Driveline clunk
« on: July 30, 2019, 08:26:38 PM »
These arrived in the post today from Partzilla ( thanks Alan👍) in less than 3 weeks. Total including post was $283AU. Have been feeling and hearing a distinct clunk when engaging clutch and when accelerating and de accelerating. With the bike on centre stand and in 1st gear wheel has about 2” free travel. With a longish ride coming up in a couple of months I have decided to change out the U joint rather than take chances. Will pull off the swingarm this weekend , will know then if this was needed or just a pointless exercise 😳

When my "U" joint packed up, I felt it as a buzz through the footpegs, which changed as the bike went over undulations.   See  http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=10046.25

Thanks for that Pete. I did read through your post on the subject earlier, hence the reason for my concern, don’t like the prospect of a blown drive line in the middle of nowhere  :eek. I haven’t experienced the buzz you describe but the clunk doesn’t seem normal nor the excessive free travel.

Took the bike for a spin today  after changing out the U Joint and no more “clunk” :like. However I don’t think the clunk was due to the old U joint as that appears to be in perfect condition with no play whatsoever. On dismantling the swingarm I found the output shaft and drive shaft splines bone dry (u joint end). This I’m assuming was the cause of the clunk noise I was hearing. I measured the free travel at the rear wheel (52mm) before dismantling and that remains the same after changing the U joint. It wasn’t a useless exercise altogether however because there was a slight oil leak at output shaft and swingarm bearings needed lubricating. Seals replaced, joints lubricated and bike running smoothly without clunk  :like

How hard was the job?
Always a pity if there aren't photos and description, but I fully uinderstand not everyone can put together a "How To" in the heat of the job.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Not a very hard job, you will need a special tool to remove the pivot bolts or make one like I did . I took my time doing this in the evenings after work , but total time wouldn’t be more than 3 hrs. Hardest bit was trying to locate the boot seal on the swingarm :H. I’ll post a detailed “How To” as best I can when I figure how to post video/pics here👍
