Just a quick little sideline about this location. Way back in the early 70's, my mate Jeff and myself arrived at the three ways intersection from The Barkly Hwy (Mt Isa)
We stopped for a rest break and a cuppa at the intersection (There was no roadhouse around the corner, then)
We were deciding whether to turn north (Darwin) or head South to SA, it was a 'flip a coin' moment.
While the billy was on the gas ring, we commented on the ridiculous Bus Stop sign at the intersection. I mean, what clown would erect a bus stop sign in the middle of nowhere? ... and then along came a bus.
Apparently one would head north from the Alice towards Darwin, and one would come west from the Isa heading for Tennant Creek, and they would meet here at the three ways and exchange a few Passengers.
The bus driver got out and berated us for parking on the bus stop and we thought he was joking, but he was fair dinkum about it!
So we wheeled our bikes ten feet fwd and around the corner, carried the gas bottle and billy to the bikes, and sat on our camp stools until the billy boiled. We then took great pleasure in enjoying a fresh made cuppa coffee in front of the driver and travelers.
Ten minutes later the other bus arrived, some passengers were exchanged and they moved on.
The Flynn memorial is about 50 metres north of the current Servo on the east side of the Stuart Hwy, at a rest / parking area less than a Km from the Three Ways intersection.
