Must say I use my leg/foot ocassionally in acknowledgment  :think1 Usually after overtaking another bike in slow traffic or moving Left to allow another bike through I throw the right leg out as a "the lanes yours buddy"....

I always thought Foot waving was to point out dangerous things on the road (gravel, pot holes and what not)

I don't believe I've seen foot waving in 50 years of riding a motorcycle.

A member of the Vintage bike forum was amazed at the foot waving when he recently moved to France. It is the done thing there apparently.

It has been used to indicate that a following bike can pass safely where it is dangerous to take ones hands of the bars. I've used this to let bikes following me that it's safe to pass on winding roads like the Gillies Range.

There's no way i'm sticking my foot out some of that overtaking was really too close for my liking.

Ive never seen a foot wave, so if some one did it, I wouldnt understand and just think the waver was being silly

How odd.   I've never seen it, and have only seen a foot used to indicate a road hazard, such as a pothole or road kill.

It seems to me most of those guys are using their leg instead of their indicator.  It appears to be a polite acknowledgement during "cutting in" and at any other time they want to "wave", and includes a few arm waves.
It's in France by the look of the number of Citroens and Renaults.
