Diesel in South Australia....
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:09:44 AM »
On Thursday morning at dark o'clock, I leave for a nice little jaunt to Wilmington in South Oz.

I am going this way.....

http://goo.gl/maps/36RyX

... and am meeting up with Tony in West Wyalong for a great bakery brekky, and then joining up with PhilSTer for the run from Wilmington to Silverton, and the Mad Max Museum.

I may also stop in and see Alanst100 for latte coffee if I'm around at the right times

I will post updates as I get opportunity, and a ride report with pics when I get back on Wednesday week. Then, it's straight off to Inverell that next Saturday!      :runyay

Roughly 4,200 clicks.

My latest upgrades to the 13 to prepare for the trip include:
- new PR3 on the front - bedded in beautifully this weekend gone in perfect weather on Sunshine Coast Hinterland roads      :grin
- Sena SR10 and SMH10 comms/bluetooth system
- relocate uhf cb to be further from tank bag (for better tight turns when slow manouvering)
- buy and fit Oxford X-30 magnetic tank bag.
- customize (read snip) balaclava to reduce wind buffeting noise in helmet
- re-jig the 'mess' that was Cig lighter sockets and USB sockets in my rhs fairing pocket to a regimented and usable resource
- re-pack tool kit and re-arrange side panniers for more usefulness and practicality
- turf out half the 'just in case' crap I usually lug around

If you see me out there, I'll certainly return a wave.

Watch this space....

Cheers, Diesel

Hi Diesel,

Might I suggest that since you're going to Wilmington that you add Horrocks Pass http://goo.gl/maps/ivj9e Phil will come through here anyway.

There's also Pitchie Richi Pass http://goo.gl/maps/mkr8K  but to take in both you would need to do this loop http://goo.gl/maps/pZCib

Thanks Terry - you are always saying how your gear HAS to WORK and be RELIABLE or it goes in the filing cabinet (bin) and it is sooo true.

@Alan - Horrocks Pass is def on the list mate - but there isn't room for Pitchie Ritchie this trip - maybe a big loop home from the National Meeting next year.

Cheers, Diesel

Are there any IBA awards built into that outing Dave?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

OK - I'll answer in order...

@Alanst1100 - sounds great mate. Looks like we will rock in there around 10.00am.

That looks like a damn big trip with quite a few big days :eek (you FarRiders are bloody impressive :-++)
Are you camping along the way?

Yep mate - camping for a few days - unless it's pi$$ing down - and - like you - I have been improving my bike (and stamina) over the years to make it into a great Long Distance Weapon - with rider comfort and farkles such as Highway Pegs and Moorehouse Seat etc

Do you ever work Diesel?
Safe travels mate.

Yes Skip - that is the crap part which separates weekends!      :rofl

Isn't Horricks Pass where the memorial for Davo is?

Close champ. The memorial plaque is here....

http://goo.gl/maps/jBK95

This is also the Banner shot of the FarRiders' website - Looking ahead to the start of the picturesque Flinders Ranges. Horrocks Pass is further along this road (5km) over the Mtns, and comes out just shy of Wilmington

And say hello to the dude selling oranges at the Caltex servo..has he destroyed his car any more since we went through on the Border Run!!

Is this in Peterborough mate?

Are there any IBA awards built into that outing Dave?

No Bill - just a tourist run with another promise to myself fulfulled.

Will see country like this in S.A.....

@Diesel

The guy selling oranges is at the Caltex in Peterborough. Current fuel price is around $1.49 for unleaded. They don't have PULP (premium) but 98 instead.

Do you need all that stuff :)

As for the Orange bloke, be prepared for a tale of woe of what else has gone wrong in life. He probably only talks to groups of ST1100Ps anyway..

Have a great trip. Having been on most of the roads recently you will have a good time. Just watch out for the cows/goats/wombats/kangaroos/sheep/emus/blue lights
