Broken Mirror cowel
« on: March 29, 2018, 06:13:36 PM »
Ok did a stupid thing and let it fall over after parking. Right over not just onto the crash bar and so the mirror copped it as well as some scratches on the pannier :cuss :cuss :||||. anyway  got a new glass fitted by the local glass and window people so I can now see where I have been again. The mirror cowl is in my opinion repairable and in fact has been repaired before. So do any of you very knowledgeable chaps know what kind of plastic it is? So I can get an appropriate glue for the job. :bl11

Thanks Johnny. I can go that route I guess. I was going to try gluing first but If I can't identify the plastic it will be hit and miss as to weather it works. :o

If using a soldering iron to repair it is important to use the same type of plastic to fill with. If the plastics are not compatible they will not melt together and will be obvious incompatibility. I think the plastic on the bike is ABS plastic. It is used on many cars as mouldings. I went to a car wreckers repair yard and asked for a plastic section off one of the damaged cars. He gave me a piece for free after explaining to him why I wanted it.

I used a plastic moulding from a Hyundai I was wrecking and melted the plastics together and mixed them well about 2ml each side. It made a good bond. I dropped STranger a few more times  :fp and re-welded the cover 2 or 3 more times, sometimes new cracks, sometimes repeating broken old cracks. eventually I had to get a new cowling because the old one was like a jigsaw puzzle.
STrangers cowl always had 100mph tape on him.

Our own JohnG, who lives in Port Elliot SA. does plastic welding.    You may be able to post it over to him to get it repaired.

Thanks Pete. It appears that the plastic is ABS. so MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) will glue it or it certainly appears to have done at any rate.
