Rough idle and missing up to 3000 revs
« on: September 25, 2017, 08:38:37 PM »
So here is my first question: The bike was bought from a fellow who had been left it by his Father, However he is not interested in bikes and isn't even a rider so the bike has been sitting for some time unused. I had to put a new battery in it today as it went flat overnight every night.
It has a very rough idle and will in fact stall if the throttle is not cracked open a little even when warm. It has a bit of an intermittent miss up to about 3000 revs but seems to smooth out after that. I read here that fuel conditioner is sometimes helpful with this but after about 200ks with cleaner in the tank today it is no better. I have bought new plugs and will put them in and see if that makes a difference.
Any other suggestions? :bl11

Spark plugs sounds like the issue to me but you could also check the Fuel Filter while the plastic is off.

Thanks Dave, Do these bikes have trouble with the electronic ignition modules? The old CX used to go through them quite regularly.

I've had two CXs and no issue with the ignition system The first CX was the TC or Turbo model and the generator was an issue.

It wasn't charging when I took it out of shop so the dealer repaired it at no cost. 9 months later it failed so I took it to another dealer and repaired again and after another year I sold it.

I've had my 1100A since May 2006 and no major issues except the final drive. Splines had never been or rarely lubricated at tyre change times; dealer mechanics should know better.

Call me cynical, but the final drive repairs worth quite a bit to workshop income.  Just saying.  :think1

The rough firing could be a carby problem, old fuel can leave  a gummy residue. A good dose of carb cleaner, fuel trearment and a long run at idle may start to loosen up things.

You may need to strip the carbs and give them a manual clean out.

Exact same problem that I had when I purchased my ex-police ST1100. The bike had been sitting in the guys front yard outside in the weather for 2yrs. It was in shocking state, windscreen baked opaque by the sun, body plastic broken or missing, never been turned over in those 2yrs. Bought it off him for $300. Stripped the bike down to frame and motor. Refurbished all other parts. Spent about $2000 on parts and many hours of labour. Changed all the fluids and oils on the bike and when it came to running the motor, it ran with a miss in the motor, was only running on 2 cylinders. Had to finally strip down all the carburettors and clean all the jets and bowls. Carefully cleaned it all by hand with solvent and nozzle cleaning wire, careful not to damage the jet orifices. Did find a lot of petrol gum in all the nooks and crannies.

When I put the carbie bank together and back on the engine, I still had a rough idle and lacking power. After using 3 tanks of petrol with carbie jet cleaner without much success, pulled the carbies off again and found the rubber sleeves between the carbies and engine block were not sealing due to being hardened. Did not realise how hard they had got until I purchased a new set which were very flexible. Fitted the new sleeves and, presto, good idle, plenty of power and all cylinders firing.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Hobs

I've had a car ages ago that had a rough idle and it was a split in the rubber seal under the carby. Letting fresh air in and reducing the flow through the carby.

Given that this is a police model would it have been white originally?

If its a police model, it would have been white. On a bar under the seat should be a sticker with the paint code

Glad it was something simple Les. Going out today to buy plugs. What were the spark plugs you purchased?

Cheers,

The iridium ones are better - you can buy local but I bought from the UK in May 2014. https://driven2automotive.com/ignition-system/569-ngk-spark-plugs-1x-ngk-cr8ehix-9-iridium-ix-spark-plug-3797.html
