Anyone know this ST1100?
« on: September 12, 2016, 09:54:17 PM »
Anyone on this site know the ST1100 in the photo which has just come up for sale?

Just done a check on the bike and it shows a 02/2005 compliance date and only 52,167.  Would anyone like to advise how much they would part for a similar ST?

Well went to test ride the ST this afternoon as its only local.

Its being sold by a dealer who bought it at auction however he has no service history/records so can't confirm the low odometer reading.  Bike seem to ride okay but I did find selecting gear/neutral wasn't that easy and clearly needs a decent service.

Also the bikes 02/2005 compliant but obviously they stopped making them in 2002 so can't explain that. Bike does come with panniers but they were taken off before test ride.

I've attached some further photographs for comments from site members as I've never ridden/owned a 1100 before so any pointers would be appreciated.  The bikes over priced so will have to work on that but the dealer will take my CF Moto and has offered not a bad trade-in for it.

Have you checked the rego and vin against the database to see if it may have been a repairable write off???
One day you will wake up and there won't be anymore time to do the things you've always wanted so do them NOW!!!

Yes mate checked the VIN and its clear and not a write off.

They're asking way too much!  $5,800.00 which they won't get from me but as I mentioned they will take my bike which saves me messing around with it.  Id rather get an ST off a site member but don't have the time to mess around with trying to sell my CF Moto at the moment.

It seems to have a taller after market screen, and it has a throttle lock, as well as what looks like a GPS mount on the dash, and a funny knobby thing in the middle of the dash.

Its a little unusual to find the bike in an auction, its definitely not direct from the police. At 52000 Ks its not done much work, the clunky shift is a sign that it needs an oil change. Probably hasnt had one since it was in police service.

Thanks Brock.  Unfortunately whilst the guy seems to think its an ex-police bike, he has no other knowledge of that.  Its got raised bars, wired in USB for GPS and yes the taller screen.

It is a police model, it has the speedo graduated in 2K increments, the voltmeter and the police switch unit on the right grip. (if you end up purchasing this bike, please dont chop out the wiring in the duck tail, its so handy for farkles)

Morning Natman et al...

As Brook has stated it was set up to be used by the police or another emergency service. Honda MPE brought (if I recall correctly), 30 of these machines into Australia in or around 2000-2002. I remember seeing a great line up of them in their Campbellfield premises at the time. I believe the plan was to re-issue police forces that already used them like Qld, WA, but by then the 1100's where both out dated and considered too heavy, especially in Victoria, where they were never used by VicPol, or any other emergency service for that matter. Though Ambulance Service Melbourne had one as a demo which was seen at Phillip Island at GP's etc., but never used for purpose. And I believe Qld went with Yamaha, Vic stayed with BMW, so Honda distributed the bikes far n wide to dealers to get rid of them.

The most plausable explaination I can come up with for the 2005 on the Vin, is that Honda MPE is in Melbourne and in Victoria all vehicles that are sold from (in), Vic have their compliance plates date stamped the year they are first registeted, not when the were built or left the factory. So it is quite plausably that the machine you cited remainded with Honda MPE until they found a dealer to move it. I know the bulk of the bikes moved in 2002, hence the frequent references made here on the forum to 2002 ST1100's, whereas it is my understanding the last ST1100 left the Honda factory in 2000/1.

So I think the bike you cite here is a ligit ST1100, sold to a private individual who has subsequently added bits to it. So the odometer reading may well be correct. I acknowlege however, the 1100 odometers are easy to tamper with. But in this case, from the pics you posted, the bike looks genuine. And I have seen dodgey ST100's in Honda Dealers! Hey Laurie;-)

Cheers:-)

With the older odometers it is easy to tell if they have gone past the maximum reading and restarted from zero.
Once the odometer restarts the numbers no longer line up straight.

Below is an example of what this looks like.

Judging by the pictures of the ST1100 the kilometers look genuine :thumbsup

Is there anyone in the Carlingford Court area of Sydney with more ST1100 knowledge than me able to go and have a look at this ST to give their honest opinion of whether its worth buying?  I've been and had a look and test ride but would like a second opinion.  Gladly pay for your time to do this.

Hi Natman, looks the real deal as an ex Police. Voltmeter, 2k increments in speedo. My bike is a 9/04 compliance 1100. First reg 2/05 in service 2 years with QLD out of service 4/07 with 52 on the clock. Also check under the r/h pie warmer lid for speedo calibration stickers ( lift out and turn over ). As said, clunky neutral and first gear, oil change will sort that out. Good luck.   :wht11 :eek

So all was going well!  Got in touch with Swann Insurance and they've refused to cover the ST because its a 2000 model with a 2005 registration!  Went through to their underwriters and they had a look into it but confirmed they're unable to cover because "they can't confirm the history of the bike between 2000 and the date of registration 02/2005". I didn't think that was an insurer's role! Strange that!  So frantically had to call around to find cover.  YOUi, NRMA, Shannons say its not a problem (although they're all much more expensive!)

I had a similar problem, when I bought my bike.

As there were no 1100s made after 2002, and mine is a 2003 I couldnt insure it so passed the problem back to the Finance company. They fixed it, the Bike is insured with Allianze (I think) and there is a note on the policy stating that although the bike is listed as 2002, its a 2003 compliance.

The late model Police ST1100s all have this problem.

But compliance plate is usually fitted at time of manufacture with month/date on the plate

"When VSS are satisfied that the vehicle complies, the Administrator of Vehicle Standards issues a document known as a Compliance Plate Approval. This is the authority to allow the manufacturer to fit compliance plates to vehicles of the specified make/model."

https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/standards/certification/

Approval number is on the plate.

Confusion might arise if year of first registration is used as the model year which we don't have on our SA rego certificate only year of manufacture taken from the VIN
