ST 1100 breaking down
« on: May 06, 2013, 12:50:41 PM »
 :blk11

Hi guys, i have just come home from a great 4 day ride through south Australia (my home state) into Victoria through the great alpine highway onto Bright Wangaratta, Shepparton Swan hill and back home, most enjoyable with my friend on his first ride with his ST 1100.
The question in have is my ST 1100 seems to break down at around 5- 6000 revs it will hold around 110 K but wont go much more than that? i'am not sure if there is an electrical issue or if its just a semi blocked fuel in line filter? once i slow down to around 60 kph for a short distance the bike seems fine until i crank it up again. It will sit on the speed limit all day with out a problem, but if i open her up to pass quickly it will faulter? any thoughts will be appreciated. Before i left home i serviced the bike new oil air filter  new spark plugs..

Regards Brenton

What sort of air filter are you using, it could be causing an air restriction.

Hi Brock, i used the standard air filter, the bike was doing the same thing before i changed it, i thought that may have been the problem as the old filter was clogged bad... but the feeling i get when i throttle hard is the bike isn't fireing on all pot's , but i could be wrong..

Sounds a bit like a problem I had, which was the fuel filter being clogged up, so fuel starvation was a problem at times.  Also worth checking that the vacuum fuel tap is working, as these are known to get splits in the rubber diaphragm and start causing problems.  It is easy to bypass for checking purposes.

After these simple things there are other possibilities, such as fuel pump (which can be tested for flow).

Good to see you have a inbuilt speed limiter.

Change you fuel filter first. Mine had a similar issue at 3800rpm which turned out to be a tiny pin hole in the fuel tap diaphram letting air through and not opening the valve fully, thereby restricting the flow.

Thanks, i will try the fuel filter first and see how that goes , process of elimination ......I don't think it's anything major or it would not run smooth all the time. :think1

Hi Brenton - welcome aboard.

Some fantastic country you mentioned there (Bright-Wang etc).       :thumb

When I read your probs, my first thought was FUEL. But without riding it - could be spark breaking down too.

Hondatech may be able to help with this as he is in the trade.

Anyways - thanks for the intro. Keep an eye out for OzSTOC rides coming through your area.

Cheers, Diesel

Thanks guys for all your help, what a great site this is.

I ended up replacing the fuel filter.......completely blocked, wonder it even started!! but did you think i had trouble finding a fuel filter with the right ends and barb for the big girl, ended up buying an after market filter glass with replacable filter inside and it came with 3 different barbs you can screw in the ends....problem solved, she pulls like a train now.
Ready for the next adventure....

Cheers

Where about did you get it?  I bought a non-Honda one from the Honda dealer, who had generic ones in a variey of barb sizes under the counter.

Welcome from Far North Qld Brenton. My local Honda dealer keeps EMGO brand filters that are identical to the standard Honda unit. Instead of costing a firstborn child or a left leg and arm he sells the aftermarket units for $7.50 whic is not bad. Apparenly this filter is a standard fit on a number of Honda models.
