I posted this on another forum but wanted to see what OzSTocers had to say as well.

After having had the need to access roadside assistance for a tow of about 87 km and finding out it was going to cost me OVER $680 even though I HAD RACQ Ultra who else do people use for those times when a breakdown requires a tow.

 My rear tyre had a catastrophic failure on the last leg of my BB2500 ..... 200 km from home!

 RACQ said that the max call out distance was 50 kms and the maximum tow was 20km. the balance was to be paid at a rate of $9.60 per km. I kindly told the RACQ person that that is ridiculous and he then came back with a price of $5.5o per km. That was still way too high so I got a mate to drive out for $300 and a carton of beer.

 I don't know what I would have done had I been further away from home.

 so ..... who do you use, who would you not use and what traps for young players are there when getting breakdown service quotes and policies?

NRMA recovered my ST1300 from Wilcannia to Cobar, approx 260 kms. They sent out a tow vehicle from Cobar.
I pay $199 a year for road side assistance for one bike. Nothing more to pay for the recovery.

I have RACQ Ultimate...but what you say in your post does not match what is available on the RACQ web site which highlights assistance up to 120kms and 60kms of free towing home or up to 120kms to contractor or other place so only 27kms extra or about $260... https://www.racq.com.au/roadside-assistance/roadside-assistance-options/ultra-care
Maybe make an inquiry and try for a free 1yr upgrade to Ultimate for the inconvenience...

 After waiting with BenT for a pickup about 20km east of Balladonia on Eyre Highway and then getting to Norseman WA, I upgraded to RACQ Ultimate when I got home.  RACQ was very helpful as Ben had Ultimate and he was able to "swap" some benefits so that he didn't have to pay for the tow.  Incidentally the bike and its owners were delivered to Kalgoorlie.

Perth rallygoers will recall that Ben received an "award" at the dinner in recognition of this little adventure!

Fortunately I haven't had to use it yet but that's the thing about insurance!

Here's a plug for a friend/ex-colleague of mine.... He's part of a new service that provides roadside assistance via a phone app (iPhone and Android). The app costs nothing, and the fees are charged only per callout.
Their focus is mainly cars, but they do have a m/c TOWIE in Sydney, and of course things like jump starts, fuel, etc are generic.
It wouldn't hurt to install the app just in case...

That got me looking at the entitlements.
When I ran out of fuel 20 km west of Broken Hill they charged me $15 (cash thank you) for the 10 litres.
The Brochure says I'm entitled to $60 per year.  It was the NRMA Call Centre who specified the charge, not the towie.  Maybe we don't get our full benefit when inter-state.  I'm assuming the NRMA equivalent is called "Premium Care" and it only offers "Help when you run out of fuel".  Hence you can't assume you'll get your full home-state benefits when out of State.

We have a Skoda car.  In 2015 we drove from Toowoomba to Townsville.  At Biloela we refueled with water contaminated fuel and the car conked out after 10Km.  We rang Skoda roadside assistance and they sent an RACQ breakdown vehicle from Biloela, who could not get it going and so went back to Biloela for his tilt tray and carted us and the car back to Biloela.  Skoda roadside assistance booked us into a motel for the night and arranged for us and the car to travel to the Skoda dealer in Rockhampton (a hundred Km or so) the next day.  Skoda offered us free car rental for two days, but we wanted to continue in our car, so we didn't take that offer up.  The car was repaired and back on the road later that day. 
Because the breakdown was not as a result of a faulty car, we had to bear the repair costs.  The accommodation and transport was borne by Skoda Assistance.  We later recovered the repair costs from Puma Energy (but that is another story).
That is how roadside assistance should be done,

Honda Rider Assist.
When I got my 1100 a mate put me onto Honda rider assist, he has used them a few times and can't speak highly enough of their roadside service.
For I think $118 you get platinum cover that covers brake downs, crash recovery, accomadation rental car and transport of your bike.
However the admin seems to be terrible. when I changed my bike and sent the new details they sent a new card with the previous details on it so I politely pointed out that there had been an error. two week later I get another card with the same details. Resulting In an email saying Heaven help me if I'm stuck by. the side of the road somewhere because I'm pretty sure that you can't. Then I got the correct card.
The next year I get the renewal notice the day after the expiry date so I transferred the money straight away. Six weeks later still no new card so I ring and they say I haven't payed, then at my urging O yes you did pay and you are covered. For weeks layer no card so I ring again." O we have them to post today". Never saw It.
This year No renewal so as the cars are insured with Youi and get free roadside assist the STarship is now on the NRMA membership and Honda assist is dumped.
