Adelaide to Byron Bay (and back)
« on: February 13, 2017, 10:10:49 PM »
Hi folks, if this query/thread is in the wrong place, my apologies - feel free to put it in the right place.
Last year I rode to Byron Bay on a Honda Shadow 750 to attend the Bluesfest for the first time (bucket list stuff). I enjoyed the ride (and the Bluesfest) so much I upgraded to the ST1300 so I could enjoy the ride even more and head off again this year (riding with a mate, he's on a Triumph Tiger 1050).
The reason for this thread is to ask the collective wisdom of those who know NSW (and possibly Vic.) regards the best route for the ride back home to the land of wind farms and candles.
The route over (and apologies to the Farriders (of which I'm one)) is in effect a 4 day exercise Adelaide - Toolybuc - Lake Cargelligo - Coonabarabran - Tenterfield then the Bluesfest.
Last year the return trip was Byron Bay - Tamworth - Cobar - Broken Hill - Adelaide.
This year I'd like to travel some more "interesting" routes back to Adelaide (i.e. not so much of the straight lines) of which I'm sure NSW has plenty and perhaps even taking a longer route through some of the Vic alpine regions. We will have from Easter Monday to the Friday (in effect 5 days to get back - could stretch to 6 days).
Any suggestions or recommendations are most welcome AND anyone interested in part or all of the ride is also most welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Mark

I can second Grafton-Ebor-Armidale....

Really any road that joins the Pacific Hwy to the New England is a good one.....

Bylong Valley way to Bathurst is rewarding if not a little potholed in places......and seeing your in Bathurst you a best do a couple of laps of Mt. Panorama.

Anything that puts you in the NSW and Victorian Highcountry on the Great Alpine Way and its side roads is worthy...and then ferry across to Queenscliff and across the Great Ocean Road all the way back to Port McDonnell the home would be a great run that I could recommend.

Cheers

From Byron Bay,  head North to Bruswick Heads then head up Brunswick Valley Way (old Pacific Hwy, mostly empty now and good road) through the Burringbar Range. Continue into Murwillumbah and then across to Kyogle. Head South to Casino and either slab it to Grafton and then the back run to Ebor and back down the Waterfall Way to Coffs Harbour or up to Tenterfield and then Guyra and back down to Ebor and the Waterfall Way to Coffs Harbour.

Then down to Port Macuarie/Wauchope and back up the range to Wacha and Bendemeer.

Down the New England to Singleton and then the Putty Rd to Richmond and on to Penrith, up over the Blue Mountains to Bathurst. To Cowra, Boorowa and Canberra.

From Canberra down to Lakes Entrance via Cann River is a good run. Several good potions from there to Melbourne.

The Great Ocean Road early in the morning stopping at Cape Ottway, and the Apostles is great. Drop in on Kev Murphy at Portland.

Get some good advice from Kev and head home.

Thanks Gents
Your suggestions have been particularly helpful and I WAS going to put a bit of effort into developing a route this weekend except I've just discovered Wirrabara is holding its inaugural Musicfest this weekend and they have camping so I might have to rearrange my priorities :13Candy and do my route homework next week.
Regards ... Mark
