Idiot????
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:56:36 AM »
quote from todays SMH
The Honda ST1100, for instance, was like one of the banks: big, reliable, will go forever, but has no character and real bikers don't like them. They serve a purpose, they get you there, but beyond the fact you're out on the road with everyone else, it's not much fun and you can get more excitement riding something else.

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion, and of course if everyone thought the same then we'd all ride the same bike!

To be honest I don't totally disagree.  I have to say, I'm currently on my first proper ride on the ST and it is growing on me, but until yesterday my sentiments would have been similar.  Now I 'get it' a bit more, but I still find it a fairly bland bike, nowhere near as much 'character' as BMW's offer, but none of the reliability issues they offer either.  I bought the ST to use as a vehicle primarily, so it serves my purpose.  If BMW's didn't break so often I would have bought one of those.

Real bikers don't like them?  Good.  To me there is a difference between a 'biker' and a 'motorcyclist'.  I think of myself as the latter.

He raves about the 900RR - I had one of these, an extremely competent sports motorcycle but compare it to any KTM 990 and it's also bland characterless.  I prefer the ST1100 to the FireBlade, it suits my requirements better.

I believe you can have fun on any bike.  But, I have enjoyed the same stretch of road more on one bike than on another.  I found some nice corners yesterday and enjoyed them as much on the ST as I would have on the FireBlade - probably more as I was not crunched up in some ridiculous riding position.  800kms has never been so easy.  I would have enjoyed the ride more had I been on a BMW boxer or a KTM 990 Adv.

Personally, I couldn't care less what anyone thinks about the ST1100.  The bike is the same regardless of what anyone writes.  If someone likes it, great.  If not, then that's fine too.  I certainly wouldn't consider someone to be a dickhead just because they find an ST1100 to be characterless and unexciting!  It's just their opinion which they are entitled to.

Mate, he's a bloody stock-broker for God's sake! Why would you possibly put any faith in any syllable that comes out of his mouth?? His rant simply goes to prove that he has absolutely no clue what owning a bike is all about! Dismiss him from your mind forever as a retard and some-one to be pitied rather than railed against.

"I don't own a bike at the moment, but Emma's beginning to come around and we're thinking about it." Pussy!

Ok now small deep breath.....

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, his seems to read like he has not really spent time learning and enjoys a particular bike.

So take the article read it, ask yourself is it really a constructive opinion....

He throws quite a lot of mud at a few types of bike, I am considering sending him an invite to CEO along to one of our RTE's so h can see whs the ST1100 is about  :thumb

p.s I am just editing title thread slightly....

Streak, much as I hate to disagree I think you should have left the topic title as it was, this bloke is ****head! Personal opinions are all very fine...as long as they stay personal, but this bloke, from his lofty position as a stock-broker, is putting his opinion of various bikes out there for all to see...all without the benefit of any apparent qualifications upon which to base these opinions. He does not say at any point whether he has actually ridden any of the bikes he rubbishes, nor does he say where, how or why he might have come across the sort of insights he is putting forward. The snide way this is written gives me the strong impression that he likes the sound of his own voice far more than he likes any actual facts. Especially when the first words of the article are "I used to be mad on motorbikes", and he follows that up with the statement later that "I don't own a bike at the moment". He strikes me as a really arrogant little twerp who should learn when to keep his personal opinions to himself.

Sorry, but I really dislike people who seem to think that 10 minutes on a bike makes them an expert and that gives them some sort of God given right to pontificate.  :well  :CB--

Did't read the article but have to agree with the statement that "real bikers don't like them". Of course they don't like em. Only people that ride Motorcycles ride em. Everyone knows who ride bikes or should know that ride bikes is that all Bikers are "*******"and only own a bike so they can ride em to the nearest Coffe Joint for a Latte when the sun's shining and its a Sunday :rofl
People who actually ride bikes, ride bikes that work, "Bloody Simple" people who ride bikes only as an excuse so they can play dress up and as a way of impressing their friends call emselves in  this country, anyway, "BIKERS"
Been a "BIKIE" since the day my Grandmother called me one when I rode an old Excellsior, and was 10 years old near 50 years ago.
So yeah real Bikers don't like em cause?????????ahhhhhhhhhhhh cause real bikers only ride a bike cause the BMW isn't a convertible :rofl

Edited due to the inflammatory nature of the corrected noun

Terry,

To call Bikers *******, is going a bit far, and is un-neccesary . In Oz, Bikies are usually those who belong to the 1% crowd, and Bikers are the rest of us.

