Perth to Canberra trip 2 March 2018
« on: January 14, 2018, 12:02:26 PM »
In the final planning stages of a trip from perth to Canberra. Any suggestions on training and preparation for an IBA 1600km ride during my trip. Recently completed a couple of 1000km rides.

Good luck, safe travels and stay upright .........

http://emeryclan.com.au

From your blog, I see you will be travelling from Adelaide to West Gippsland.  Unless you give Melbourne a wide berth, you will most likely be travelling through or around the suburbs.  That being the case, you'll likely be within a few km of at least a few Forum regulars.  Let us know if you need break from the ST and something more comfortable than a swag for a night.

And then West and Central Gippsland.  That may take you near the RTE venue at Glengarry.  http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=12419.0

The dates won't align, but I thought you might like to know.

The next RTE is at Dunolly.  http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=12457.0 - again the dates probably won't align, but if they do .......

Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

If you haven't already, look at investing in a Spot ( or Bubbler App for android, or the Apple equivalent) and setting up a Spotwalla account. Then put up the link here (and on Facebook) so we can keep an eye on your progress for safety.

The added bonus is (I think) you can submit spotwalla data as evidence with your trip.

Carry plenty of water and hydrolytes and alternate between one and the other.

Take it easy with hydrating aditives, I have seen a pushbike rider on that stuff that had to pullup due to severe stomach cramps. It took several hours drinking plain water before he recovered..

There's some very good tips and ideas here.....   http://ironbutt.com/aow.cfm

You also might think about a cooling vest if the weather is very hot.   I have one of these and it's great for keeping you cool in the very hot weather, and if it's cold, it can be worn as a vest to keep you warm.   http://www.coolweave.com.au/MCV.htm

I note your intention for a 1600 km ride. I would suggest Norseman to Port Augusta with a distance of 1669kms; essentially a straight line.

Advise caution if you plan to do much night riding between Norseman and Ceduna other than it's an easy ride over. Some of the roadhouses run 24/7 to cater for the trucks with most running overnight to avoid the terrorists (tourists).

If you are intending to have your ride certified, I would suggest you follow to the letter, these guidelines.

http://www.ironbutt.com/themerides/ssseries/

Remember, if you didn't get it certified, you can't claim to have completed a SS1600.

It looks like you will be moving through different time zones. Don't let them mess with your head. Be careful and work out a stage by stage (fill to fill) route and include the zone changes so that you can be certain of your correct time. This also needs to be documented if you are getting certified.

No, just wet it and it cools by evaporation, lasting at least an hour and a half before needing a re-soak.

Problem with this Alan is that there will be probably 5 to 6 hours in the dark in bad wildlife country.

The Mandurah/Ecula option by leaving at midnight the early (dark hours) would be in far less wildlife prone areas.
