another use for starter motor?
« on: May 25, 2016, 07:32:54 AM »
I have been asked to put a 12v motor onto a honey extractor. Where the frames are fited in and spun to extract the honey. Its the size of a 44 gal drum and is presently hand cranked. I am thinking about a starter motor, geared down.  Has anyone any experience in using these motors on other projects. I am wondering about continuous use and it getting too hot.
Thanks Paul

An old washing machine motor may be more suitable unless of course it needs to run on 12 volts?

How hot it will get will depend on load and cooling.
I imagine load will probably be lighter than when used as a starting motor.
But because they are not designed to be run continuously they don't have any cooling so continuous running even at low loads may result in over heating.

May be best to stick with 12 volt motors and limit the duty cycle if is heating is an issue (or devise a cooling mechanism).
Jerry rigging 240 volt motors might electrocute the stray bee (or apiarist).     :eek
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Or a windscreen wiper motor. They are designed to run all the time and are smaller and lighter.

For this sort of use I would suggest trying a 12/24 volt wheelchair motor. Easy enough to series up two 12Volt car batteries if 24V. is needed. (and will be electrically safe) Should be able to get something ex the local tip recyclers and might be lucky and get the speed controller as well.
The rotational speed of the drum does not need to be very high, from memory when I had a hand cranked unit holding four frames, about 100 rpm. was more than fast enough.
would be easy enough to select various sizes in pulleys to get the optimum rotational speed that is needed and a car v belt to drive it.
The last thing that I built with a wheel chair motor was a power hacksaw which works exceptionally well at about 60 strokes a minute.
It would be very difficult if not impossible to get a car starter motor to rev slow enough especially as it would be so lightly loaded.

Beat me to it Winston.
I now work 9-5 in the mobility industry playing with these things all day.

The speeed control etc would be more of a PITA due to various connections and check's that are made by the "computer"/controller.

BUT the motor will run quite happily direct on 12V at about 1/3rd speed  :beer.

so get to the tip and grab one Paul
I may ride a Ducati, but I've rode lots of (other peoples :-) ) ST's

So nice to see you back in the land of the living!

Good to hear you're employed, I trust happily so.  That's a growth industry, so you should be set for life if you like it.      :thumbsup

Do you still do backyard weekend work on bikes?  We'd all like to know.   :whistle

Without de railing the thread, YES the bike Comms business is still a hobby operation, back to minimal stock and Saturday mornings.
Mobility pays bugger all, but its better than you get sat around twiddling thumbs  :wink1.