(I have even moderated my own post)

So wrong. To me the use of ******* in reference to Bikers is perfect.
Prior to lets say 1986/87 when the first HOG club was formed in Australia everyone who rode a Motorcycle was a BIKIE.
The term BIKER is an American term and was started being used in Australia, when members of the HOG club which in the words of Harley Davidson "CEO" Vaughn Beals allowed everday people, like accountants to dress up for the day and be something their not.
It was then that certain???? motorcycle owners?????? started calling themselves Bikers. Oh and then it cought on with the Virago riders and others who enjoyed the then trendy thing of drinking Coffee and calling coffee with milk in it a LATTEE :rofl
In Australia the word BIKIE had nothing to do with those Motorcycle enthusiastits that were members of clubs. Everyone in Australia who rode was called a Bikie.
In Australia we have Bikies, Truckies, Surfies. In America they have Bikers, Truckers, Surfers.
In Australia prior to Bikers we had huge Motorcyclke events to go too, a couple of times a year,  but because of what happened at a  couple of events when Bikers decided to Sue the organizing club putting on the event everything stopped.
When was the last time you went to a weekend Motorcycle rally/event that had 10000 people at it, all camped out having fun????

Stood at the gates of an event in 1989 with a couple of mates, when one a world known motorcycle journalist mentioned that their were a whole lot of new Harleys coming through the gate.
The other mate replied that their were a whole lot of new leather jackets as well :rofl
You see both mates and me included came from a time when you brought a Motorcycle the dealer would throw in a new jacket, helmet and with luck a manual if you brought the Bike then.
Nahhhhhhhhh to me so called Bikers will always be W****** but then again I do live in a country where people don't tell me what to think and believe, but their are those people around that want everyone to thik the same, and be the same, isn't their???????

Agree with Brock. Motorcycle riders are too fragmented into their various groups already, so reinforcing those divides is not good long term.  Everyone does what they want, so fine by me.

Everyone can have an opinion, so best not to argue about them as no point really.  I could wrire and article like that with my opinions, but it would not help anyone really. I could post that link up in other ST forums and I am sure that there would be very robust opinions, especially those from the UK where the author seems to have ridden.  It is just like articles that say tourers/sports tourers etc are not sports bikes/naked bikes so are too heavy, lack fun etc etc.  I think STs would have longer average periods of ownership that many other bikes, and I know of more than a few people who have more than one just in case they can't get another one.

I could see this thread spiralling out of control a bit if we are not careful.

For someone who lives in England, Mr Pratley uses a lot of Americanisms. He can say what he likes, free speech, but we all know just how good the ST is. Doubt if he has ridden one more than around the block, then he would know.  :wink1  He even gave HD a serve, so he can't be that Americanised. I still think of Australian riders as 'bikies' or motor cycle riders.

Wow. Who cares what this guys thinks. Is anyone here going to lose sleep if this guy doesn't buy an ST ?  Not me. I didn't buy mine to impress him. We all ride what we have found suits us. What car do you all drive?  Who cares. No doubt you have what suits your needs or what you can afford.

P.S. I love my ST 1300. ( But I have owned a sports bike ) Anyone care? No. Didn't think so.

I know I started this but really I don't care what anyone else does,
with some there is a ego thing happening, that's their prpblem.
I ride an ST because I want to. it's cheap, heaps of grunt for what I do and keeps me warm and comfortable. Doing 50k km plus a year is more than a lot of critics do, so while they stay home and voice various opinions I am out there riding, enjoying myself and isn't that what it is all about.

Does it really matter a blurt if we're called bikers, bikies, or whatever..........does it really matter if one prefers drinking coffee or latte...........does it really matter if some dress up to the nines or only ride on Sundays.........it really doesn't matter one little bit!!

We all enjoy our riding in our own way.........if we all felt the same way, and did the same thing, we'd be a bloody boring lot wouldn't we! :p
There are many paths to the top of the mountain.....but we all need to find our own way!

Chaps, it's an essay written with a particular style and audience.  He's not writing for the motorcycling community, he's writing for that hated breed, the motorcycle owners who want the "edge", the image, but aren't what we regard as serious riders.  Yes, they probably only ride Sundays, and yes, probably only over to Newstead for a coffee with their trendy mates.  They can probably buy any bike they want on their bonuses alone.  Luckily for us, many of them are dragging on lycra these days and riding titanium push bikes costing as much as a new naked motorcycle.  He writes from his experience- many writers wouldn't have mentioned the ST Hondas- but he rode in Europe where the Pans have a big presence.  Notice he doesn't mention ST1300s because he probably hasn't heard of them.

Like everyone says, leave him alone.  Emma won't let him hurt himself.  And you certainly won't see her riding pillion if he ever dares defy her and buys a Harley CVO Ultra Classic Electraglide.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

As they say "bankers are ******" and I think Marcus was playing with his tallywhacker when he wrote this artilce.

Hey, he draws a similarity between the ST and the big banks.  Suggesting their big, reliable and albeit a bit boring but they're safe and that does appeal to my conservative nature.  Just like the big banks the ST will still be around when those lesser financial institutions/investments/motorcycles have long since perished.....that can't be a bad thing!

I'm not offended by Marcus's article but I hope his financial advice is better than his motorcycle journalism.  :grin
