Hi all, hello from the dark ages.   The storms we had did not see that bad from Adelaide.  A lot of rain, thunder etc.   our main problem is relying on all of our backup power from Victoria when the government decommissioned all of our back up power stations.   Something has happened to the interconnector and the wind turbines do not go well in storms.   (40% of the stars power comes from renewable sources! which is why we have the most expensive power in the world) We are still very much in the dark in Adelaide and relying on battery only.  Some phone services have been lost because the batteries powering the towers have gone flat.   Some suburbs have just got power on but they have to do this very slowly apparently.  No one at the power networks can estimate when/if we will rejoin the 20th century.

A post on some thing positive to come out of this.  Whilst driving home through the city tonight I covered some 15km of city traffic with no traffic lights working and no street lighting.  I got home quicker than when the traffic lights are working.    No police directing traffic, just drivers being courteous and not driving like demented a-holes.   I doubt  this would happen if we have no power for another day, but it was a good to see some positives come out of this debacle

The power has to come on in small areas, to prevent shock loading the generators and inter connectors.

If the whole ste was tuirned on at once, then Victoria could drop off as well, and the generators could blow.

:eek   SA certainly got smashed, and I've just had internet restored.    Over 20 high voltage transmission towers in the mid north are damaged, with some blown over.    Saturated soils combined with the high winds are being blamed.   Other problems with the long term power outages have included sewerage pumps failing, reduced phone communications as battery backups on towers fail, two of our major metro hospitals had their emergency generators fail causing major problems in those hospitals, electric trains and trams stopping, traffic lights out, prangs everywhere etc etc etc.

At home we had no damage, other than a huge drenching, and our power was out from 1600hrs until 2015hrs, so in terms of power outage, we got out of it lightly.  Many areas may be powerless for days.   It's interesting watching the politicians bureaucratic spin doctors ducking and weaving, in light of our recent major power station closure and extensive reliance on wind generation, which can only work when normal power supply is on-line.

On a more personal level, just after the state wide outage hit, my old Dad had a stroke, and remains very ill and in the Flinders Medical Centre.  Well done to the staff for caring for him so well under difficult conditions.

You SA guys have always led the rest of us into the unknown (and often fraught) future.  I well remember Don Dunstan's antics in the political arena.  Good luck with renewable energy sources.
Trust your old man stabilises successfully, Pete.  Strokes are a major worry in terms of on-going capabilities.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Further storms are predicted for SA today/tonight.
Residents in many of South Australia's country areas may be without power for days, as the state braces for more storms and tries to recover from yesterday's mass blackout.

All the best for Dad, Pete

We didn't have it to bad yesterday. All ok until the power went out at about 4pm and some heavy rainfall and wind. Candle power for a couple hours before having an early night but had trouble sleeping but stayed in bed because it was warmer in bed. Got up a couple times and noticed clear skies and no wind; calm before the storm.

Woke up to wind and rain this morning and its still happening. Power came back on after 4pm and our Optus phone tower just came back on after it went down about 7 pm last night. Overall not as bad as forecasted for us.

Took these yesterday

Almost a lake in our front yard but at least the bike had another bath

Hi Pete, all the best for your father, he's in good hands at FMC.
Don't get me started on renewable energy, solar incentives and rebates and the whole bloody catastrophe. As a person who cannot have solar because of shading from trees (owned by the bloody council) I really enjoy paying higher tariffs to offset the the ridiculously generous State Govt. solar feed in rates to those with solar - NOT.
At least I can feel good we have politicians prepared to beggar the country to set a good example to countries like China and India who will see the error of their ways and they too will adopt outrageously expensive renewable energy.
Sorry, I get a bit toey about this stuff - and I haven't even had a beer!
Cheers ... Mark

A short piece of 1/2 inch copper water pipe of a copper nail in the offending trees would provide sun in about 2 years.

Power generation should have never been privatised . . Privatisation has never resulted in lower costs for the consumer . .

Like it has in SA.

We had one power company for the whole state and that has been broken up into separate companies each needing to make a profit. The power generators, the distribution network, the maintenance, the retailers all of it ending up with the end user (us) being ripped off.

Checked the rain gauge at 1:25pm local time today (Friday) and had 58mm or 2.4 inches of rain in our back yard since the rain started falling about 4 pm Wednesday.

Guess that was enough to wash the bike until next time.
