MJM Seat

I just got back from a trip to Goulburn to get my factory seat redone by MJM, here are some photos. Very happy so far on the 4 hour trip home two up, interested to see how it works one up. We are doing a Putty run on the weekend so should get some more hours to bed it in and see how it works.

(Before anyone asks, I'm not replacing my seats I'm just curious what the MJM seats are like. I'm still EXTREMELY happy with my "Russell Day-Long" seats )

No it does not have gel, my last seat was a Travelcade Saddleman did have gel and it was good but the gel heated up in the sun and held the heat for ages. So this time I've gone with full foam. Cost was $495, I dropped the bike and seat of at 4 pm and Mick went all out and had it back to us the next day at 230 pm, my wife was so glad to get on the road as the temperature was dropping on our way home. The trip down was freezing and neither of us was looking forward to the cold. Next time I travel in the cold I might look into heated gear.

Abe had one done a while back.Cheaper than a Russell.
I guess it all depends on the individual bum & budget.

The "Russell Day-Long" is by far the best BUT it is also by far the most expensive coming in at $1000+ (That is a bloody BIG investment that took me a long time to save up for)
There are a lot of aftermarket seats out there and the MJM looks like an awesome seat and a hell of a lot cheaper
So getting more reviews on the other seats out there is a great way for people to come to a more informed decision that may save a lot of money

Example:
I tried a number of other options on my way to getting a seat that was awesome for me...
I had my original seats modified by John Moorhouse ($300), Tried an AIRHAWK ($150ish), Corbin Seat (Borrowed from Gadget), Skwoosh Gel Seat Pad ($140) before finally trying a Russell Day-Long that ST2UP lent me to try (What a legend )
Anyway needless to say I bit the bullet and now have my own Russell


Out of all the different options I tried the Skwoosh Gel Seat Pad was the best (before paying the big money for the Russell )
The MJM was one that I was keen to give a go as they look amazing and very well made but I never got a chance to try one

Some people are lucky and get something that is right for them straight away and others (like me) have to try a few options before getting the right one for them.
That being said I know a lot of people have had amazing results with the other options I listed above (they just didn't work out for me ).

Regardless of all my ramblings above, the more reviews out there the more chances people will be able to (hopefully) get it right the first time

I think most people don't have to go through as many options as I have but it can take a few goes to get the right seat for you

The best option (If possible) is to see if people have seats/pad that you can try before forking out hundreds of dollars for something that might work (I was lucky to be able to borrow the Corbin from Gadget and the Russell from ST2UP )
But sometimes that isn't an option so you have to just read up on as many reviews as you can before forking out the cash. One bonus though is that if an aftermarket sear or pad doesn't work out you can always sell them to recoup some of the costs

Anyway I look forward to hearing all about the MJM and how it goes over time

I bought a second-hand Corbin for a week's pay and didn't find it to be any better than the stock seat.  Since then I've used Airhawks, and found them pretty good for thousand mile days, with a few breaks to get the circulation moving.  The Day-Longs certainly sound fantastic, and you'd hope so for the investment.  At least when I fork out that much for a cruise control, I know exactly what the improvement will be.  Perhaps if Russell was in Oz where I could get an adjustment if needed, I'd be happy to spend the money.  Maybe I need to find an MJM to get an idea of what they can do since the Airhawk still leaves room for improvement.

I have a Russell Day Long saddle (front & rear) sitting on my ST1300 under cover in my garage.  Given my current rate of recovery from my fractured fibula & tibia and then some planned R&R on the Sunshine Coast, they ain't gunna be needed until mid to late October, later if Mrs W has her way.

If anyone wants to try / test them, they are available for a short term loan.  This offer is probably only worthwhile for a Victorian or whoever wants to pick-up / drop-off, as I think postage would otherwise be cost-prohibitive.

I've had three seats modified by MJM including one for my ST1300. I told Mick what I wanted and demonstrated where I needed the seat to be modified. Modesty prevents me from elaborating further except to say that the seat was tailor-made.
I rode the ST1300 from Byron Bay (NSW) to Denman (WA) to Broken Hill (NSW) in five days without getting a sore butt. The trip was planned to finish back in Byron Bay on day six but my ST1300 refused to proceed past Wilcannia. My two travelling companions made it back to Byron Bay in under six days.

I find the seat very uncomfortable, even in the first hour
I have purchase a lambs wool seat cover with no improvement.

Can't speak for the MJM, but can for the Russell Day Long seat.  It's great, damn great.

If you want to swap on to your red ST1300 for an hour ride, something can be arranged.  Send me a PM, if interested.

I've done a couple of 7 hour days on it now and can say I'm happy with the seat. He did add a lot of padding at the front to give me the height I asked for and I do tend to slide forward a bit but the padding is comfortable though harder than the standard foam he uses. I had what I thought was the factory seat but when he pulled it apart someone had lowered it somewhat and used softer foam so I'm happy with what Mike did which was to raise the seat and widen it. Only issue with widening was the the seat brackets now bind a little on the pillion seat when you remove them but still quite workable. I can't compare to a RDL but for the price I'd go the MJM again.
