Final Drive Wear/Replacement
« on: September 22, 2017, 09:31:12 AM »
I have noted some wear in my final drive spline, with around 1/4 to 1/3 of the spline worn away, causing a significant amount of backlash in the drive.   The cause of the wear is unknown, but perhaps the 170,000km on the dial is a contributor.  It's always been greased with the correct molly paste.

Well, the time has arrived to fix the problem.  :fp  A new rear drive unit and wheel flange from Honda comes to around $3,200  :eek   None of the US discount parts dealers have it in stock and have no idea when they may be able to get them, so my search continued.   I tracked down a second hand final drive from Trevor at "Lets Get Wrecked" in Tassie, for $420 delivered, and it's come from a 2010 stat write off ST1300 with front end damage and just 20,000 on the dial.   This final drive is now in my shed and I can't see any wear.   I've also got my hands on a rear wheel drive flange kit via Honda at a discounted price.   :runyay

Parts have therefore cost me under $900 instead of $3,200, and the job will be done over the next couple of weeks, which will get me back on the road with confidence.

Wow- you're a pioneer in this one!  Will you be doing a pictorial "How to"?
As all our bikes age, this will increasingly become an issue.  The rear drive works very hard on our bikes, and outlasts the chains and sprockets that lesser bikes regard as normal wear-and-tear throw-away items.  We might have to start an "organ donor bank of rear drives.

When I did the oil change this week I changed the drive oil.  The new oil is almost clear.  The oil oil was almost black.  Since there's no carbon from combustion in there, the colour change has to be microscopic metal fragments.  Do change your rear drive oil as specified, folks, because that dark oil can't be as healthy for the gears as new oil.

I'm afraid I won't be doing a "How To"  as my trusted dealer will be doing the job for me.

Tell him you want to photograph every step.  That should go down well.     :whistle

My ST's at Moto Adelaide today getting the final drive transplant.  I've asked them to keep the old bits for me, and I'll post some photos showing the wear and backlash.   Good cheap second hand units may become scarce or difficult to source in the not too distant future.

Being as how I am a model engineer, I have a fairly well equipped workshop including a metal lathe and a milling machine > It may be possible to produce at least the outer spline section I will have a think the inside spline presents a bit more of a challenge without a shaper.

If makng these parts becomes common or second hand ones rarer than hens teeth I may have a contact for making them.

For info, the part of interest is the Final Gear Set, shown in the diagram as number 6.   The female spline is what has worn on mine.

The final gear set is also the costly part with the 1100, matched splines and cost is around $700 from memory, overseas distributors all have to get from Honda

I still have my old 1100's drive unit. It is repairable by replacing the gear set and a few other items but is the cost worth it.

About $US278 - all the individual parts are available except a completed unit.

Hmmm That is a little more complicated than I thought it would be> The spiral cut drive gear and corresponding teeth on the outer\drive spline take it out of the capabilities of my workshop :'(

Here's my breakdown of the replacement of my final drive and rear wheel flange.   My 2008 ST1300 now has 170,000km on the dial and some wear has developed in the final drive splines, to the point that it was wise to replace both the final drive unit and the rear wheel flange that fits into the spline on the final drive.   I have measured the backlash in the worn splines at 11mm at the tyre.

A new Final Drive Unit and Rear Wheel Flange were going to cost me $3,200 from Honda, and I was unable to source a complete unit from the US from either Ron Ayres or Partzilla as neither had the part in stock and had no idea when they would get them from Honda.  New rules for purchasing from overseas mean that purchases over $1,000 incur GST and some hefty customs fees, making purchases over $1,000 challenging and in this case, hardly worth the effort even if they had the parts.

I found a good second hand Final Drive Unit in Tassie with Trev at “Lets Get Wrecked” from a 2010 ST1300 with just 20,000km on the clock, so it was essentially new, and cost me just $430 to my door.  Trev no longer had the rear Wheel Flange from that bike.    Moto Adelaide who do my repairs are a trusted dealer and also gave me a good price on the new Rear Wheel Flange Kit.

Here's my final cost breakdown....
Second Hand Final Drive       $430
New Rear Wheel Flange Kit   $425
Fitting and Testing Charges   $187

The attached photos show the old units that were replaced, plus the location of the worn spline on the final drive.   Most owners would be familiar with these parts.    The wear can be seen in the photos of the Final Drive Spline and on the Rear Wheel Flange Spline.  The Final Drive Spline was worn much more than the other.

This episode has cost me around $1,000 to sort out, so I reckon I have come out of that OK.

Never forget to grease your splines with the correct moly paste whenever the rear wheel comes off, to ensure maximum life of these parts.

That's very close to a roadside breakdown, and a trailer home.   :eek

Some time ago I managed to get a tube of the genuine Honda Moly 60 product.

See this product, which says it's a replacement for Moly60.    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HONDA-ASSEMBLY-MOLY-PASTE-M77-M-77-REPLACES-MOLY-60-08798-9010-GENUINE-OEM-/141725968894?epid=1811133690&hash=item20ff86a9fe:g:RJUAAOSwyQtVsTQu
