Tank Bag for ST1300

So I'm Farkling again much to the credit cards screams of protest....


We purchased a few years ago a Third Gear magnetic tank bag from eBay as a trial and that did the job very well. We then aquired another Oxford magnetic that didn't quiet tick all the boxes.....we use the tank bag with success on longer rides and touring and now want to change around the bag setup for some future IBA rides in mind in addition to touring duties.

We have always been acutely aware of the Magnetic bag and laying it back on the seat so as not to collect a piece of blue metal from the gravel and turn the tanks finish into many tears, it's only a matter of time before Yuk !! Happens

The tank Bag I selected was a Givi XS 308 with the Locking ring system for attachment to the tank....the bag is a 20ltr expandable with detachable bum bag, waterproof cover, clear removable map/iPad pouch, and most of all....Doesn't touch the tank 

But naturally there is a catch......this bag is not a recommended fitment for the ST1300, in fact none of the XS Bags in the Italian GIVI range are.....


But I see this as a "Hardly a challenge for a trained man" moment and bought it any way.....so watch now how the modification to this bag to offset the locking ring and make the GiVI XS308 Tank bag become ST1300 friendly

Interested to see how this goes. I tried the 5 ltr Givi and it was OK untill I put the MCL riser block on then it fouled the bars.
The problem is the tank filler is too far forward.
Jacinta is happy because it fits the CF Moto perfectly.

I have bought the bag back about 100mm because of this very issue Graham.....just waiting for the paint to dry and then post some pics etc

So here is the finished product.....bag is now mounted 100mm back from where it would normally be mounted, mounting conventional resulted in as expected very limited....well NO range of movement for the bars.




The adaptor plate is an old aluminium road sign that was acquired and cut to shape



The mounting ring is mounted to the tank filler lid in the conventional manner....I removed the opposing locking ring from the bag 

Ohh and that not a scratch in my tank in the pic 


The plate was made just a little wider than the base of the bags own base using the same mounting holes that the locking ring would use.....plate was folded to allow the bag to sweep back with the angle of the tank...sanded the alloy back to bright, eitched, and 2 top coats.....locking ring mounted 100mm forward of its traditional position and all sorted 



If the adaptor plate works out I will remove and powder coat, if the design is sound but the alloy a little to flexible I will use it as a template and make the adaptor plate from stainless steel.


So we see how it goes   


Bars now have a full range of movement....just

Tank bag only gets the light stuff.....gloves, caps, sunscreen, snacks, sunnies etc.....wouldn't exeed a kilo all up.....the item that does sneak up on you that adds weight is loose change so we have found

Looks very good.  Since it sits clear of the tank, my concern would be the potential for it to bounce and thus mark the tank.    Otherwise, I love the simple locking system, which is not using magnets or straps.

Looks a very good attachment system with quick attachment and release . . I think I would put some clear plastic protection on the tank to guard against possible scratches . . . Done very neatly of course so that it looked good/hardly noticeable even when tank bag was not being used . .

For anyone with a Bagster tank cover i can recommend buying a Topsellerie tank bag.

Because it is designed to sit further back,it does not interfere with the steering at all.

Ice you  you forgot the weight of the ice and a drain hole in the bottom  Dontyou let them Crownies get warm

I had thought about the Ice but had 2 issues....

1. Getting Ice on the road and only using half a bag is just waste, waste, waste....

2. The drain hole presents a numbing issue.... which nurry to snap freeze 


So new plan is to mount a Danfoss 35 refrigeration compressor into the remainder of the Tank bag...reduces capacity  but now need to fit a Deepcycle battery and 100watt solar panel.....looks like another farkling weekend ahead of me

Just remove the curling wand, curling iron & hair straighter and you will have plenty of room for the compressor in the back --- Simples.
