Fuel Reserve light HELP

Can anyone help before i do surgery. The fuel reserve light does not come on when empty. It does however lightup on dash when ignition is turned on and then off when engine is running. Is there a fuse between tank sender and dash. No manual as yet and it is a 2001 ST1100PY. I had a feeling it was not working however have done 450Kays for 22.6 litres. I syphoned tank dry to see no crud in tank. It all looks good.

I have the same issue and there is a fix.

Part number 37810-MN5-008 for the sensor mounted on fuel pump
 "          "       17574-MN5-000 Fuel pump gasket

I haven't priced locally yet but US is about $AUD40.00 plus shipping. for the sensor

The gasket is about $11 locally and half of that from an international site.

I'd suggest it's an overnight job. Fuel pump out the night before and let the fuel evaporate before attacking the sensor with a soldering iron.

Thanks Alan. Might have to think about this and may tackle when I do the timing belt and coolant connections with tank out. I will carry a stick in the meantime. may look at wiring also first to make sure no breaks etc

My light doesnt come on till 23/24 litres used. So it may be working fine. Mpst Fuel that I have put in is about 27.3l

Brock thought of that one so I drained all fuel and i could see the bottom of the tank and the fuel float. I figure it must show then. I also hesitate to run tank dry picking up dirt into filter causing more problems. I will keep and eye on how much I use for the 400-450 range Peth to Geraldton etc. Thanks for thoughts though

The light should come on about where the red is on the gauge.

I know mine doesn't work as I ran out of fuel waiting for it to come on with spare fuel on board and ready for the moment. Mine failed sometime last year.

Not a bad run that road. Only trouble was we had to fill up at the truck stop about half way. The joys of riding two up and towing a trailer........lol

My light comes on around 480k.

well thanks to everyone for their help. I thought i would investigate further and syphoned the tank so that all fuel or nearly all fuel was gone and the float was sitting on the bottom. i then went for a ride and after about 1 kilometre the light comes on and I ride another 21k's back home.     The gauge shows past the red and down about on third into the E. So the next job is to go for a ride and see how many k's I can do on a tank.    Need to check a job in Williams then Kellerberrin and Back. Maybe Sunday. Google maps may need to be consulted.  :CB--Anyway thanks again for everyones time and research.

My low fuel light comes on when there is between 4 and 5 litres left (based on there being 28 litres in a full tank.

yorkie probably sunday morning about 7.00 or so from Gosnells to Williams then brookton beverley quairading to Kellerberrin then great eastern back thru northam can come thru york to the lakes then back home. It may be better if i reverse course and come thru york first. Depends on weather and I am going to V8's Sat all day and how i feel. Any ideas. I need to check on jobs in Kellerberrrin and Williams.

second thoughts Gosnells at 7.00 to the lakes turnoff onto york at 8.30 and meet there. East to cunderdin turnoff check job in cunderdin along great eastern check on kellerberrin then south to Beverley leave you there then down to narrogin west to Williams check job then north back home. Hows that

If it doesn't come on with the ignition it may well be the globe.

I have this issue with my 02 ST1100, the light comes on but it will not show with the light that the fuel is low. I have run out believing I still had fuel so I know my bike will do around 500 K's before it runs out. Now I just use the odometer though if I could find a replacement part at a reasonable price I would have a go at fixing it.
