Title: Going for my Big Boy licence
Post by: mr2u on March 09, 2014, 04:09:28 PM
Hi all,
I have managed to secure a spot on Monday the 31 march at Morley, 1:50 pm.  :runyay
If anyone is nearby at that time, I’m looking for a favour. I need someone to ride from Beechboro with me into Morley :cop so I can go for my test :law. From memory, it must be a licenced rider of more that 3 years in that class (I think).

I Know I’m asking a lot, but my mate that I usually ride with, will be working up north at this time.
It’s taken me 3 months to secure this spot and the next available is 6 months down the track.  :H

I may be Dumb, but what's a 'big boy licence'?

It allows him to sit at the big persons table and eat with the grown ups..  similar to getting your pen license in school when you graduate from having to use a pencil .....    :Stirpot :Stirpot

Or....

He is going for his open license for his motorcycle so he is not restricted to riding either a 250cc (old license model) or a LAMS approved bike up to 650cc.

I'm still trying to work out what a"big boy" licence is?

Seriously, don't you have restricted licences in Vic?
In Qld these days you are restricted to a LAMS bike, which limits the power-to-weight ratio for the first year of riding, then you can re-do the test to ride a more powerful bike if you want to.

Got my licence in NSW. Had to ride one year with red 'P' plate then on to full licence.
Didn't have to sit any additional tests (maybe i'm an illegal). Went from a 250cc to the ST1100. Now riding in SA with a SA licence. why does someone have to ride with you to the test? Sounds a bit like when I was working in Quebec, Canada. You couldn't ride a motorbike on L plates unless you had a full licenced rider riding with you. You were not allowed to ride on your own.

Yes, are restricted for first 12mths ( LAMS), then can ride any bike. If you have a full  car licence to start with. No retest applies :wht11

This line threw me I don't know why he needs someone to ride with him????

I thought he was going for another kind of licence

In WA, going for a full licence, is still another licence, therefore rider must be accompanied by a rider/drive of the same class or higher. Unless I think if you are now licensed under the graduated rider scheme. ( it only just started over here.in WA)

In WA a learner has to be accompanied by an experienced rider when riding on the road.

Geez it shows how much we need the same laws in all states to be the same! :wht11

That seems strange, that a L or P plater needs someone to ride with.  I'd have never got the experience I got in the 20 months on my L and P plates in NZ if I'd had to ride with someone all the time.  I did something like 24,000 km in the 20 months I was on my learner bike.

Mind, I was restricted to a 250 cc, the Aussie based LAMs bikes didn't come in until after I'd got my full license.  And at first, while I was on my L plate, the maximum speed limit was 70 km/hr - though no-one stayed to that, on the open road that speed was dangerous.

As an over-25 I could have got my full license in a minimum of 9 months, normal was 6 months on your L plate then a year on P plates, you could halve your P plate time by doing a defensive driving course.  Over-25s had to do 6 months L plate, then 6 months P plate but that too could be halved by doing a defensive driving course.  I went for my full after about about a year, though I did a defensive driving course with my son while he was going for his car license.  Didn't move up to my 800 cc Boulevard M50 until I'd been riding for 20 months and felt comfortable to do it.

Yeah I mean, if I had to ride with someone, I'd have NEVER been able to ride... as noone I knew at the time had their licence... So I think that's a bit of a silly rule

So what would happen if someone from NSW on 'L' or 'P' plates rides into WA or Qld? Would they be booked for riding alone?

Good question? Honestly, having to ride with someone is a silly idea

Only L plates need to be accompanied not P plates.
It really makes sense you don't let people on L pates in cars drive by them selves.
Things have changed, I got my full bike license in NSW on my 17th birthday.

True but how are they suppose to get riding experience if there's no one to ride with?

I fully approve of learners having a mentor, but what is an accompanying rider going to do if a learner makes a mistake?

Grab the handle bars and steer them out of difficulty?  Give their rear brake a bit of a press and push forward on their handlebar to get them through a corner?

At least the PoPo would have a witness who would know what went wrong for the inquest!

The accompanying rider is the same as sitting left seat in a car. You give instructions and the learner then carries them out. If able to use intercom, then pass instructions on the fly. You then stop at a prearranged point and critique, then proceed to next point and so on...

