South Australian Railways?
Correct, and you're lucky that Alans1100 is not around at the moment as he would get it in a second.
The
South Australian Railways was an icon of SA for one hundred years, and was one of the biggest employers and trainers in the state, and the SAR initials were seen and known everywhere. They had railway maintenance, and carriage & steam loco manufacturing plants all across SA, including Mile End, Islington, Peterborough and Tailem Bend, and built one of the biggest fleets of steam locos in the world. SAR was eventually absorbed into Australian National. Any South Aussie would know SAR, and most families would have had some member who worked for SAR some time in the family's history. Almost every shed in SA would have at least one tool stamped SAR (or BHP for that matter!!), probably obtained by shadowy means such as the
“apprentice wage subsidization scheme”. Here's an example from my own shed.
Spanner, well done, and it's your ball.....
