Timing Belt

 :hatwave   Hi all,
                              My 1990 St1100 is coming up for a Timing Belt change.  there is one on Ebay for $48 but it says 1991 to 2002.
                Does anyone know if this is OK for my 1990 ST.  It is a Gates OEM brand.

The same timing belt is used in all ST1100s. Many have used the Gates belts, and some suspect Gates makes the belts for Honda. makes it a cheap belt chnage  :thumb

                                       Thanks for your reply!   If there are suspect Gates belts maybe i should use genuine, it might be a case of you only
          get what you pay for!  Honda dealers tell me they are about $220

Gates make many automotive belts so are a safe bet.  Honda probably don't make many of their own bits as they include a manufacturer code in their part numbers.

                                          I am new to motorbiking as you may have read in the forums. I see you live in Canberra but i just wondered if
    you knew anyone closer to me which is Blackalls Park near Newcastle that could do the job for me at a reasonable price.

The Gates belts arent suspect, its that people suspect that Honda belts are made by Gates....

P.S.

If you have a look at the meber map, it will point out if there are any members near you

Put a Gates in my 1100, think it was about $65......that's awhile ago now though  :beer

Just replaced mine with a Gates. Shouldn't have waited till it broke though.  :grin

Perhaps so, tho it does make it easier to get it off (but you cant see how it went on)

Ron, mine had 216XXX on it. The recommended change period is abt 150,000 kms. From my experience, I would consider doing it sooner rather than later. It is not a difficult job if you follow the manual. Just a case of lining up the marks properly. Eeeeaasy.  :grin

Just did mine at 151k, bit fiddly took me about 5 hours to pull all the plastics off and do the belt. Now I have to put the jig saw back together tomorrow, fun job :wink1. You really need to follow the manual and turn the motor over 4 times as stated, I did this and found the belt had come off the bottom pulley. Bugger had to start again.

just put on my third gates. always replaced soon after 140k no problems