Hahaha, like that happens, most learners won't have intercoms

As long as people from other states ride to the conditions of their licence, they're fine. I did think that the Australian Road Rules would have sorted all this crap out. We are still at the mercy of people who think their ideas are better than the next bloke. Be good if they all sat down around a table and sorted their shit. Rant over.  :OldMan

Thanks to all the kind people who have expressed a willingness to help, makes me proud to be part of this group.

I have been riding bikes all my adult life, just most of it illegally and now it's time to fix that. The only bike I had that was 250 or under was my first (Honda XL 185)
Back then you walked in to the local cop shop, did 20 multi choice questions and they gave you a bit of paper stating you were good to go for 12 months ( restricted to 70 km/h) . It took me 8 years to get around to sitting my "full 250" licence as there were no points issued on a learners licence back then. So I just stayed on my learners and rode without my "L Plates " showing. I never got stopped either.

When I went for my "250" licence, I had to borrow a bike to do it on, as the smallest I had was a CB900. If I was to ever get caught, it was only a $50 "riding out of class" fine (I only ever got caught once, I lied my way out of 2 others). Now I'm told its much harsher if I get caught, big fines and lots of points) Hence the urge to get my Open licence.

Way back when I was living in NSW, I could have sat my licence and got my "Full Open Class licence" as I had a NSW Learners as well as a full NSW car licence at the time, but I was too slack, and by the time I got around to it, I had missed out by 3 months. They had changed the laws sometime in the late 80's early 90's if I remember correctly. You had to have someone with a full licence in the class you were going for, either on the back of your bike, or riding next to you. ( I have a rule of " one bike, one penis, that I like to stick to.)

The bit that makes me laugh is I have a licence to drive  a Car, a Bus (55 seats and over), a Truck with a load in excess of 5.5m wide and over 35 tones (i did heavey haulage till about a year ago) as well as a Road Train licence, but I'm restricted to a bike of 250 cc or less, and if caught on anything bigger, I could lose ALL my other licences, go figure.

Ok rant and dribble over, thx again to all that offered to help, i will call and check if you are still available on the weekend before the test, if not sooner, depending on work.

I don't know if it is the same in other states but in WA you can not drive out of WA on a learners permit, even if you have a licenced instructor with you.

Yes you can be a passenger and be driven out of the state, you just can't drive yourself in any other state.                 Thought I would get that in before someone asked.

Just remember, its a permit to learn in your state, not a licence to drive. So driving into another state may exceed the conditions of the permit.

THANK THE GODS - got my motorbike license before these mad, idiot, pen pushing, back room government morons got involved !!!   :butt

Basically just rode my 650cc BSA A10 from the army base at Karrakatta (Perth) to the Subiaco Police Station, just 10 minutes away, early one morning, went in and asked the nice policeman with the three stripes and a large stomach if I could do a motorbike riders test.

He very obligingly said " Sure - got any sort of a license and a bike with you ? - Right, outside now."
Went out to the street, gave him my piece of paper (civilian car license)  told him a mate had ridden the bike there for me and had gone off with another guy in an army land rover to get something to eat.   No problems with that either.  :grin

Basically he told me to ride around the block and not to fall off.  Thought he was going to follow me on a police bike - NO !  :o

Rode around the block, didn't fall off, got back to where I'd started.
The nice man was standing exactly where I'd left him, having a morning cigarette.  :law

Said " Yer - OK. "   Scribbled on my license, handed it back to me as said - " You can piss off now - you've got your motorbike license."
Looked at my license paper, it said 'Class D' approved' and a signature of sorts with the date.

He also scribbled right across it -  ' TEMPERORY AUSTRALIAN '     :eek

The old days where much better - except for the fact we didn't have ST's back then.  :'(

Flip

 :wht11

( SIGHS !!!  NO HONDA ST's in Viet Nam either !  :'( :'( :'(

Took nearly a full day of passport, WA MDL, 'house card' (valid living address ID) and other paperwork to be translated, BUT - no booking required.
Just AUS $10.50 mostly 'coffee bribes' to get my first VN driver's license.
Someone made a stuff up. (something NO VN government worker/official will ever admit to)
Instead of a 1 year restricted to 175cc bike license - have a full 5 year drive/ride anything of any size you like, including buses, trucks, etc, whatever license !    ++

You can ride interstate on L's (at least NSW L's), but you are still governed by your homestate rules. So if you have NSW L's and ride into Qld, you are still limited to 80kph rather than the QLD 100kph limit. Not that they'd notice anyway.
