extra wheels?
« on: March 03, 2018, 05:22:54 PM »
Bit long here but there is a few points to make.
On various forums remarks have been made about those of us who are getting on a bit, about our ability to  keep upright. If I fall over in the mud on my drive I do have trouble getting up right. I simply do not have the strength to get upright easily. That does not mean I no longer have to ability to ride safely in traffic. The main thing for myself is that the magic is still there as what it was 40 years ago.

I have met some people when confronted with this problem have gone the Peugeot 3 wheeler route and are very happy with their choice. Mind you it took some talking to get them to open up. Scared of ridicule? perhaps, but when I showed real interest, the conversation went well.

I would like to keep my ST and add some sort of safety feature to avoid the low speed thing happening. There would seem to be three options.

1 a leaning reverse tike where the front end is modified to take a new system with 2 wheels which allows one to lean as usual.
A good example here from Indonesia. It has a manual lock system.

2 A system known as leg down or leg down.

And another version which is rather complicated, but solves the problem of getting the legs down in off camber situations.

3 This system keeps the extra wheels down all the time. They are linked hydraulicaly with a stop valve to lock the cylinders. It would be activated manually as need be and released just as easily.

The 3 option might be the cheapest and easiest. With no time between off and on, as compared to no. 2 .  And might be less trouble with the RTA.
Might look a little weird, to say the least.
Comments please.
Or should I be shot at dawn.

Here's a 4th option. Little modification needed. Essentially adding two wheels at the rear and maintaining drive through the original rear wheel - 1 wheel up front and three at the back
