think I have seen something similar for loading a bike onto trailers or onto a flatbed ute . . . From memory it wasn't cheap . .

It will be available to any member who wants to borrow it, also for 2016 Rally if needed.

Its a great trailer, Yorkie.
I'd like two mods for the one you build for me.
1. electric winch
2. slightly narrower ramps to fit two bikes side by side on the trailer.
I'm not in a hurry but before Christmas would be good.

Wombat gave me an electric winch, however it wasn't able to pay out so the option was to let the bike free fall, I was not happy with that option so went for the handraulic model, more control.

Yorkie, that's an incredible recovery trailer idea. If it hasn't been built elsewhere, have you considered taking out a patent on the idea?

Haven't given it a thought although it did take a month or 2 before I could work out how it would finish, I only have 1 small change I would make if I were to do it again and I am not sure it would make much difference.
Design was all in the head, with some discussion with Wombat.

I've only come across one other similar set-up and that's a British design http://www.trealestrailers.co.uk/motorcycle_trailers.php (http://www.trealestrailers.co.uk/motorcycle_trailers.php)
but even still it might be worth looking into.
I know patents can be pricey, but if you're the only one with a recovery system like it here in Australia, it could well be a money spinner for you.
