Lamina lip trial report
« on: July 29, 2017, 05:57:12 PM »
Today in Victoria the winter decided to take a holiday and we had an unusually mild sunny day...though windy. This gave me a chance to try out the borrowed Lamina lip screen (thanks Michael).
Sue and I headed up to Mirboo Nth (which, by the way, has a terrific biker's cafe called "In-line"....closed in winter but opens again in August)
We did a round trip of around 130ks....not a huge ride but a good trial.
Here are some conclusion so far:
* The Lamina lip works!...we found instant results over the stock screen
* Buffeting was reduced dramatically
* I could easily hear the engine purring along, the only real noise was coming from the strong winds.
* I tested the above statements by ducking down under the screen and there was little difference in noise. I could also ride with my visor open which was terrific...as it was still possible to get a small amount of air into my face which in summer will be a blessing.

So pretty happy of course...Sue also found it worked really well for her as a pillion.  :clap
I should add that I have a basic flip face helmet which, whilst convenient, is a noisy helmet. Sue uses a normal full face helmet that also has a chin-skirt....which was my original helmet and much nicer ...think I will steal it back!

Drawbacks? Maybe looking down though two "bits" of screen  but I didn't find it distracting at all....also...I didn't want to remove the lip from the screen as I was worried about the velcro dots coming off the main screen as it is only on loan at the moment...so it's hard to clean behind the lamina lip. The 3m velcro sticks like ....well you know....!

I've wanted a laminar lip for my ST1100 for a while and after  your report I think I'll order one, great to hear someone else's feelings and results for using one. Thanx Ace.  :thumbs  :clap

I recently installed a Laminar Lip on my ST1300A and would concur with every observation that Chris has made regarding the trial he carried out today.

Well worth it IMHO.

is your ST1300 a non electric screen model? Lindsay.  The first thing I love about my new2me 2008 ST1300A is that I can raise the screen 1 cm and it changes the noise level and buffeting . Something my 1100 couldn't do.

Electric screens are awesome.

That's a huge criticism I have on the Goldwing. I put 65000km in 2 years on my '12 model, before acquiring the ST1300A.

Atmospheric conditions change and the Lecky screen can be adjusted at will, to fit the conditions. Those who have not experienced one, don't know what they are missing out on.

hmmm...just to add to the "confusion"/discussion....today I tried out my old full face helmet...(now worn by my wife) and it was fairly noisy..actually worse than the flip face one as described in my first post!
I know helmet makes/styles have a lot to do with noise/wind/buffeting but I was surprised as I expected that, after the trial on Saturday, this helmet would have been almost noise free.
I have a couple of other helmets to try as well....very interesting!
